My Old School is about their early days back at Bard College, when their original drummer was none other than a young fellow student named Chevy Chase! 🤣
"101.5 WPDH... Poughkeepsie!" I was born in 1975. I have probably heard this tune on the radio/TV/TH-cam/Facebook/grocery stores/elevators/gas stations/shopping malls etc... somewhere at least once every single month I've been alive. That's how popular and iconic this tune is. A 51-year-old song from 1973 which still gets played in perpetuity. Absolutely amazing!
My first summer as a teenage girl. Too big for my britches! Barefoot, bell bottoms, "reelin' In the Years" roaring in my head!!! OMGoodness. Good times. First little boyfriend kiss. STILL ONE MY FAV S🌊🔥🎶🥰
The lyric in My Old School at the end that mentions Daddy G., is the reference to G Gordon Liddy who at that time was a prosecutor, who went onto be the mastermind behind the Watergate break in. 😳 Though the old Midnight Special videos are cool, the original studio versions are, and should be the go to for reactions first time.
Elliott Randall had played with Walter & Donald in Jay & The Americans backing band. He did his part in one take! They asked him to join the band but he declined, preferring to be a well-paid, highly in demand session guitarist while doing his own solo projects on the side. Probably didn't think Steely Dan would last beyond a couple of albums. And didn't know at the time the boys would stop touring in a couple of years. But, yeah, Randall kinda missed out. However, he did play the lead on Irene Cara's "Fame." And was with Asia for a whole year.
he was interviewed and said the reason he didnt join was that he was good friends with both skunk and denny, him joining would mean one of them would be gone
Thanks, Lee. In “My Old School,” I like the three mini solos, followed by the longer one at the end. I also love the little phrase the horns play at 10:07 , echoing California tumbling into the sea. 😂
I really enjoyed seeing the Midnight Special performances because I know the records so well, since 1973. It was good to see them live. And it’s good to hear them now. They’re so fine. I always love hearing Reelin’ In the Years and My Old School. My Old School is a very favorite.
@@ShiverHingeI grew up in California and the state planted Oleanders in the center in the freeways. In the 70s I had a high school English teacher who had a night job driving a truck. One night he fell asleep at the wheel and went into the center divide. We heard about it and nicknamed him “Oleander Rick”.
My guitar teacher used to play Reelin in the Years and at one gig he had a string break in the middle of his solo. He kept going as though nothing had happened and took a beer break straight after. Always been a favourite for me.
Hell ya !!! Back in the day I was all about Black Sabbath, ELP, Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper etc. I like a few songs by Steely Dan but as I got older I listened to more and Loved them!!! Rock on dude!!

The studio versions of these gems are so well-engineered that they are definitely the go-to tracks in this case. Recording engineers and producers never get their kudos for making the musician's recorded tracks and albums sound so good. Perhaps the loss of all that engineering talent when record and stereo stores disappeared is one of the main reasons why music made today doesn't sound as awesome. Rock on L33.
Before Steely Dan's first release, Walter Becker and Donald Fagan wrote a song for Barbra Streisand, called "I Mean to Shine", which appears on her Barbra Joan Streisand Album 1972. It definitely has their (Steely Dan) sound.
love the guitar tone on "Reelin;", nice warm, fuzz tone, but not muddy. Elliot Randall has said he ran his Strat thru an Ampeg SVT. Man, what a sound! I also love Don Felder's guitar tone on the solo to "One of These Nights". Every guitar player is chasing tone, trying to get that right sound. Neil Young is definitely a guy who's crafted a tone and sound. But Randall had such a great solo and tone that Jimmy Page had supposedly said it's one of his favorite solos all time. Love the Dan!
Reelin in the years was my first introduction to Steely Dan at the age of about 12 or 13. I used to walk across a field to an apartment complex that had a game room with a cool jukebox and I would play pinball and listen to War and Steely Dan. My Old School came later, and it's a great track too! Don't think you have reacted to Janie Runaway (nobody has that I can find) off the Two Against Nature LP. Janie Runaway along with Kid Charlemagne and The Fez are some of my favorite Dan tunes, although I seem to love them all! Thanks for the studio versions Lee.. in my experience, in almost all cases, the studio versions are the best. Take care all, and keep on rockin in the free world!!!!
As a drummer I loved playing this song. I was lucky enough to have a guitarist and vocalists to pull this off. Trying to play Steely Dan covers are risky. They will make your sound great if you can do it but you really look stupid if you don't. Their songs were all about precision. Miss a beat or a note and it really stands out. But this song got people up and dancing and that is what the venue wants. Thirsty active patrons who drink a lot of beer, eat a lot of overpriced bar grub and stick around to closing time.
The studio is where B&F crafted their songs, it's what they heard in their heads and put on tape. Flawless. We were 17 years old and after driving down Sunset to the sea, getting some beer and laying on the beach, we would listen to these songs, singing with Donald, when California falls into the sea. Those days were good and getting better. Checking out the west of Hollywood girls (we were from the Valley, near Magnolia Bl.). We were looking for our own babylon sisters, and there were many. Who knew we were living future SD songs while we were listening to SD! And then, our high school friend got hired to play drums with Steely Dan in 1973.
The vocals on Reelin is killer! I love that song. I'd not thought of it before, but it does have kind of a Boz Scaggs shuffle sound to it. I love My Old School. The lyrics are kind of cryptic, but the music is sublime, especially with the horns.
Skunk Baxter on the guitar he used on 'My Old School'. “Wow. Well, one is the Stratocaster I used on My Old School. I actually routed out the body the afternoon before the session. I was out in the studio parking lot with a router. Put the electronics in. Assembled it, strung it up. Took it to the studio and cut the track. It’s not a typical Stratocaster because it’s a solid bird’s eye maple body with no body cutaways. That adds a lot of sustain."
My recommendations for the best two tracks that you haven't yet played from Can't Buy A Thrill would be 'Fire In The Hole' and 'Turn That Heartbeat Over Again'. In fact, I'd also say that they're the best two tracks on the whole album, and both are in my top ten Steely Dan songs of all time.
Interesting to see you do these together, as for some reason I always associated them with each other even though they’re from different albums. I guess it’s the reference to “the weekend at the college” in the former.
Love how the outro to Reelin', in its final moments, goes back to basic Chuck Berry riffing ~~~~~~ I've said it before in older comments, but this stuff is why I (& people like me) used to ride that analog rotary volume knob up to 10 during the fade-out, just to catch every last drop.
Never get enough of Steely Dan, so much perfect talent! Try "FM" or even Donald Fagan's solo album Kamakiriad. Good of you, Lee, to backtrack with the studio versions.
Never get tired of the Dan. Two good choices, but when it comes to these guys it's all good. Always such great session players. Mr. Randall tears it up, and Skunk really has the " funk " going on in My Old School. Nice story behind that song concerning an event they had during their days at Bard College. Knowing the story gives appreciation to the humor in their lyrics. I particularly like the way Donald sticks it to Daddy G ( G Gordan Liddy of Watergate fame). Mr. Fagen & Mr. Becker injected humor into a lot of their lyrics. Even the name of their band. Not sure if you know what a Steely Dan is? Nice job! Enjoyed this. Been a BIG DAN FAN from their beginning. Like fine wine, just seems to get better with age. I'm also a BIG BOZ FAN! If you haven't already, check out the Dukes Of September with Donald Fagen, Boz Scaggs and Michael McDonald ( Doobie Bros.) Great stuff! Donald Fagen also has some great solo work. Switching gears, I would also encourage you checking out Carpenters music. Richard and Karen Carpenter were an extremely talented duo. Karen's ANGELIC voice will bring a tear to your eye. And you being a drummer, I'm sure you will appreciate her superb skills behind a kit. Unheard of back then! Well, so much to see, so much to hear, so much to do. Lots to look forward to. Keep up the good work! Rest in peace Walter and Karen! Nice job! Enjoyed this.
Love me some Steely Dan! I am fairly new to your channel so I don't know if you've reacted to my favorite song of theirs. It's "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" off of their Pretzel Logic album. I just love the vibe of that song.

I have gone on this steely dan journey with you as well, Lee. Thank you for playing all these wonderful songs ❤
What always gets lost on these tunes, sadly, is the spectacularly solid bass playing of Walter Becker. R.I.P. Walter

My first Steely Dan Moment: hearing Reelin in the Years from the frat room next door. I was hooked........and still am
Was glad I got to see these guys live, years ago before Walter passed away
I love the horns depicting the "fall into the sea".
Steely Dan was one of those bands that tastefully crossed everybody in highschool whether you were a Black Sabbath or Stevie Wonder fan.
One of my All Time Favorite bands EVER!
What a combo of songs ❤
'My Old School' is Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY. I have two alums in my family.
Two of the best from one of the best bands of all time!
Two big radio hits for Steely Dan ... love it
Great to hear you got your Steely Dan T-shirt! Outrageous!
My first summer as a teenage girl. Too big for my britches! Barefoot, bell bottoms, "reelin' In the Years" roaring in my head!!! OMGoodness. Good times. First little boyfriend kiss. STILL ONE MY FAV S🌊🔥🎶🥰
Jimmy Page once said the outro solo on “Reelin’” is his favorite guitar solo. But too short on the studio version!
The lyric in My Old School at the end that mentions Daddy G., is the reference to G Gordon Liddy who at that time was a prosecutor, who went onto be the mastermind behind the Watergate break in. 😳

Their studio stuff is audio perfection.
Always liked them, but when they rhymed "oleander" with "I can't stand her" and "California" with "Tried to warn ya" I was definitely hooked
And who even mentions Oleander anyway? One of my favorite scents!
@@ShiverHingeMy street name that I lived on growing up in Chicago was Oleander.
I was hooked after I heard the title cut from Aja. I said “I want more of that.” And that was a year and 80 songs ago lol

great clip of them live on midnight special doing this song......watch skunk and denny!
More Dan, Can't go wrong!
Jeff Baxter is one hell of a guitarist
“Can’t Buy A Thrill” is still my favorite SD LP.
"Reelin'" is Skunk and Elliott Randall. Randall plays all the solos.
Two of their earliest, and Best songs.
that outro is all Skunk
Jeff Baxter played the solos on "My Old School". "Countdown To Ecstasy" is a must listen.
2 of their best early songs
Reelin' in the Years: Donald Fagen - piano, vocals
Walter Becker - bass, vocals
Elliott Randall - guitar
Jeff “Skunk” Baxter - guitar
Denny Dias - guitar
Jim Hodder - drums
Victor Feldman - percussion
My Old School: Donald Fagen - piano, lead vocals, backup vocals
Walter Becker - bass
Denny Dias - rhythm guitar
Jeff Baxter - lead guitar
Jim Hodder - drums, percussion
Sherlie Matthews, Myrna Matthews, Patricia Hall, Royce Jones - backup vocals

Those two songs are great choices. I vote for both of them, especially Turn That Heartbeat Over Again.
"My Old School" is my favorite Steely Dan song, and my favorite instrumental break of any song.
More cow bell!
Fire in the Hole and Brooklyn Owes the Charmer (Under Me)

The awesome Elliott Randall on guitar after several other guitarists couldn't quite get the right vibe. Jimmy Page's favorite guitar solo !
