I used to live in New Zealand and the people there found the different UK accents baffling as there is very little difference between the far north and far south of that country.
Agreed. He sounded like David 'Bumble' Lloyd from Accrington, nothing like the St Helens accent. Tbf the guy he interviewed hardly had a St Helens accent.
It does now, but older natives of the town have much broader lancs accents. There was a study a while ago about city accents growing outwards so that helps explain why St. Helens has now got a smidgin of scouse.
I hate it when people think they're good at accents you can't have a conversation with them without them doing an accent

McGowan got the St. Helens accent completely wrong. He impersonated an East Lancashire accent rather than a South Lancashire accent

The majority of the southwest of England speak with a Rhotic accent; especially Bristol and Plymouth.
