  • While visiting Wittenberg during their 2012 concert tour of Germany and Austria, members of the Augustana Choir gave this impromptu performance of "Children of the Heavenly Father," arranged by director, Jon Hurty. The Castle Church (Schloßkirche) is most famous as the site where Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door, beginning the Protestant Reformation.

This song is so special. My grandparents brought this over from Sweden in the late 1800's. It has been sung always at every one of my family's wedding, baptisms, confirmation, children's sermons and funerals. When first presented to the Swedish King he adopted it for use in Sweden. Prior to his edict this song was not used in Swedish Lutheran churches cuz it was too folksy. History has shown us how vital such music is. I have myself sung this song a great deal over the past decades. Many listeners have commented on how this was their favorite song that I have sung in churches. This fall I get to sing it in front of a group of semi-pro musicians and distinguished guests. That honor and privilege overwhelms me. I am doing it in both Swedish and English. I hope it brings the house down. Pray for me, please. Me How fitting for it to be sung by this choir in Luther's church. :-)

I love this hymn especially when I play it on the organ.

Wow just wow!! Luther would be so happy! He knew music is so important. I was a French teacher and not one of my fellow 50 French teachers in our travels in France could or would sing! I am glad i am a Lutheran!

Beautiful and so meaningful after the awful tragedy in CT yesterday. The Wittenberg Castle Church brought back memories of our visit there in 2002 (?). Dorcas/Mom
