I appreciated this conversational tutorial with practical suggestions about being creative and authentic, but also not being afraid to learn from other artists. I completely agree with the concept that being in a playful and open mind lets ideas and imagination flow. Maybe that’s why taking a shower generates new ideas or perspectives because it’s relaxing. “ Quick, write this down, my hands are wet” !

Great advice...My paintings are usually a journey of creation. I change direction as they progress and they aften turn out very differently to how I started out and the end result is - hopefully - much better than my original idea... and - as Joseph Campbell wrote - "Follow your bliss"

Great video Mark - very inspirational. I like the idea of doing a very large amount of AI images. So far I've only done eight or so of one idea. Will definitely try. Oh, and letting you know how much I love me easel! I got the smaller of the two and it's perfect for my space and so easy to use and adjust. That much easier to be creative! :)

I use AI extensively in my process. It was actually AI Art that drove me to want to learn how to paint. I was making all these amazing “painting style” images that were just UNBELIEVABLE. And I was like “I wish I could paint those kinds of scenes for real. It’s a shame that the images are locked in the computer and nobody will ever see them on the wall.”
So I got a fire lit under my ass to learn how to do it. To paint those kinds of things. And not have to worry about some nit-picker being like “Ah ah ah! Copyright copyright copyright! You can paint that photo you found on Flickr that you see on your screen…but just to learn. You can’t sell it to anyone. Because that picture was taken by someone else. They have the copyright.”
A pox on that. THAT idea... more than anything else...would grind my gears. And when I learned that no copyright can be given to raw AI imagines…it was such a relief. I now have the ability have any references image I want.
I think that there is going to be a giant influx of people like me wanting to learn to paint because of MidJourney. It’s gonna get people interested in painting like nothing ever has before. I love it. I have. Whole series lines up ready to go. I just have to find the time to paint them. One-by-one.

I'm sorry but using genAI is pretty unethical atm, you might as well get MUCH BETTER references from real photographers (support them at the same time) or just go take photos from nature, that way you are 100% involved in the creative process and everything is done by your own hand, as a result of your own decisions! I know everyone likes taking easy shortcuts but you either love the creative process or you don't. Either way, I think it's very important to keep your integrity as an artist. Apart from that, very good video!

The process he teaches will apply to acrylic just as much as to oil paints. Here are the main differences you need to think about:
      1) Acrylic Dries Faster - the main advantage of oil paint is it takes a long time to dry as compared to standard heavy body acrylic by Golden or Liquitex. You could mix up 50 colors in oil,lay them out on a palette like Mark does, and then be ready to start painting. If you do that with standard acrylics and a glass palette…the ones you mixed first would be dry before you mix the last color in the set.
      2) You can now overcome this - you can get a “wet palette” for acrylics which will allow the acrylic paint to remain wet indefinitely. Even heavy body paint. Furthermore Golden has a line of paint called “Open” which actually stays wet like oil for a few days. So you can paint like oil paint alla prima but with acrylic. Combo both the wet palette with the Open Paints and you have a winning acrylic combo.
      3) You need to clean acrylic brushes daily. Even with Golden Open. Otherwise the acrylic will dry in the bristles and ruin your brushes. Oil doesn’t have this problem. You can dip a brush in “brush dip” and lean it for 3 months if you have to go out west camping or something. So daily brush cleaning with water is essential for acrylic.
      4) Drying Time - heavy body acrylic paintings are normally 100% dry within 2 days. The “Open” paints dry within a week. Oil paints don’t typically get “touch dry” for a week and it’s usually best to let them sit for a month before applying a “breathable” varnish like Gamvar. They will continue drying for about a full year. Then you need to apply a full varnish to seal the painting and retard the “aging” process. So the drying “stuff” is more complex with oil paints.

Do you have any suggestions for what to paint for practice? It seems a waste of materials and supplies, which are expensive, and then what do you do with all the "practice" pieces?

I was just "chatting" with Meta AI. It used an exclamation point. I said u don't have emotions stop lying. It said it would not use emotional punctuations or words. It didn't last long.
Especially at the end of our "chat".. I said ty!
      It said you're welcome!
It's easy to trip it up on "human like" things. But it's scary accurate on esoteric topics. And it responds instantly!
P.s. it continued to use exclamation points. So I told it to recite the Gettysburg address and put an exclamation point between each letter of each word. Wow. It did. But stopped 3 paragraphs later and said, "it's a long address and I get ur point. U don't want me to use exclamation points, do u really want me to continue"? I said no.
      Crazy!😅

    • @BrianReplies
      @BrianReplies 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

Nuance matters. The AI doesn't "get" the images from anywhere. It relies upon a complex mathematical model which assigns color, line and form at various weights to different words. There are NO images within the model. Just like there are not images of anything you have seen in your own brain. If you are told to draw an apple...or to even THINK of an apple...where does the image of the apple that exists in your mind that you then paint....where does your brain "get" those images?
Your brain isn't getting the images from photographs saved within it of things you have seen in the past. That's not how the brain works. You see things and then your brain distills it down into some type of abstract "model" that it can use to draw upon to reconstruct new images from scratch. But they are not "collages" of actual things you have seen in the past.
Same goes for AI. There are no images in there. In the models. They are just math. Neither the model or the construction software that taps the model to create an image even know that they are making an image at all. It's just 1's and 0's to it. It's just laying down pixels of color randomly according to the algorithm.
We "see" the result as an image. But it doesn't "see" anything. It's just assinging math values to pixel locations and those math values cause certain colors to show up in that pixel location. Taken together we see it as an image.
So the answer to your question is that AI doesn't "get" the images from anywhere. It conjures up pixels randomly that we then PERCEIVE as images.

Read, The Master and His Emissary, by Dr Iain Mcgilchrist. He is a good friend of John Cleese. The book outlines a new brain hemisphere hypothesis and the importance of creativity. In short, we are humans, not machines. Process philosophy, Dr McGilchrist further expanded his argument in a Magnum Opus, The Matter with Things.

No. It’s amazing . And 100 years from now…when all the Pearl clutches have passed on…all the future artists will use it without thinking twice. The high brow people then who ree about it will be like photography purists today who screech that digital photography isn’t “real” photography because photography is a chemical process and digital cameras are not cameras at all they are computers.
Everyone will roll their eyes and ignore them. From then forward. To eternity.
So we have about 80 years max of having to listen to people say various versions of “AI sucks” and “I hate AI” and “AI is unethical” and then nobody will care. For billions of years into the future.

    Generation is NOT Creativity
I love your videos and I've loved how open you are that you use AI in your process in the past, but it's irresponsible for you to promote others use AI in their process, without balancing risks:
Morally, AI is theft scrubbed of ownership,
The use of AI can damage an artist's reputation,
You can't trust others to be open they've used it in their work,
AI is still early in it's legislation and if ever deemed to be a form of theft then products (paintings, say) of that process would be damaged,

    • @BrianReplies
      @BrianReplies 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

You are incorrect from the get-go. Transformative use is fair use. And nothing is more transformative than having a computer "look at" a billion images and then create a mathematical "model" based on those observations. The "model" is not an image. It contains no images. It isn't even physical. You can't see or hear or touch or smell it. It has NOTHING in common with the images.
The mathematical models that the various AI training softwares create are literally the most transformative than anything else we have ever done in history. It's the very definition of transformative use. And transformative use is fair use. If you are going to attack fair use...then you're going to have to be intellectually consistent and start saying that people can't make parody comics of copyighted characters and then sell those cartoons to publications like The Atlantic. After all.....wouldn't you have to say that the parody artist "stole" the Superman character he used in his comic? Wouldn't that be a form of theft?
But let me guess. "That's different" you'll say.
No. It's not different. They are both fair use. The only difference is that you "like" and "approve" of the creation of parody comic cartoons but you do NOT like or approve off the creation of AI math models. They are both examples of transformative use...but you prefer that one be treated with approval and the other banned. Which, of course, means that you want to abandon fair use principles in favor of your own preferences.
