The planet was in shambles and depleted of energon when Prime and Megatron disappeared. He rebuilt most of Cyberton's structures, created new, deadlier killing machines and everything ran efficiently while Megatron was away.

Shockwave was always my favourite Decepticon. The best design. Apparently, in the comics that Marvel published around the time of the G1 cartoons, he was far more powerful, and a real rival to Megatron.
He wasn't more powerful just as powerful.
Which I didn't like as Megatron was the only leader for like 4 issues.
What makes him the best design?

I still have those comics. They have MANY inconsistencies, and Shockwave's power from issue to issue is one of them. For example: the original (4-issue) limited series ends with him blasting all combatants apart in one shot, including Megatron and Optimus Prime. Two issues later, he beats Megatron to a pulp in single combat, but Megatron holds his own... kind of. By issue 12, he's so weak that Optimus Prime chucks him into a tar pit and rolls away. Much later (issue 38ish?) he ends up dueling Fortress Maximus in space, whom he can apparently match. And so on...
Yeh, in the comics he beat Megatron and even all Dinobots at once.

Sure, the G1 cartoon and the G1 movie had a lot of animation errors, but they were still good to watch. I mean, let's face it: 2D animation is never perfect, but still entertaining.

It's garbage. Hastily written and animated and aimed at very young children.
The Marvel Comic version of Shockwave was quite a bit different than the cartoon. Due to his intelligence and raw power, he considered himself the natural choice for leader of the Decepticons. He defeated all the weakened Autobots and an injured Megatron in combat and took over as commander of the Earth bound Decepticons for a long period of time. Granted, he's always been portrayed as a bit aloof and disconnected from his fellow Decepticons, but he was a much more powerful and a bigger player in the comics than he was in the cartoon. He certainly wasn't a loyal servant to Megatron in the comics, like he was written in the cartoon.
I prefer him in the show. Corey Burton’s voice as him was just so memorable.
@@romanramirez7847 I think a mixture of both would have been ideal. He should have kept his G1 animated voice and personality, but his massive power should have been better acknowledged. He basically transforms into a superweapon, like a robot-form version of the Yamato wave-motion gun.

22:14 - Absolute domination. Had Optimus not turned up.. Shockwave would have wiped the lot of them out. I believe his alt form used a terrible amount of Energon; hence his reluctance to use it unless the most dire of circumstances.

Starscream would've had a speaking role but it was cut . He would've been voiced by EpicVoiceGuy aka Jon Baily, the same person who voiced Shockwave and Soundwave in the Bumblebee movie .

G1 was never consistent but the movie beat the record of inconsitances. Suddenly a lot of characters became so easy to kill.
Within the story, it was alluded to, but admittedly never outright explained, that both sides were dangerously low on energon and power so they were basically walking/flying/etc around on life support which explained why they suddenly became so vulnerable to even the simplest of attacks...of course, we know in the real world they had to make room for new toys so someone had to go to the bench, so to speak, to make room in the lineup :)
As for other inconsistencies throughout the show glorious run , hey man, it was the "magic of the 80's"...

Would not say underrated. Shockwave is one of the few characters to make into the Transformers Hall of Fame, not to mention he's played a large role in most recent Transformers media (Animated, Prime, the High Moon Cybertron games, the IDW comics, and even Dark of the Moon).

Fun niche fact I just recently learned from a fellow commenter:
The voice actor for Shockwave based his performance on the character "Sark" from the 1981 movie Tron. Decades later, in the 2005 video game Kingdom Hearts II, the actor for Shockwave was hired to voice the character of Sark. Kinda full circle

I personally relate with shockwave. I have always lived far from my friends growing up, and things like FaceTime were my constant ways of communication with my friend group. So I always related with him being the decepticon who lives apart from the others, alone, and can only video chat his comrades.

I've always loved that scene -- one of the few instances in which Shockwave's power is acknowledged. The Autobots seem to be winning, but with one blast he overturns them all.

For being the "emotionless" one of the deceps, his voice is oddly passionate..
This version of Shockwave was unfortunately written separately from the Shockwave of the comics. The writers of the TV show were unaware of the way Marvel comics had written the character, and so made him into a scientist that was guardian of Cybertron and loyal to Megatron rather than the emotionless and logic driven brute that saw fit to lead the Deceptions himself seen in the comics. Recent versions of the character, such as in IDW comics, Prime, and the Cybertron games have combined both versions of the character by making him an emotionless scientist run by logic who is sometimes loyal to Megatron and sometimes not.
I recall a story where Shockwave's VA said he got the job specifically because they wanted to hire the actor who played Sark from Tron, but got this guy based on his ability to impersonate the actor so well.
Shockwave's cartoon interpretation is hands down my favorite because of his mix of passion and zeal for the decepticon cause and Megatron mixed with his straightforward, logical approach to most situations. Also, don't think he's 100% loyal, "Have a safe journey, Megatron..." That scene is way to loaded with implications, especially if you've read the Marvel comics.

Seeing all the dynamics between Shockwave and Starscream, it would have been awesome if the rumored story line of Season 4 would have happened where Shockwave and Starscream returned to the TV show as a team to oppose Galvatron as well as The Autobots.

G1 had an amazing voice cast overall
Out of all of the Decepticons, Shockwave was and still to this day remains my all time favourite Transformer. He was the whole package, incredibly smart, cold, calculating and of course evil. I always enjoyed the episodes that were set on Cybertron because i knew we would get to see Shockwave have more screen time and play a big role in the stories. Love the fact that Shockwave was voiced by Corey Burton who would later go on to provide the of voice Brainiac for Superman the animated series who was also another cold unfeeling villainous machine. A Decepticon who remained behind on Cyberton and protected the planet as it's guardian for 4 million years deserves true respect. I wished we had got an episode where Shockwave came to earth and joined the Decepticons in battle against the Autobots, i think that would have been a lot of fun. Shockwave is easily in my top 3 favourite Decepticons.

According to the toy description, Shockwave was second in command to Megatron. He was also scheming to take Megatron's place as leader. The storyline was completely opposite for the cartoon.

Thanks for the work you did here Reaper Roar. It's sometimes painful seeing Shockwave as a lackey. In the original Marvel Comic , this guy was a menacing bad-ass of the first order, an evil Mr. Spock. The Dinobots were created just to stop him.

I like to think of Shockwave as the Waluigi of the Decepticons. He may not have as much screentime as Starscream, Soundwave, or Megs himself, but he's part of the family and warrants as much respect as the others except Starscream. The cyclops guarded and waited on Cybertron for 4 million years for Primus' sake.
Of course it helps that Marvel's G1 comics from around the same time portrayed him with much more screen time and importance.
