    Ok, I will admit it; Shearer 1992-97 was magical. After that he was still good, but injuries and hip surgery wrecked his pace, so he was no longer world class as he was for his entire Blackburn career and first year at Newcastle United.

      @Athelstan Edwardson Gazza has to take the blame for his injuries. He got one by two footed jumping into a Nottingham Forest player's shin, then he got into a nightclub fight and reinjured it so he was out for 15 months.
      Another time he lunged at a player in a game for Lazio and damaged his leg.
      He was a loose cannon sadly, if only Alex Ferguson had got hold of him.

      @Aerojet01 Gascoigne had well known substance abuse problems which seemed to prevent him from making better decisions in other areas of his life
      If he was just a goofy character and didn't have the substance abuse problems and stayed fit then we would have had an all time legend and maybe the best England player of all time

      He looked fine in the 1998 World Cup and continued to be a solid, productive player all the way up until retirement
      At his best he was unquestionably one of the elite strikers in the world
      I'd rather have his career than Rooney's

    Teddy Sheringham was 28 here, which makes me wonder why he wasn't picked before. As for the US - they never even seemed to bother in this match, why did they even turn up?

    Great team when we had great players but sadly Graham Taylor's tactics made England missed out of the 1994 world cup it's a shame Terry Venables didn't take over sooner (straight after Bobby Robson)

      We had enough good players to qualify for 94 & go at least to QF. Terrible manager.

    • @roberthowell6639
      @roberthowell6639 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree Taylor was out of his depth, but he also didn't get much luck in that 94 WCQ campaign ... If you ever see some of those games back, they actually play REALLY well against Norway and Holland at Wembley, but only get draws from both games (I think Norway steal an equaliser with a screamer into the top corner out of nothing when England should be out of sight) ... They also famously get stiffed by the referee in Holland (where they also hit the post and have one off the line) Any kind of luck in just one of those games, we probably qualify and history remembers Graham Taylor a little more kindly ... Also, if I remember rightly, I think he only had Shearer and Gascoigne available for 2 or those 10 qualifying games ... You are right though, he didn't help himself either by discarding some quality older players too early, like Beardsley and Waddle (who were both arguably playing some of their best ever football at that time) and picking jobbing runners like Carlton Palmer and Andy Sinton.

      @@roberthowell6639 the team should and could have played better even in the Euro 92 his tactics left some of our best players frustrated the likes.of Lineker

    • @roberthowell6639
      @roberthowell6639 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@michaelclements4643 Totally agree with you. Like I said before, he discarded a lot of older creative players like Beardsley and Waddle too early. With no Gascoigne either - the Euro 92 squad must be one of the least creative that England have ever sent to a tournament ... The point I was making before was that he didn't have much luck either tho for WC 94 with loss of best players, bad refs, unlucky breaks in games etc. The only really crap performance in WC94 qualifying was away in Norway. They were actually alright in the other games - but even when they played well, they still didn't win! (Bit like what happens to a relegated team in the league. Nobody's crap for all 38/46 games in a season) Don't get me wrong, we would have probably been shit in the finals anyway. Taylor would probably have picked jobbers, got his tactics wrong and we'd have gone out with a whimper in the last 16 or something. But with even just a bit of luck, we would have at least qualified for the USA.

    England always came unstuck against the USA since the early 90’s (1993). Only 4 matches England dominated the USA who aren’t that good in football.
    6-3 08/06/53 away
    8-1 28/05/59 away
    10-0 27/05/64 away
    5-0 16/06/85 away
    England never got more than 3 goal at home in friendlies or on a neutral soil in world cups.
