- Shipwrights of the North Sea REDUX - Board Game Review - I Hope They Remember You
The aim of Shipwrights of the North Sea: Redux is to be the player with the most Victory Points (VP) at the game’s end. Points are gained by constructing Longships and Buildings, recruiting Jarls, attracting Heroes, and collecting Gold. Over the course of 5 Rounds, players will draft Village Cards, and must carefully manage their resources and workforce to set their settlement apart as the most glorious amongst all the clans.
Redux Version:
Shipwrights of the North Sea: Redux is an entirely new game. While it shares a lot of thematic elements and player goals from the original, the core gameplay has been completely rebuilt to create an experience much more in line with what fans of Garphill Games have come to expect.

People can have fun basically playing their own board. There's plenty of people that like Welcome to the Neighborhood/Moon, for one example. If you know that going in that's fine and not necessarily a negative.
But in those games there is no waiting for others to finish.
What Mik said. And those other games don't get a free pass.
Stoked! Getting this just for solo anyway 👍
I backed the game as well and me and my group love it! We play 5 player all the time and do it turn based rather than simultaneous. Yeah it takes a bit longer but we gather to enjoy each others company and a game as well. Never understood the rush in playing games but to each their own. The advantage of doing turn based is that we can help each other and perhaps learn a trick or two. It's fun to see what works and what doesn't. Good game, glad I backed it and VERY good review!
thank you for another fantastic review - this for me is what Legacy of Yu could have been. Great solo experience!
Thank you!
Great review, as always!
Update on the mini YT-player bug/feature: works on this vid, not on your "10 regrets for the channel" vid.
Still bewildered by this bug of yours!
I'm surprised Luke, you haven't played Legacy of Yu yet. Highly recommend it. I'd love to see a comparison video in the future. This one is just outstanding as a solo.
I reached a limit of solo only games I needed and I wasn't into the art style of it. But I'll try it if I can.
In contrary, i believe this is good not only as a solo but also as 3p and 4p game. I have recently played with 4 and everyone enjoyed!
They may have enjoyed it, but there was no added benefit that they were there. They would have had the same level playing it solo.
The best thing about this review is the foreshadowing of the negative Septima review to come. Can't wait!!!
I recall the -ve comments about Septima when it landed, so jumped at a chance to play it to get a chance to see for myself. Let's see what Luke makes of it, but leaving out the details, my overall feeling was ' it's like a very interesting late prototype that still needs some refinement / balancing'.
😈
I do appreciate the complaint about multiplayer - and especially the challenge to teach a game where players are meant to simultaneously 'run their engines'. When teaching, I do like to ensure players feel confident in the rules and supported, and such a design choice is problematic for that. At least in something like Furnace, there's meaningful interaction in the bidding phase. I don't see card drafting as a particularly enjoyable mechanism, and crucially it's also problematic for supporting new players in making reasonable decisions - e.g. someone might think "oh I'll focus on ships" and find that 1st draft has condemned them to struggle for the whole game.
Haven't played this yet but it looks a bit like It's a Wonderful World, which is one of my favourite solo games, so might have to give this one a try too
I really appreciate your review of this game. Exploring both the flaws and features of what this game entails.
I can certainly see the comparison to Legacy of Yu. I own both but haven’t played Shipwrights yet. I have played Legacy of Yu and for me it’s such an enjoyable experience. It hits all the right buttons for the decision space it gives and win or lose I have a fantastic time with it.
Hopefully this game can tickle some of those same things while having enough differences to keep both.
Legacy of Yu is one I do need to try but I'm taken up with Tainted Grail currently.
@@TheBrokenMeeple Yeah Tainted Grail would certainly keep one occupied. I was very interested in it, but I have two young daughters that are really sensitive to anything that might be viewed as scary so I have to be extra cautious with themes and art in my collection.
Hope it’s a great experience for you though.
I agree, not sure why you'd want to play it with more than two, but it is my favourite lighter weight Garphill solo game, as play time around 45mins, would also be nice if there was an expansion enhancing the solo mode further. Going forward I do hope they produce at least one similar weight game within their next triology, as the South trilogy is abit on the heavy side for my tastes.
Agreed it's a great solo game, but it is tough as hell. Eight plays in and still haven't beaten it.
The only reason I see to play it as multiplayer, is that you are playing the Rune Saga and then you are racing to get the runes and the victory to get does advantages for the next games in the trilogy.
Could you house rule Pulling out all the building cards for its own deck and draw 1 per draft hand for each player so there is consistency in the most integral part of the engine? Or use the solo drafting rules for 2+ players?
2 player drafting isn't too bad honestly. Be interesting to try that other variant.
I've got the original trilogy, in their small boxes, but your review has tempted me to upgrade Shipwrights. Does this version still work with the Runesaga?
Yes, the Redux has new Runesaga tiles that you replace the old ones with to make it compatible
Maybe Pitch Meeting guy will branch out to board games.
Can i ask, is the board sized to fit the largwr box or would it really actually fit in the old box? I wanted to get this but im considering skipping because im honestly quite pissed off that they didnt give the option of a smaller box to make my existing 5 small boxes.
I can probably live without it as theres just so much other stuff to play.
Hmmm, I'd have to double check, but it folds in 3 segments.......so maybe you could actually get away with it. There's no big square board. However I think the rulebook would be too big maybe?
Damn those big rule books! 😂
I was really impressed with this one. Also, how have you not played Legacy of Yu when it is garphill and solo? Play it when you can and you will see the similar DNA big time. This very much felt like multiplayer Yu to me with the deckbuilding switched for card drafting. I like both.
IIRC Legacy of Yu was the inspiration for revisiting this game.
I reached a limit of solo games and didn't like the art style of Legacy of Yu but I'll try it hopefully some day.
I passed on this game because I had heard so much negativity about the original. Sounds like I should of had my normal trust in Shem to make a great game. Thanks for the review!
Yeah this is nothing like the previous one.
I saw this in the discord of Garphil Games and came rushing to see it. They should give you an inventors review copy, whats the worst that can happen? Its just your brutal and honest opinion. I really liked this game, is a good solo, way to good, not much interaction and they will not release an expansion, I think it does need more cards, I´m already seen the same combos after 10+ plays.
I've asked before but they are hesitant to post too many copies to the UK from NZ. 😔
@@TheBrokenMeepleBoomer, well, I do admire any publisher that sends you a copy, means they have at least confidence in there game. Hopefully my books get fair reviews like yours, keep it going.
Are there any issues incorporating the expansion?
Expansion?? Do you mean Runesaga? There's some Runesaga pieces in the box to compensate.
I completely agree with the review, I think this one is great solo. Especially in comparison to Scholars, which, erm, isn’t.
I like Scholars solo fine.
Wow... Actually re read the rulebook about solo drafting... Been playing with 5.... Ffs...
Only 5 cards? Ouch, ultra hard mode!
