'January 6th was President Trump’s fault': Cassidy Hutchinson tells Nicolle Wallace

  • Cassidy Hutchinson, former White House aide and star witness in the January 6th Committee hearings, describes the chaos inside the Trump White House and the former president’s mob-like approach to loyalty. “Trump is a dangerous man and he demands a code of loyalty that isn’t normal.” Hutchinson lays the blame squarely on Trump and his enablers including Speaker Kevin McCarthy who, Hutchinson says, “spoke out after January 6th” but quickly “fell back to Donald Trump.”

To act as though he is the same as Trump, however is to deny reality.
Trump is pathological - a child who never matured. He is self-centered as only a small child can be. His personna is an act. Inauthentic because as a child he has no concept of empathy and responsibility. Like the pre-schooler
Trump actually is, Donald is ruled by emotion. He acts out and lives in the moment with no thought of consequences.
Biden is adult. He has spent his adult life in public service and has experience in working across the aisle, in getting legislation passed and in foreign relations. He knows our allies and our enemies.
He and his team took over a rudderless executive branch reeling with dysfunction yet they have gotten real (and beneficial) legislation passed. Everytime this 'sleepy old man' has tangled with the House Freedom Caucus he has cleaned their clock.
Other than an unneeded tax break for the rich, Trump & his staff passed ZERO legislation of consequence.
Biden is an honorable man. Trump is dishonorable and pathetic - a poorly educated little boy running around in a grownup costume, play acting his misunderstanding of Manhood.
DJT is "all hat, no cattle." Joe Biden is authentic - and wise in his decades of being a grown man - something of which Trump is incapable.

The world did. We watched, in astonishment, as he was declared the winner. We've known what Trump was for decades. He could silence his critics in the U.S., but he couldn't silence the world. For 4 years we feared what he might do, start a war, betray secrets. His handling of the Covid pandemic was nothing short of shocking. His crazed ideas for stopping the dangerous virus, such as using bleach, shining lights inside bodies, or stating that it would disappear in 15 days, were played on our screens daily. Whilst we managed a lockdown and wearing masks, he fought them. By comparison, out deaths per capita were significantly lower than those in the U.S. We had working remotely up and running within days. We had an app available immediately. When the Vaccine arrived, the uptake was amazing. We celebrated. As the 2nd vaccine was rolled out, offices opened up. I never once saw anybody argue about mask wearing. In a sense, we became kinder to one another.

I was raised in a conservative Republican household. I've watched the party deteriorate consistently for more than 3 decades (I'm 46). Conservatism and republican ideals work for those at the top, and only those at the top.
I believe Trump was Republicans "jumping the shark" and I hope and pray that the Republican party never recovers from their partnership with a life-long grifter.

I need to read this book, because I need to know what Ms. Hutchinson felt when children were being thrown in cages and babies were being torn from mother's arms? Or when Trump gave that "both sides" in Charlottesville. Or when 45 was playing down Covid. Did any of that register with her? I applaud her for coming forward in the end, but it remains unclear if she testified because she was compelled by circumstance or if in fact she is heroic because she stood up for the rule of law and the Constitution.

How about just expecting everyone to make adult decisions from a place of conscience and character? Why do we make heroes out of people who were contributors to the evils that are done just because there was a point when they realized that their complicity had crossed moral and ethical lines long ago?

I was a Republican long ago (Ronald Reagan and George Herbert Walker Bush) and joined the U.S. Navy, but they lost me when George H. W. Bush refused to admit we were in a recession, as all my friends were losing their jobs, then (at about her age) I did a reflection of my own and changed parties. You're right, the Republican party has diluted its brand by allowing the Patriot Party to infect it about two decades or so ago, then the MAGA thing ruined their recovery from that. You didn't actually say that, sorry for putting words in your mouth, but I kinda think that was sort of where you were going. Thank you Nicolle for saying what needed to be said. Yes, Cassidy is a courageous woman and her efforts should without a doubt be celebrated, but your point that you would have never supported him in the first place because he has always shown us who he is, should not be forgotten. Republicans, including Cassidy, stuck by this man throughout his term and all his horrific actions. She said, "the Republican Party should not be defined by Trump", but I get the feeling this is not the last time that blaming Trump will be used to avoid talking about their own inaction. We should hold people accountable for their complicity, but we also can't ignore those who turned a blind eye. I'm happy Cassidy now sees what a horrible person Trump is, but she talks about the Republican Party as though it is held captive and not complicit. I will buy her book, but I really hope that there were moments long before Jan 6th that gave her pause. If not, maybe she is not a voice we should be listening to beyond this moment.
