  • ‘Putting more people in prison hasn’t made us safer’ - Congressional candidate Jamaal Bowman wants to repeal a 25-year-old crime bill that sacrificed communities of color to a radical expansion of mass incarceration.

In US news and current events today, congressional candidate Jamaal Bowman sat down with NowThis News to talk about Bill Clinton's 1994 crime bill and the effects it's had on the criminal justice system, mass incarceration, and more.
    Bowman:
It’s now been 25 years since the 1994 crime bill. It’s time to repeal it.
And it’s abundantly clear -- putting more people in prison hasn’t made us safer.
What it has done is decimate communities of color and ripped families and communities like mine apart.
The 1994 crime bill was written by a bunch of politicians who wanted to show that they were ‘tough on crime.’
So they passed mandatory minimums and tougher sentences, three strikes and you’re out laws, and many more arrests for drug offenses.
The bill gave states billions of dollars to build more prisons, and keep people in prison longer.
The result -- the crime bill has filled our nation’s prisons and jails with our fellow Americans - most of them black or Latino.
We spent and keep spending billions of dollars on incarceration and enforcement, instead of prevention.
In the 1990s, politicians -- Democrats and Republicans -- literally supported cuts to welfare and social services while building more prisons as a response to poverty and disinvestment in communities of color. We’re still living with the consequences today.
We were building more prisons at a time when we needed better schools, libraries, and community centers in places like the Bronx, and Yonkers and Mount Vernon.
It was just a few years after the Central Park 5 Case. I was a teenager. And as a young black man living in New York, I remember very well when Donald Trump bought full-page ads in the city’s newspapers calling for the death penalty for my young brothers.
I’ve been an educator for the last 20 years, and a principal in the Northeast Bronx for the past ten years. And I’m running for Congress in New York’s 16th District.
My opponent - Eliot Engel - helped pass the 1994 crime bill. It’s definitely time to repeal it.
For over a decade, I’ve worked directly with the people most impacted by mass incarceration. As an educator and principal - you see the impact on children and their families everyday.
How can you concentrate in school when your father, sister, aunt, or brother is locked up because they can’t afford bail?
How can you focus on learning, when you have to walk through metal detectors, and when there are more police officers in your school than counselor? Can a child truly thrive when her school resembles a police state?
One of the things the ’94 crime bill did was put more police officers in schools - directly funding what’s known as the school to prison pipeline.
Black and brown families were overpoliced in our communities, and now overpoliced in our schools, too.
That’s why I decided to open my own school, and do things differently.
The Cornerstone Academy for Social Action is a middle school in the North Bronx, located in a historically oppressed community that’s been impacted by racist policies like redlining, disinvestment, and the ‘94 crime bill.
We are a restorative justice school that educates the whole child. And we guide them toward becoming transformative agents of change in their own communities. Our former students have gone on to great trade schools and prestigious institutions like MIT, Cornell, and Howard university.
We have conquered the school-to-prison pipeline.
I’m proud of what we have done. But CASA is just the beginning. It’s just one school. If we want to cure our addiction to neglect and torture, we have to start at the top.
We can’t rely on the same politicians who created our broken criminal justice system to be the ones to fix it.
We need leadership that reflects our communities and our experiences.

Well, he blatantly lied on-stage Iowa LGBTQ Forum - said the '94 crime bill didn't increase incarceration. I don't understand why the African American community still supports and backs him! He has a terrible track record and he dodges, lies, fumbles and pretty much behaves like Trump when confronted with facts. He needs to go. He has clogged up the race. With him gone, imagine the more robust conversations the other contenders will have. He is holding up the movement.

@@Nighhhts let me start of by saying I don't know much about guns. From what I have heard from a trusted source that does know about guns, it looks like the Democratic Platform that's about banning assault weapon will only disarm lower income people, and I can see why you would be mad about that. Second, I don't see why you would be outraged by a mask mandate because there is a pandamic. If you are outraged by mandated mask, then are you outraged that people have to wear clothes to go out in public? Lastly, the two issues you brought have nothing to do with Socialism or Communism. As for Biden being a radical leftist, he is far from it. He isn't for medicare for all, free college, legal cannabis, pardoning non violent drug offenders, end the wars among other issues. You can't call someone radical left besed on their view on two issues. Highly suggest join a lefty group on social media or follow a lefty on twitter and see how they feel about.

Sounds as simple as dont commit crimes. Yes some non-violent crimes have sentences that are far to harsh. But knowing the consequences people still test their luck. They need to take accountability for their actions, not sit their and blame the system.

  • @riverviewmirrorbrokeoff9703
    @riverviewmirrorbrokeoff9703 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Btw that’s not victimizing the victim when they are non violent offenders to whoever said that. Too many families lives are ruined from the son, bother or father, etc...all over a personal sized amount of pot (and sadly because of the color of their skin) coming from a mixed family I have seen this personally especially for my cousins. If we don’t start addressing this issue as taxpayers we lose. On another note this gentleman’s message, story and contributions are amazing and as I was taught “love is the most important commandment” given and forgive so you may be forgiven. There are many criminals that should stay in jail but the system needs to be changed and reformed. It upsets me that there are still so many people that don’t see this as being a problem. Normally I would not comment publicly on another persons post but, I’m also not naming that person. But you need to look at the numbers and the reasons why and that these are great gracious and wonderful people needed in their family’s lives, that are put away for years (For what should have been expunged or a misdemeanor crime with non inflated) bail. God bless this man and his work. And god bless ❤️🙏

No one talks about how many lives were saved due to the 94 crime bill. No one talks about how many black men and women changed their lives around after getting out and how many of them as youngsters turned away from a life of crime. We should be AGAINST crime and FOR pushing solutions to the issues that make blacks the biggest offenders (percentage wise) of crime in the US.

Im sorry but police being on campus or metal detectors have zero effect on children getting a good education. They arent like literally standing in the classroom breathing on their neck all day. But yup FJB

Harlem is "reformed" because of gentrification. You can't systemically disenfranchise a group of people and over police them when they struggle to survive. Racist much?

When you say childeren need more resources as in housing, health care, good paying jobs. That sounds like a personal problem. As in the family should be providing health care and housing and they themselves should be getting the education to have a high paying job. How exactly is getting the gov more involved going to do these things for them? Isn't it the parents job at the end of the day?
