Air Conditioner Not Cooling Enough [2 Simple Checks to Do Yourself]

  • In this video we give you two simple things to check if your home's air conditioner is not cooling enough. If your air conditioner is cooling, but not cooling very well or enough, you want to check two simple things before calling anyone to fix your air conditioner.
The first thing to check is your furnace air filter. A dirty air filter can restrict air flow and cause your air conditioner to not cool well. The second thing to check is the outdoor coil to make sure it is not dirty with dust, or dirt and debris from nearby trees and bushes. If the outdoor coil is clogged with dirt and debris, this can cause the air conditioner to not cool enough.
If you find that your outdoor condensing coil is clogged, you could try to clean yourself. It should be cleaned from the inside out. However we always recommend calling a professional if you are not trained to work on air conditioners. It is possible to wash out an air conditioner in a way that can damage some of the components. The furnace air filter is very easy to change yourself. A clogged filter often cause air conditioners to not cool enough especially in very hot seasons.

Cleaned the outside of the unit. Checked the return filter inside. I cant find the supply filter, I don't even know if I need to change another filter besides the return filter. This is an old brick house. Ac/furnace vents on the ground. Maybe it's the capacitor or compressor? Fan turns on from the ac control. Just blows very minimal cold air from the inside floor vents

Thank you for the information. Is there a separate filter on the AC unit? I replace my indoor filter frequently. I recently bought a spray can cleaner from Rheem at Home Depot. I usually buy most products from Lowe's but I did not see the Condenser cleaner. I noticed a big difference from just spraying water on the condenser coils. Even with the temperature in the San Joaquin Valley in California at the South end of the valley, where the temperatures having been running 110 F the inside of my mobile home has only gotten to 81 F. rather than 85 or 86 F. from before the cleaning. The Rheem AC unit is doing a better job of working and it is close to 15 years old already. So, your information does work.

On the fins of the ac unit they have been pushed in accidently prior to me buying this house. The fins ,that are almost as fragile as aluminum foil, have gently been bent to the side occluding the gaps that allow the air to circulate by the fins to carry the heat out . There are several of these areas all around the AC . Is there a tool especially made that I can insert and straighten them. I imagine it would be designed much like a comb and hopefully most can be an easy enough job to straighten the fins back to near the original spacing.

My central ac unit (The part of the unit thats outside doing the cooling) has two factory inlet holes for the 2 heat exchange fluid hoses to go in and come out. Those holes are open and without any cover to prevent outside air blowing in. Is it ok for me to block those holes so air, mice and the like can go into the interior? I would think it may be enough air that the cooling could be compromised from the hot air , not to mention the sand that gets blown in when its windy. Im in the Southern calif desert and theres lots of heat wind and sand.Ill start covering it when it takes time off for the winter. No telling how much sand has blown in between the fins

About an hour later, my unit was blowing icicles. My house got so cold that I had to turn the thermostat to back off a little. It’s hitting mid to high nineties in Texas and it’s rough without AC! Great Video. I have a question.
I live in a 1500sqft condo in NJ. I have central air. Rheem HVAC. It gets hot in summers. Especially, I have cathedral ceilings and sun-roof (skylight) in the living room. I set-up the thermostat at 70. And outside is 80. After running for almost 4-5hrs temp does not change. The living room is cool but the bedrooms does not get enough cooling.
    What could be potential reason
    - Air Filter (checked it is clean)
    - Capacitor
    - Dirty Condenser coil
    - Refrigerant.
Just wanted to know before I call a technician. To see if I can DIY. Especially Air Filter, Capacitor, Condenser coil. Last time, I called for maintenance it set me back $700.

I have a question for you so the house seems cool and it just hit 90 today now the indoor thermostat is reading 78 but like i said it feels cool or comfortable. now when I did what you said and checked outside compressor the fan was blowing cool air instead of hot greenery is cut back and I can remember hot or pretty warm air blowing out last week or so. Now i didn't check the very large filter yet to see if it was dirty because the tech guy said only change once a year. Question could the restricted or dirty filter cause the air from the compressor to blow out cool air??

Our ac seems to not go below 73. Even before this heat wave, it wouldn't go below even though I have it set to 68. Also seems to be hitting 78 as the sun goes down, I'm guessing from the humidity. I just changed the filter and its still acting this way. Anything else I could try?

Dear, thanks for this channel, I have such a problem - it was hot in the morning - 27 degrees Celsius and the air conditioner, when turned on, cooled the air up to 20 degrees Celsius at the outlet of the air duct, and in the evening I measured the temperature of the tubes at the inlet of the air conditioner and one pipe of 24 degrees Celsius inlet and outlet pipe 9 degrees Celsius and froze over, and at the same time it was 22 degrees Celsius at the duct inlet and 24 degrees Celsius warm outside. In other words, the air conditioner does not cool as efficiently after 12 hours of operation - what's the problem here?

My AC kicks in cold air when it first starts but once I set the temperature to 74, it will cool down the air from 77 (for example) to 74, then I can hear the AC turning off or going idle, but the air continues to be on. And after few minutes the air turns from cold to cool, then warm, then hot. Next thing I know, the temperature is up to 80. Like the AC never kicked in after turning itself off at 74.

To whoever is reading this Jesus loves you and he’s coming soon. All you need to do to be saved is believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins was buried and came back to life on the 3d day confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and you’ll be saved. Today is the day of salvation tomorrow is not promised and you don’t want to miss the rapture it will be so bad like nothing ever seen before on earth. God bless!

he did not answer allthe question properly
it could be gas or compressor problem sir..calling" people to repair unless it is direct from the factory where you purchase the unit, will not solve the problem, you may as well discard the unit!

There are a million videos on how to fix your air conditioner….how about not checking your air filter just put a brand spanking new filter….I did that….how about not bothering to check your capacitor put a new one instead….I did that….how about washing the outside unit with a hose….I did that ….how about cleaning the tubing that Carries the condensed water from the inside unit…I did that…how about making sure the compresor works ….I did that….how about making sure the blower that is on top of the compressor is working….I did that…i did all these things and more….and everything seems to be working and yet I don’t get cold air…the only thing I don’t know how to check is inside the area where the plenum is….so now the only thing I can do is call a technician…my only problem is I don’t want the tech guy telling me that I need a capacitor or that I need a filter….I did all that already…
