Cool story (and great job to you and Zren!) Bit creepy though. Power imbalances on that level tend to end up badly. Eddy is now basically a pet in a cage.
It doesn't sound like she would be the kind to force anyone to stay, just be regretful at their choice if they choose to leave. Also it doesn't really sound like she has any power to affect anyone beyond her atmosphere.
@@willparry530 Well, it's hard to say on both your points. #2: She seems quite capable of completely changing physical structures across the city at whim. Might be a bit hard to escape the atmosphere if she decided to rearrange the city to make it hard to reach the space port. #1 You are quite correct. She does SEEM like a pleasant enough lass. However, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." and, "Absolute power corrupts absolutely." I'm not saying she is a spoiled brat type of God because we do not get to know her in enough depth. However, she does not seem to be taking proper care of her population at the start of the story. Everything is drab and run down and basically crap. Sure, this can be laid off on her being depressed, but my point is that she shows no concern for her subjects simply because they are not capable of amusing her. Also, the warning at the Diner about playing the pianorgan thingy. She evidently has a temper towards those who displease her. Not the type of God I'd want to be beholden to playing long sets of music for Every. Single. Night. Just my take.
@@sergeantpete6295 I would counter by saying it's not that she doesn't take good care of them--it's more that she doesn't lavish them, because they are still there, and alive. They have what they need, just not everything they *want* As for what she could do--yes, it's possible she could do that, but the presence of a spaceport on the planet makes me think that's highly unlikely. A spaceport implies people regularly come and go, and if she was the kind to give in to whim too much and destroy craft before they left her atmosphere, there likely would not be an actively maintained place for them to land. Either people would stop coming, or they'd glass the planet from orbit and be done with it. Lastly, one does not have to play well to avoid insulting her, one just has to avoid playing at all. You won't get lavished with luxuries, but you won't earn her ire either. We're also never even treated to what happens to anyone who actually does insult her, so to assume the worst consequences seems like jumping the gun a bit.
@@willparry530 To be perfectly honest, we are both "jumping the gun" a bit, since the author does not enlighten us with many details concerning her temperament beyond the subject of music. As for how she takes care of residents, I will say this. When Eddy arrives, the town is basically described as a run down, dingy slum. Perhaps this is merely a mirror of her depressed soul? Perhaps a "Planet Goddess" ought to take joy from making her inhabitants happy instead of leaving them in filth and squalor until she hears a few lively Irish jigs? What I mean is that she is selfish and uncaring. Not qualities I'd want from my God-like patron. At the very least, if Eddy doesn't want to play for a few nights, "Back to the Slum everyone!" Also, I wasn't implying she would destroy anything to prevent him leaving. She might just rearrange the roads randomly. Keep moving things around so that the space port was always on the other side of town. To be honest again, neither of us know exactly what she is capable of aside from somehow upgrading establishments connected to music from (example) a dingy, hole in the wall bar in an alley, to a fancy music venue with fancy hotel suites. lol If I was Eddy, I'd get her to upgrade the diner so that it offered more than fried chicken and burgers. Nothing against either choice, but a bit limited.
@@sergeantpete6295 I liked your points, here's the authors take : Aireen doesn't see herself as 'in charge', only as a participant in the games of the Xenos. All are welcome, provided they don't piss her off. Her world is not the visitors or the priests, those are hobbies. She is old and difficult to please but not vindictive.
