- Being able to navigate through the backcountry is an essential skill if you're going to be spending time off the beaten path. Here, we'll talk a little about why map & compass skills are still important to master. We'll then orient our map, take a few bearings, and triangulate our current position. This is the first in a two part episode.

Good video instruction. The concepts clearly & correctly explained, and done with good camera work. Your emphasis on awareness of your surroundings shouldn't be overlooked. It's the same advice highlighted by author Kevin Walker, who wrote in his books about navigation: knowing how to read & correctly interpret the topographic map is 90% of effective navigation, knowing how to use the compass 6% & correct estimate distance walked 4%.

How do you practice it? Get a map to a local area and try the things he said in the Video?
When you orient a map all you do is line up the magnetic needle ITSELF, (north end of course) with any map north line whether map border, vertical grid line etc. That's it. You don't have to do anything with the dial. (and in this case it's adjusted for declination).
I watched another video about navigating with a compass and it was totally different. Now I'm really confused!

Jim Bond it is a clinometer - it allows you to measure the slope of terrain features.

Use google to find the declination. If you have a compass that has a declination adjustment use it. If not you need to manually compensate by the amount of degrees everytime you take a reading.
Thanks for the great lesson! I just have one question: when adjusting for declination, do you adjust opposite to what a map says to find true north? For example, if a map says the location I'm in has a declination of 14 degrees to the east, would I adjust 14 degrees to the west to make up for the declination? Or is the map telling me exactly what I need to adjust to (that being 14 east)? Thanks in advance for your time and help!
You adjust the compass 14° to the East....as in, you lay it down with North facing generally North...the Easterly declination adjustment will turn the face to the right (clockwise), toward the East.
If you are West of the Agonic Line, you will be adjusting Easterly. If you are East of the line, you'll adjust Westerly.
Pause the video at 3:37. You can see the declination scale on the inside face of the compass. Its labels are both E Decl and W Decl...you turn it so you get the declination from the map or an updated degree for the area....If the Map says 8° East, you adjust toward the E Decl.

you should use the mirror to take your bearing,,, opps, guess you didn't read the instructions, so many suppose experts trying to tell how to use a compass without reading the instructions
