Thomas David Morrison (January 2, 1969 - September 1, 2013) was an American professional boxer who competed from 1988 to 2008, and held the WBO heavyweight title in 1993. He retired from boxing in 1996 when he tested positive for HIV. Morrison is also known for his acting career, having starred alongside Sylvester Stallone in the 1990 film Rocky V as Tommy Gunn.
Born on January 2, 1969 in Jay, Oklahoma, Tommy Morrison is a former boxer who was once world Heavyweight champion. Morrison has had a troubled life outside the ropes of the boxing ring. His nickname is The Duke, and he is the grandnephew of Hollywood legend John Wayne.
Morrison started boxing professionally November 10, 1988, with a first round knockout of William Muhammad in New York City. Twenty days later, he scored another first round knockout win.
In 1989, Morrison had 19 wins, 15 by knockout. Among the fighters beaten were former Mike Tyson opponents Lorenzo Boyd, Dave Jaco and Lorenzo Canady, as well as former George Foreman opponents Steve Zouski and Ken Lakusta.
His biggest breakthrough, however, came in 1990, and it wasn’t directly related to his boxing career: During one of his 1989 fights, Sylvester Stallone was a spectator, and he was looking for an actor to oppose him in Rocky V. After seeing Morrison, he arranged for Morrison to have a script reading, and Morrison went to Los Angeles, where he was cast as Tommy Gunn in the movie. While Morrison did win two fights in 1990, it was when Rocky V was released in December of that year that he gained mainstream popularity.
Morrison had six wins in 1992, including one over former Riddick Bowe opponent Art Tucker, and one over future world title challenger Joe Hipp, who later became the first Indian to challenge for the world’s Heavyweight title. After having two wins in 1993, including one over two time former world title challenger Carl Williams, Morrison found himself fighting for the world championship again, this time against George Foreman, On June 7, of that year. Morrison upset many critics by outpointing Foreman over 12 rounds, winning the world title.
Tommy “The Duke” Morrison won three fights in 1995 before meeting Razor Ruddock on Pay Per View for the IBC Heavyweight Championship. This fight was named fight of the year by various magazines, as Morrison dropped Ruddock several times, but had to climb off the canvas in round one himself before scoring a sixth round knockout win.
The fight with Lennox Lewis, who had also lost his world championship, finally came off after the fight against Ruddock. Lewis stopped Morrison in six rounds.
A few days before his next fight, to be shown on Showtime, Morrison had an HIV test done by the Nevada state athletic commission, which keeps strict guard of their competitors’ health. It was revealed during Showtime’s telecast of the boxing undercard, that Morrison was on a flight back to Oklahoma City, place that he had made his home for most of his life, after tests revealed he was HIV-positive, automatically retiring him from boxing as a competitor.
Later in 1996, Morrison announced that he wished to make a comeback with one more bout, the proceeds of which would go to benefit his newly created KnockOut Aids Foundation. Morrison won what would turn out to be his final fight, a first round knockout of Marcus Rhodes on Pay Per View in Tokyo. Morrison finished his boxing career with a record of 46 wins, 3 losses, 1 draw, with 40 of his wins by knockout.
Morrison spent 14 months in prison after retiring on drug and weapons charges. On September 9, 2003, Tommy and his wife Dawn were blessed with a baby boy, Tristin Duke Morrison.
Morrison revealed to Sports Illustrated that he once contacted Sly Stallone about working in the possible production of Rocky VI (Rocky Balboa), and he said that he wanted to pursue a career in acting. He also wrote portions of an autobiography, but did not find a publisher.
Tommy passed away on September 1, 2013 at the young age of just 44. The causes of death were stated as being cardiac arrest, septicemia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and multiorgan failure.
Tommy Morrison is interred at Butler Creek Cemetery in Sulphur Springs Arkansas.

You can tell how much his traumatic childhood affected him by how tumultuous his adult life was and the fact that he died at just 44. And then there’s his brother who was in prison, as well as his sister who died so young. Such a tragic story.

I remember when Rocky V was being filmed in my hometown of Philadelphia back in January of 1990 and shook hands with Tommy Morrison and Sylvester Stallone when they were shooting scenes at the art museum. The fact that you also covered Sage Stallone;s final resting place is ironic, since I watched him film a lot of scenes in my neighborhood. both gone at a relatively young age and both lived totally different lives. RIP to Tommy and Sage

Thank you Scott for doing this video on Tommy Morrison. I met Tommy several times. When the Rockey V movie came out he would come by the movie theatre I worked at and stand by the movie poster admiring it. I thought that was so cool! He also let people take pictures and sign autographs. He was nice to his fans. A few times he was there I would let him and the girls (which were many) he was with sneak out of the theatre to avoid a few fans who wouldn't leave him alone. Sadly not long after that, he was getting into trouble. I would hear about him getting arrested for fighting in restaurants & Bars in Overland Park, Ks & in the Westport area in Missouri which is filled with numerous bars and clubs. I had a hard time believing he would act this way because when I was around him he was super nice, humble, and kind. So you g and so troubled. May he RIP ❤

@@SCOTTONTAPE Hello there Scott 😉 Just wanted to say thanks a million for posting/sharing your journey taken with Tommy Morrison and family. Like many a people out there, I was mostly aware of him through his having appeared in Rocky 5, and actually until viewing this vlog, had never given much thought to his passing. You brought many things to light about Mr. Morrison that I didn't previously know about. Some of those details are quite difficult to reconcile, and disturbing at times, but I still truly, deeply, sincerely hope and pray that Tommy's soul, spirit is resting in peace. Scott, I wish for you nothing less than the very very best of things in all things my friend, and so appreciate all of the incredibly amazing, stunningly hard work you bring along in the content you produce.

Hi Scott 🙋🏽. This is really Sad. A lot of people make it to the top. And the next thing you know is they are gone for one reason or another. It's even sadder when they die so young. I didn't know him before because I never watched Rocky. I guess you could say it just wasn't for me 🤷🏽 . My deepest sympathies and My sincerest condolences to his family and friends. And thank you Scott for introducing him to me, even if he is resting right now ‼️ hopefully in peace 🙏🏾💯❤️

Tommy was a great talent who had certain demons. He got by on just raw talent alone. It would’ve been amazing if he would’ve just been dedicated to boxing only. He was literally out drinking the night before Mercer fight. ESPN did a wonderful 30 for 30 on Tommy. I’d recommend anyone curious to check it out. This was very cool video Scott. Thanks for sharing.

The little boy you were talking about is mine and Tommy's son Tristin Duke. Trish is not the mother of Tristin. He is 19 now. He also has Trey and Kenzie. Tom also raised my son Justin since he was 10 months old and Justin took his last name when he was still a baby. Tom has been married four times. Once to Dawn Freeman, twice to me and he was married to Trish for two years prior to his death. Tammy is the mother of McKenzie and Cristi is the mother of Trey. Tom died in Sept 2013 and we were able to get some of his remains six weeks later and buried him the following month on October 13, 2013.
