This album was the first CD my wife burned for me after it came out, before we were dating, when we were 17 and she introduced me to these magnificent magisters of music. It's one I've gone back to and listened to time and time again. I lost my wife 3 weeks ago. This album is my memorial of her, and I can't think of one more fitting.
My twin sons were raised on The Crane Wife. When listening to this video of The Island it triggered memories of them sitting in the back seat of the car playing “air organ” (if you can believe it), heads thrashing.
Just this afternoon I played several Decembrists songs on mix while driving w my 20 month old son. Something about Colin’s voice grips him, too, bc he immediately starts singing along in toddler gibberish and he doesn’t do that with other music.
It's amazing how many wonderful/bittersweet memories can be triggered by hearing old songs you used to listen to over and over with someone you cared about. I miss you Kimberly and I'm sorry for everything that went wrong
I love this song. Disappointed in this video, however, as it fails to show much of Jenny on all of the climaxing organ parts, my favorite and IMO what makes the song so awesome. Of course they are all fantastic, but she deserves more screen time.
This Is probably my favorite song at all time. Maybe that isn't fair because it's basically three songs in one. Mix is kinda funky (and not funk-ey enough) on this version. Also should've given that 12 string a mic, I think. Keep rockin' you mad, nerdy, talented people. Colin, I have one of your guitar picks. Not giving it back.
One of the most cerebral bands I've ever heard. Their lyrics are genius. Add to that Colin's voice and the harmonies and this is my all time favorite band.
I've got such vivid memories from fifteen years ago, of cycling home from work and listening to this album. No mp3 player so I'd use a portable CD player carried in my backpack. No Bluetooth headphones either so I had to use wired earphones, unfortunately the wire wasn't long enough and I couldn't turn my head to the left without ripping the cord out, to avoid that I'd cycle the whole way without looking left! 🤪
I know most fans favorite albums are Picaresque or the King is Dead, but The Crane Wife will always be my favorite Decemberists album. It was also my first, so....probably nostalgia. But this song slaps, as does the whole album.
I know, I know, the band is amazing. Their songwriting is sublime. Colin Meloy has a way with story and melody that constantly delights. Still, I wrote a song WITH THE BAND IN MIND and they will never play it unless someone from the band reads this and listens and loves it and tells them about it! So I will post it here, for lack of other means. www.lyricist.net/catatonia. Decemberists,, please play this song!

You would think that someone with 20+ years of experience and all the money in the world would know how to make their acoustic guitar sound better than this
Would have been better in person. Thought biden was gonna "handle the coronavirus like a grown up?" But whatever. You gotta live in Portland. Not me. We just can't call Trump a "white supremecist" between songs. Its cool decemberists. But I'm kinda blaming Portland and the people in Portland for perpetuating lies who lied. And that means you @Colin Meloy But im only holding you to your words. I won't judge you for anything else. Just saying you owe me money through ticketmaster so you gotta take the scolding.

sorry for your loss
@@lamealchemist5320 I'm so sorry.💔❤
Their best song IMO. So Epic, so Dynamic. From a maritime tale to 70's prog rock glory with Jenny at the organ helm. Well done crew!
So good to see Jenny rocking and rolling!
definitely put a smile on my face!
Did something happen before?
All Hail The Decemberists! Here's to many more years of musical magnificence before the mast!!!

I just imagine you putting them to bed with Shankill Butchers playing lol

I'm guessing it's because Colin has an everyman kind of voice.

Can you please come back to SEATTLE and play THIS ALBUM I full length again PLEASE! I wasn’t able to make it last time.
Probably my all-time favourite medley.
Thank you, the old man with the ancient Alvarez greets you....oddly strumming away on your music, played in rural Michigan countryside
This was the second song I heard from them and I discovered the cd at one of my random music checkouts at the library.
Still gives me full body chills. Every time. ♥
Great little online concert
Cried real tears. Twenty goddamn years.
One of my favorite Decemberists songs. This song highlights almost everything of what makes them an incredible band.
This band is amazing. I'm speechless.
Awesome 🔥
Superb. Can't wait for the next gig.
Well this is a great unexpected video!
One of my favorite bands!
Thanks to all who helped bring this to fruition!
Can’t wait to see them live again. We were in Oakland the last time they came through and it was easily the best show I’ve ever seen live.
I loved this performance! So glad it's on youtube.

This is cool and everything but did they have to nix the ryman shows? They’re like 4 months away :(
This goes out to all the boyfriends that weigh less than their girlfriends
