  • Just bought a "new" (2013) horn - P. Mauriat PMXT-066RUL!
    This is a comparison with my old horn, a 1994 Yanagisawa T900 with its lacquer removed.
    Mouthpiece: Jody Jazz HR 8*, Ligature: François Louis UL, Reed: Rico Select Jazz 3 M Unfiled.
    Music: St Thomas by Sonny Rollin, Aebersold Play a long.

    Beautiful sound of both

    Both are great...Mauriat broader, throaty, and the Yani clearer, more focused and, just to my ears, more expressive and better intonation. But I am biased and accustomed to Yani's, since I have played a T991 for about twenty years and absolutely love it. I can pick them out in blind tests sometimes and it surprises me. Somehow, I just love the sound of Yani's...some call it vanilla ice cream, but I love vanilla ice cream, because you can add your own toppings and mix in fruits and nuts and make it anything you like. That is why I love the Yani.

    I had to laugh when you said that the old horn was from 1994....
    my horn is a 1935 King Zephyr Tenor saxophone... the first year of series 1
    It’s built like a tank and has beautiful Art Deco accents. It weighs a little more than most horns, and the keys are really hard to bend. When I got it, it was a closet queen and hadn’t been played since the 1930’s. 95% of the lacquer is still on...

    Both are super close in my ears. In my opinion, this proves that it matters more about the player than the saxophone, reed, or mouthpiece you play on.

    • @jseligmann
      @jseligmann 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, the sound is mostly mouthpiece and reed and, of course, the player. In many instances, the saxophone itself will stand out only if it's out of tune.😉

    Good comparison!
    the Mauriat has a nicer and sweeter sound than the Yanagisawa. Perhaps the yanagisawas as well as the yamahas work well and are great instruments but they lack the subtlety and the velvety that many Taiwanese saxophones achieve, especially the 66 RUL, perhaps these are the closest to the great American saxophones, conn, buescher, etc.
    But as in many other areas, "made in Japan" continues to have a greater psychological burden than "Made in Taiwan"

    • @marike1100
      @marike1100 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yanagisawa is “hand made in Japan”,they are, according to many including legendary repairman Matt Stohrer, some of the finest saxophones made, period. The Yani here has a more focused, modern tone versus the overly spread, excessively dark, tubby tone of the Mauriat. The real psychological burden is among players trying to convince themselves that paying Selmer Paris/Yanagisawa money for a made in Taiwan saxophone is a wise course of action. 😂

    This must surely be the only proper comparative assessment ever. Congratulations on a very clever and well thought out protocol so elegantly and brilliantly executed. All comparative performance tests must in future be exclusively based on this most excellent and accurate and brutally forthright protocol Incidentally the results of this test were totally unexpected and actually astoundingly so. A test based on your protocol gas lighting the difference in sound of a true full bodied sound and a modern so called bright sound such a test would I think be intensely appreciated by saxophone aficionados and I for one would hopefully be looking forward to such in the near future. Congratulations again for a most brilliantly designed and flawlessly executed comparative performance assessment. I wish you the best in all things.

      Dear Mr Erik,
      Thank you for your reply, There was not one word of overkill in my comments on your totally accurate comparative assessment. As a brilliant exponent of the saxophone, I would be greatly appreciative if you could state , what in your considered and tested opinion is the horn with the fullest body sound, not contingent upon the player’s skill. I am not any sort of saxophonist and have been using a Conn which was in the very old days, considered the gold standard vis a vis a full body sound.Sadly this instrument is quite beyond repair and I have gone through two Selmer VIs, one Keilwerth and cannot adapt to the thin body sound of these so called world leaders. So among the modern instruments which in your actual playing experience do you consider that with a really full body sound and with nothing else mattering. Thank you.

    Question Erik: did you have the lacquer remove from the Yani? If so, was that on purpose i.e. to get a darker punchier sound? Because now the Yani approaches the Mauriat in that sense. Normally you would expect from Yani's and Yamaha's to sound to clean and flat.... (I have a yts 62 so I can affirm this :) )

    • @erikjaensson
      @erikjaensson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, The main purpose back in the years when I did this was to get a vintage look. I didn’t know that it would influence the sound that much. I also let the instrument technician change to metal reflectors (from original plastic). That also affect the sound and projection. I think the sound got a bit darker and in the same time more overtones.

The PM is much stronger and tune better, but I still like the timbre of the Yana. That, I got after the removal of the lacquer plus the change to metal reflectors on the Y. I like my old Yana much better than newer ones with the clear lacquer on.

      Thank you Warren! :) I don't really like new Yanis either. Mine is from 1994 and has got a different sound and feeling due to non laquer body and metal reflectors + age. I think removing the laquer free up the sound for more overtones and more flexible and spread sound. I should upload a new comparison now since I've learned how to get a richer sound out of my P Mauriat. I also changed mouthpiece to a very nice Theo Wanne Gaia 1 HR 8.

      Didn't expect a reply, much less a quick one! As long as I have you Erik, I sold a MK VI after 40 years and moved to a Yamaha Custom Z. Great Selmer sound but resistant down low and in altissimo. The Z is a great horn, but I don't love it's core, which to me is a bit bright and thin ('JM,' don't even think about trolling me here). I'm going to trial a Trevor James Signature Custom Raw. Also thinking I need to try your Mauriat. FWIW, I did not like the Eastman 52nd St. at all. They look similar? Grateful for any thoughts! And, mouthpiece-wise, I'm aware my Mac Sax FJ IV is a bit bright, and going to try an optimized Link. Thanks Erik!

    • @erikjaensson
      @erikjaensson  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome! Interesting thoughts! I've only heard others play on Yamaha Custom Z and I agree about it being a bit bright and thin. The Mauriat on the other hand can be super fat and powerful, so it comes to personal taste and what music you're playing. For me the PM works for everything from soft jazz ballads with it's dark and full sound to pop and funk with it's powerful tone. Maybe not so good for classic music, too dirty sound. I guess the Trevor James could be somewhat similar to the PM 66. TJ are rare in Sweden so I haven't tried it. Good luck!

    • @thewarhenk
      @thewarhenk 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Trevor James got a couple of great write-ups, one from a guy (www.shwoodwind.co.uk/) who thinks/hears as I do. His impressions of the sonic properties of horns I've played are in line with mine, so, I'm hoping the TJ matches his description as well, but I may also try a P. M 66 I think! FYI, TJ only has one N. American dealer located in western Canada, so they're scarce here as well. Thanks Erik!

      Yes, more clear I agree. But now I have a clearerer mouthpiece to compensate (Vandoren Java T95).

    These p mauriats are just overrated. And overpriced! With good headphones u can can hear a big difference between the two. Good horns, ok. Great horns? Noop!
