I totally agree. This hobby should always be about buy what you like and buy what you can afford. If we all liked the same things it would be boring. It's great we have social media but sometimes it can ruin the hobby with all the hype stuff. I'm more impressed with a collector that has a variety of different brands and not a collector that follows the hype train.

Great video with some very sound advice. My rule of thumb for watch collecting is, if you're paying over retail you're buying the hype. I try to make if a point to wear everyone on my watches equally, spread the love. As usual your channel is the true collectors channel. No BS, no pumping and no selling...... Just keeping it real. Thanks T

True but that only applies to watches still in production. I did buy a discontinued 16570 Explorer II Polar way above its last known retail price but that's cos you just wouldn't be able to find one new at retail anymore. But for a current model ceramic Pepsi GMT, no way in hell I would pay 2x retail for that watch in the grey market although I'm aware I'm probably not gonna get one at retail from the AD.

Another great video Tony, and a very heartfelt, honest view into the hobby. Without social media there would be a whole lot less hype and interest around many of these hype watches. It’s a very important message, especially at these prices, not to get persuaded into any one direction especially considering how many of these influencers own or work for a watch/jewelry company. Great video and the quality from the new gear is looking great.

I started with a Rolex Date on an Oyster Bracelet years ago and ended up with a Seiko Lord Marvel on a Leather Strap from the 1970s which is my favorite watch today. So I really can say for me it´s not about the money, it´s about how a watch speaks to you and how comfortable it wears day in day out.

Glad to see you’re watching the Indy 500. That’s a religion here in Indiana “the racing capital of the world”…. I watch the race on TV but I usually go down for practice. Thank you Tony for the great perspective. I think it is a tight balance for the transition to go from entry level watches to luxury expensive. I myself think that I stayed with inexpensive watches for way too long and most of them are either lost or not working properly. I wish I would had bought expensive watches sooner that I could experience and that can endure the test of time to pass to the next generation. My advice to the youngest generation is to get some few watches that are easy to afford and if the passion stays for more than 5 years to transition to luxury as money permits rather than accumulating lots of inexpensive watches you don’t care for decades later.

Another awesome video, and one that convinced me to subscribe to a channel for the first time in my life. I find your videos and topics around watches really different, because it’s not hype or some kind of marketing angle like most of the other watch channels push. It’s just a dude talking about watches, imagine that, lol.
I 100% agree, and I’d even say this concept extends beyond watches and can be applied to a lot of life. Once you are able to let go of “buying the hype”, I think life becomes much more enjoyable and less stressful. Marketing nowadays is incredible thanks to the combination of social media, psychology, and ai/computers, and the people pushing an angle are always the ones who come out on top. If you’re buying the hype and getting what everyone else says you need, which is in turn what everyone else has, are you really buying something that special and unique? I see the same type of stuff pushed on channels around my other hobbies- “buy hype item X and you will be happy”…eventually you see through that and realize that’s not how it works. My favorite watch videos are “this is the ONLY watch you’ll ever need in your collection!!!!” Lol, that cracks me up. If you’re into the hobby, you’re going to seek stuff out, not be one and done.
With respect to watches, I guess I’m lucky in that I spend months researching things and really know what I want, and I can honestly say I don’t regret a single watch purchase, granted I’ve not been into the hobby super long and have about 6 watch purchases under my belt.
I kind of jumped in both feet first and bought a seamaster as my first watch; but I also knew I would love it and as of today, I’d still say that’s the one watch I’d keep if I could only have one.
I do want a submariner (not the date version) at some point, as well as a gmt master ii, but that’s because I think the sub is an iconic and classy diver, and I like some of the james bond, steve mcqueen, etc. connections to it. The gmt master ii, I like from an aesthetic standpoint, plus I don’t have a gmt in my collection, and I like the pan am tie in.
That’s really it for my Rolex “wants”. Everything else is Grand Seiko, Glashutte, and Cartier. In fact I think my watch this year may be a white dial medium santos; I looked at one a few weeks ago along with a large dial and have been sleeping on it and surprisingly, think I prefer the medium. I’m ready to embrace the scratch magnet lol.
I own a two tone fluted motif yellow gold DJ41 I picked up last year after waiting months , and like you said, a ton of people online say that’s an old man and starter watch. I love it though and it signifies the weekend for me, plus it’s discontinued now and I’ve never seen another fluted dial. Like you, a lot of the time I find myself wearing my Tudor or an Omega, I’m not really a flashy guy and when I do wear the DJ, it’s usually way dressed down and people either don’t notice or probably think it’s fake. Fine with me lol. Also yes, the notion that even a $1k watch is inferior, starter, etc. is crazy. It’s all a ton of money to be spent on a luxury no one “needs”, and to be at a point in your life where you can do so is a huge accomplishment and something to be extremely thankful for. I never thought I’d be here and yet here I am, and every day I’m just so happy and thankful for being able to enjoy this hobby and be happy with my choices and timepieces, and meet some interesting people along the way.
In a world filled with noise, information overload, and a push for excess, it’s nice to have an old-school hobby and be able to take a deep breath and talk to people normally about watches without the hype.
I once heard the quote, and I think it’s great and fits the video “the watch doesn’t make the man, the man makes the watch”.
Have a nice rest of your weekend!

Amen, brother Tony! This is the best watch advice ever given on TH-cam. I agree 100% with everything you said. Love the Wimbledon. My 2 most worn watches are my 36mm Explorer and my 36mm green dial OP. They are both extremely comfortable to wear all day, very durable and robust, classy and sporty and both consistently run +/- 0 sec/day. They both bring me great joy when on my wrist. Hey Tony, great, honest video. You are nobody's tool! I look forward to your videos and perspective. I may not always see exactly eye to eye and I appreciate it. I have appreciated watches since inheriting my grandfather's pocket watch in the early 70's. You are so right about getting the watch that you like. I am at a point in life now that I have a nice collection, but I enjoyed every watch along the way. Even though I have some hype watches my most worn, day to day is my Tudor Marine National FXD. It flies under the radar and you can forget it's on the wrist as it weighs nothing. Whenever I am in a comfortable environment I always make a point to say "nice watch" to someone I see wearing most anything other than a smart watch. Cheers.

I can add this to the Q&A. But, if you’re picking it up tomorrow then I would maybe suggest that if it’s stressing you out that much maybe hold off. No watch is worth stressing over. You won’t enjoy it and all you will think about is the money. Or you can buy it knowing that if later on you want to sell it you won’t lose an arm and a leg on it. They still hold value. You probably won’t get all of your money back, but you won’t lose everything.

Sometimes they are niche things (that are hard to get), sometimes they are 'following fashion' things (that are easy to get).

I don't buy luxury watches. Your videos give me ideas and shape my opinion on what to buy later. Buying luxury hype watches is way above my pay grade. Who is buying those solid gold Rolex watches now anyways? They wont even let me in the boutique.

Tony it seems to me that most Rolex watch models are hype model these days. Because customers cannot get the model they want because they don’t have the spend history. Or the wait list is too long. So they end up buying a different Rolex model like the Air King, or a date just model which they still have to wait for. By the way Tony since watching your channel over time, I started calling every one Dude🤣. Now it’s a bit odd for an English men calling yea dude hay dude. I don’t even surf dude 👆👍. Thank Tony Dude.

I wear a Daniel Mink chronograph when I’m working it’s around 20years old has scratches don’t care if it gets more. When I’m not a normally wear my 111660 deepsea or I have a deepblue 10year anniversary 1000m chronograph I wear it quite a bit Occasionally I’ll wear my 116600 sea dweller. I need to get a datejust or something along that lines just because everything I have is a diver or a chronograph.

It's important to spend less time chasing material things and focus on forming experiences instead.
Material things have novelty and temporary fulfillment, experiences are moments you'll remember forever. Get whatever watch you want, then spend the rest of your money traveling, spending time with friends/ family, doing things you love.

    hey tony,
you are right about so much. i also started relatively high, but not because i wanted a rolex directly, because i simply realized that the tag heuer Aquaracer was a purchase, because of the money, actually i wanted the sub and was not patient to save any more. I now also own Rolex watches and I would like the 36m Explorer 1. everyone says it's too small, better get a sub.
You should buy what you like.

Great advice Tony! The demand for any luxury products increased during and after COVID and it's sad cuz the shopping experience is so much different now than before. A lot feels FOMO and bought watches just because and I do feel for those people that are really watch enthusiasts cuz a lot of them until now have been waiting for their time to acquire one from their AD.

I just got a New Rolex Explorer II black dial (which I think blows the white dial out of the water) It was my #1 pick and I passed up a Sub 2 Tone Bluesy which I got a call for 3 weeks prior. Few quick points on my a Rolex Experience:
    1) go see them in person. I think some of the hype watches look so meh when you see them in the AD.
2). The hype watches of today might not be the hype watches of 2027. I think the Covid bug is fading and the demand for the Daytona and GMT Masters are backing off. Especially the precious metal. Tough economic times and zero flipper margin = a massive drop in demand.
3). Be patient. You’ll be able to buy two tones, and non hype Rolex with a small wait period. The grey market is getting desperate for clout and it’s starting to show.
Love your watch takes and in the grand scheme of things … buy what you like. And stay the hell away from pre certified over priced Rolex’s. If an AD is trying to push over priced pre certified, find another AD.
    Thanks Tony
