  • How to take your amateur radio station off grid and go solar power. This gives you emergency communications ability in case of a grid failure due to a natural disaster.
FT8 allows weak signal communication. It works at very low power levels including QRP.
It also allows very short QSOs so you can rack up lots of contacts in a short period of time. Standard frequencies are used on all HF bands from 6M through 160M. If you have antennas that cover each band there is always a band that is open.

I like FT8, especially for events like POTA or field day. You can be running FT8 and still talk to people around you, and if you decide to you want to talk, simply spin the dial and pick up the mic.

Actually I love FT8. The title was made in jest. It provides a great method to test equipment designs as well as propagation very quickly without trying to bust thru QRM. Thanks for your comment.

Does not seem like FT 8 will let you actually communicate anything. Can spontaneously send a question or vary the message to the other station?

Very interesting content. Thank you. May I ask your age? I'm 78 now also had a laps in operating years. Now K7DT from WN4APX IN 62. I find that messing with a computer destracts me from the fun of hamming but it's easy and amazing. 73 Don.

Its a beacon net that needs way too much technology. We always had cw beacons that were easy to read without the modern qrm.

I think of ragchewing or certificate chasing with 'Worked All Whatever' awards and contesting on HF as a distraction to my ham radio hobby pursuits. Those are a tiny aspect of my interests in ham radio. I'm mostly an experimenter with longwave to light, analog to digital, antique radios to SDR kits. But I also do public service and emergency service ham work, as well as Elmering, which is my favorite aspect of the hobby. Ham radio is a very large hobby with so many different aspects. It's one hobby that is many hobbies combined.

I'm a HF phone person but recently messed with FT4 and FT8. I just wanted to experiment with the other modes that could do without having to buy a load of extra gear. It could be useful for me because in my home using phone would be disturbing to my wife trying to sleep after her nightshift. So there were times when I wanted to play radio but was unable, of course no problem with data modes.
Also, FT8 is a shop that opens earlier than the supermarket (HF phone), closes later and can be open on those days where the supermarket is closed all day.
Its useful and definitely adds variety but for me personally it's not something I could do too much of.

Hi Jim, thanks for introducing me to FT8. Quite fascinating. Let the research begin.
Hope you don't mind if suggest an alteration to your powerboard switchover between inverter and normal mains (@15'49).
I have assumed that the inverter doesn't have a synchronization to mains function.
The problem I see is when the inverter and the mains are not synchronized, the computer power supply is going to see a very fast voltage transition as you switch over from inverter to the mains.
Likewise, both the inverter and the computer are likely to be stressed when switching 'instantaneously' from mains to the running inverter.
Inductive loads will give a pretty enthusiastic voltage spike response to microsecond transitions from the positive peak to the negative trough of the mains, Capacitive loads (filtering etc) are going to get rather extreme current spikes.
I assume the battery on the laptop computer is usable, maybe a few seconds delay between disconnecting one ac power source and connecting the other will prevent blowing things up / shortening equipment life?

Thanks for your comment. The transfer time of the switch seems to be enough to prevent any problem.

There are many QRPers on FT8. Some put their power level in their 73 line. When the FT8 frequency gets crowded folks turn up the power. We need another FT8 frequency on each band. 73, jim, KQ8E

@@Jimscoolstuff why not take it all. The bands are only wasted by people like me who talk to each other

My record is 100 dxcc on 10M in one week on Ft8... Something I wouldn't be bragging about, but it was an experiment to see how easy to get dxcc on Ft8, even on 10M..
