  • Assembling the Planetary Freecoaster without a hub shell in an attempt to understand how it works!
    This hub could change BMX freecoaster hubs FOREVER!
    The internals of the Planetary Freecoaster from Free Night are similar to hubs weve seen before, but have one giant difference; planetary gearing.
    This allows the hub to be a cassette when moving forward, then immediately go into freecoaster mode with NO disengagement.
    This is completely unlike and other freecoaster hub available.

    Cool man, good video! Just one comment - I prefer to insert the inner spacer into the clutch parts and join them together before sliding it on the axle.

    @Brant_Moore When the pawls are engaged (pressed outward) by the 'triangle thingy', how are they able to then be pressed down (towards the axle) as each of the teeth in the hub shell pass over them? Isn't the 'triangle thingy' still under the pawls, lifting them up? That's the only question I had that didn't get answered. Great explaination and breakdown! 🤘

    • @Brant_Moore
      @Brant_Moore  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As soon as the wheel starts turning the other way the triangle/cam (just learned that name for it) rotates the opposite direction and the pawls fall

    • @zenofthemoment
      @zenofthemoment 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Brant_Moore I may not have described it well. When you're rolling forward, the cam is engaging the pawls, and you're 'cassetting'. The pawls are being lifted by the cam, but also riding over and snapping into the teeth in the hub shell. How do they move over the teeth in the hub shell if they are also being held out by the cam? I'd think the pawls wouldn't be able to move with the cam underneath them.
      Appreciate the response! 🤘

      I watched some videos on how planetary gears work but the most helpful was just a simple animation of what happens when certain parts get stopped and then relating those to parts of the hub in my head. The video I saw that was just the simple animation was just called "Planetary Gear Set" on the channel
      PelletierPhysics. I think I get it now.

      as every other freecoaster works, it's friction. there is a part in every coaster that uses friction to find the difference between coasting with the pedal flat and engaging with the pedals moving.
      you can feel this by just coasting and pedaling forward and backwards without really putting pressure. you will feel the moment it engages when you pressure forwards goes above the pressure the friction device does.
      in "normal" freecoasters this friction is done by springs (either a spring around a axle, or springs pushing balls against the shell, or springs pushing something else against the shell)
      in this one they use a planetary gear set against what i assume will be a slip ring.
      a freecoaster "brakes" when this friction thing doesn't have enough friction anymore thus becoming unreliable.
      this is a very cool design, but i just wonder how long the slip ring will keep doing his work.
      the main good thing about this design is that there is no sideways force inside the coaster. that is where most coasters brake fro landing a hard fakie and engaging. the clutch pushes sideways in the shell and something has to give.
      even with this being a total different design, it goes back to the idea of the KHE rolex freecoaster. that thing was very good, until they put it in production and can't get the tolerance stuff like this needs.
      if they could make this with a 20mm hollow axle and 14mm bolds they could have a winner. this would also means they have to use a bigger shell. i also think it would be good to use thin longer gears for the planetary system, and thus a wider slip ring.
      for your info, i've never seen this, so this is just based on my speculations of how i think it works.

    Believe it or not the hollow axel is stronger than a solid axel that's why bones are hollow it makes them stronger

    Why not use a solid axle with just the end hallowed out just enough for a Allen wrench to fit? Or just a solid axle with a hole through it at the end so you can put a tool through it to either tighten or loosen your jam nut.
