I love them both but their fans are so disrespectful for other Eponines. It’s hard to explain to them that Frances Ruffelle for example is very important in creating Eponine for the musical.
By any measurement, this is the best personification of this song. Others do not come close. The melodic change in the passage "All my life, I've only been pretending" is ingenious. Whether it was written or she Ad-libbed it, it completely blew me away. That little passage has always bothered me in the original score. This fixes it beautifully.
I come to this version and it completely blows me away every single time. That final chorus is perfection, that voice is so strong yet vulnerable, controlled yet still chock with character and imperfection. The “I love him” channels such a classical tone, it sounds like she’s singing from her head and her gut, she’s wanting it to sound timeless and operatic yet still a tiny little rasp and humanity to it. Then the “pretending” is simply sensational… she is slowly building to it and making us wait so that when she hits it she goes and uses all her power to blow us away. It’s perfect in the storytelling sense too as it shows the gradual realisation in her character, it’s all building to this grand conclusion in her mind as she finally comes to see that everything in her life that makes her happy is simply a dream, there’s this gut-wrenching tragedy in that moment but also the way she is owning it and shouting that realisation to the heavens it’s as if she is making every bit of that pain her power, she turns it into her super strength. It’s how she’s survived. There is pain in it, but she’s also in a way congratulating herself on what she’s survived. Yes it’s tragic, but she’s owning that power. That power to have love and hope in the darkest times… no matter how tragic that is… it’s like she see the light in that… in this moment… that’s her greatness, her power and her purpose finally realised. Great version!
I love linzie very classy and so soft and tender. Very fine acting and great singing style. If she is Eponine in real life, Marius will find her irresistible.
Absolutely love this version Linzi has this intensity and emotional capability that she is able to portray so much without prancing around the stage and making this song too "poppy" In the second half of the song her tone changes and it's pitch perfect- she's both depressed and angered with herself and Marius I honesty love how she can portray that so well without over doing the song like many others. I love Eponine's who use the hat as a prop or do gestures as well but to see the same intensity without all that is just astounding. Every note and emotion is pitch perfect and amazing One of my favorites.

I saw this clip on one of those Channel 4 '100 Greatest Shows', the musicals one. It made me fall in love with Les Mis and Linzi remains one of my all time favourite Eponines because of that. I still feel how I felt when I first heard/saw it every time I watch this. Amazing. So grateful that I got introduced to Les Mis (and Linzi's voice)!
What a revelation. I can't believe it's taken me this long to find this beautiful piece of history. I'm conscious that this was shot when Les Mis was still fresh, bold and staggering, before the casting became templated, and the production elements reduced to bare bones tourist fodder. My heart pines.
Kaho Shimada does that high note on the official Complete Symphonic Recording from 1988. Linzi may have originated it, not sure, but Shimada definitely did it as early as 1988.

I unfortunately have re entered a circa mid 90s high school les Miz listening to obsession again, and I was recalling this program I had on VHS (now prob in a dump somewhere for 20 yrs now) back in 1991/92 and I remember I wore out this section of it and the other full performance numbers sections of the video. Yes, Lea is undoubtedly a technically brilliant singer, and in Miss Saigon she is unsurpassed in my opinion. But I love this performance by Linzi, she was the first person I saw in this role and I love her innocence and naturalness in this song. Perfect.
I love that the first two reasons why you like her are 'she can project, and sing in tune'. That's a pretty base requirement for someone in a West End show, to be honest. Her voice is lovely though.

The acting: She won a Tony, Olivier, Critics Circle, Drama Desk, and Theatre World Award all in one season. Only a handful of people have achieved this feat. So to answer your comment, her top-notch vocal technique plus her awards winning acting performance would make a great Eponine (if you look across many mediums in the internet and out, this is commonly agreed to by many people)

Even her performances as Fantine and Kim in "Miss Saigon". She really has this uniqueness as a performer.

Its a major setback from the Musical Directors. Just a note, thou I love all Les Mis singers and productions.
