Had this problem with an old really worn down yamaha ytr-282 I bought dirt cheap. It had ugly patch work on the lead pipe. REALLY stuck slides and exactly this problem with the valves. The nickel plating was worn and scratched up so much that you could see the brass underneath. Ended up just stripping it for parts and soldered the remains into a Bflat bugle. Just to practice my soldering
Have you ever had a trumpet that plays tight even in the middle range? If do, Did you make adjustments that corrected and allowed it to play freer with intervals not do wide sldo
Hey I need some help trying to figure out what’s wrong with my trumpet. When I played an Ab, I noticed a really loud vibrating sound which I could also feel. Someone else heard it and they asked someone else for help. An advanced player played my trumpet with their mouthpiece and found out that low C# was also making the loud vibrating. We looked at all of the valves and they looked okay. They were well oiled as well, and weren’t sticky at all. So we just moved on and practiced our music piece, but during it I noticed note E also had the vibrating but it was more noticeable with the lower notes. Someone told me that it was probably the middle valve that was messed up and I should ask the teacher on Monday when he comes back. But I want to find out now so I can practice the chromatic scale over the weekend.. because that’s due Monday...
Usually a buzz is because of a loose screw or slide. Check all of the screws (lyre screw, 3rd slide stopper screw, top valve caps, bottom valve caps, or any other screws). If this does not solve the problem, check to see if a slide is loose. Play all of the notes chromatically very slowly and hold onto a valve slide while you are playing. Do this with all of the slides one at a time. If the vibrating stops when you are holding one of the slides, that is most likely what is causing the problem. There are other things it could be, but these are the most likely. Let me know what happens. Art
6:50 Apparently Anderson Silver Plating no longer offers valve job service. Their technician retired, so they felt they could not maintain their quality.
Wow you cleaned up that valve so well. Too bad it didn't fix the problem. My monel valves have a bit of discoloration and occasionally stick when I push them down at an angle. I was thinking about giving the valves a soak in vinegar to see if that would clean them off and improve performance. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!
You can try it. It may work if the problem is because of junk on the valves. There are many other things that can cause this problem, but you will not hurt anything with vinegar.
Some professional level instruments are made with Stainless steel valves (particularly in the larger brass instruments), is there any reason why you feel it is an inferior material?
I do not know the answer to that question. I was not aware that there were pro instruments with stainless steel valves. I will have to do some research on this and I may need to make some changes to the video.
The Brass and Woodwind Shop take a look at Besson sovereign and prestige euphoniums. They have stainless steel valves. I was under the impression they were superior to monel, but harder to manufacture. But that’s possibly what their marketing department want you to think.
The number 2 valve on my mellophone is sticking. When I put another valve into the cylinder, it works fine. The number 2 valve has some scoring on the side. Would it be possible to lightly sand it, say, with 800 or higher paper?
Please call out these sorry trumpet brands. I keep seeing them in my band hall because, "HEY! A $120 Trumpet on Amazon for my beginner! Sounds like a bargain!" Please call them out so I can reference you to my parents!
Well presented Art as always, well done x
Highly entertaining as educational video.

Thank you for sharing. Very helpful. What did you use to clean the one valve of all the discoloration?

man, the sound it made when unscrewing the valve was way too familiar. It's like a hallmark of these lower quality instruments!
Can ya do a vid on valve lapping

One day man will build telescopes that can see atoms
I thought stainless steel valves are used in a lot of horns that even cost above $1500
I made a mistake when I made the video. I should have said "Steel valves", not "Stainless steel valves".

I think so.
