    Hey y'all, in today's video I'm talking about the very complicated world of teen influencing and being a teenager on social media consuming this influencing. I share just some of my thoughts and experiences and this video is in no way meant to be exhaustive.

    Thank you for not treating teenagers like thoughtless and impulsive brats. When I was a teenager, I constantly heard people talking about how stupid teenagers are, and it really impacted my self esteem for the worst. I still feel the effects to this day. Young people are just that-- people who are young and doing their best. I appreciate that you've offered guidance in this video rather than condescension!

      This. My parents started saying stuff like, "ugh, she's turning into a teenager" when I was nine. The level of cruelty with which some people feel comfortable to treat adolescence is nuts.

      @Sweet_Dee 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      That's true. Being a teenager is hard enough without adults dog piling on you for what, existing at your current age? I too remember a lot of being talked down to like a little kid, but also being held to adult standards whenever that was convenient. Teenagers are just... inexperienced humans trying to navigate the world. Mostly they just need guidance, compassion, and the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them.

    • @bandanarathore
      @bandanarathore 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Being a teacher I totally feel this. Teenagers are not thoughtless persons, they are very impressionable. What is going around affects them alot. They need a positive environment that makes them into critical thinkers and they get to make mistakes along the way. People forget they once were teenagers too and become cruel to their own past selves too.

      thank you so much for saying this! I think you hit on a common experience and perhaps why teenagers feel so misunderstood. I know I got a lot of "you'll understand when you're older." Sure, teens might not be able to see everything, but that's also true of adults!! You're right that they're doing the best they can

    I am no longer a teenager but dorm shopping when I was 18 definitely turned the shopping switch on and I’ve spent the past several years since I turned 20 learning how to moderate it again. I just started my first budget this month and I am very proud of myself for setting aside money for a concert, going in knowing what I wanted, and buying those things. And I was even under budget. I’ve struggled with budgeting and planning for things in the past and I am finally getting to a place where I can do that. 18 year old me wouldn’t have been able to do that, no matter how much I analyzed the surface of the issue, there were deeper problems at play and I wasn’t ready to address them.

      I can relate! If I had had a credit card at 18, 19, 20 years old, before I got diagnosed and properly treated for bipolar disorder, I'm confident that I would be in deep, deep debt now. I would recklessly spend during episodes, but I could only blow through whatever money I actually had. People clowned me for not building credit, but I didn't trust myself with a credit card, full stop. Plot twist: it took years, but I got the help I needed, sorted out my personal finances, and I'm actually an accountant now 😂
      Sounds like you looked within yourself and took care of the things you needed to too. That's awesome! You should feel so proud of yourself. 🥰 Coming in under budget is a super exciting accomplishment as well.

      @shawnaripari  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      congratulations!! This is a huge win and I'm so proud of you!! You definitely hit the nail on the head, that shopping is quite often not about the stuff. I also wasn't ready to confront things when I was younger and so I relate a lot to your post.

    Part of the issue genuinely is that the frontal lobe is not fully developed. That's a big part of the not considering ramifications of tanning and it's a big part of not considering the ramifications of overspending.

    As a gen z I feel part of the problem with internet safety is the poor quality of the education provided. The internet safety lessons I got were so outdated. They focused on chat rooms, I think instagram featured once, some resources were from more than a decade prior. It was so out of touch from the reality we were living in, so why would we listen?

    I have a no buy win to share! I recently took up crocheting, and a problem I’ve been having is my yarn ball moving around as I work. They make yarn spinners to help with that, and I’ve been eyeing one up on Amazon. However, it’s not a complicated device, so I figured there must be a way to make one myself. Sure enough, I looked it up and found a free 3D print file, so I’m printing my own!😅

    • @Reaganreads
      @Reaganreads 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, the file I found I think will work even better than the one I was going to buy because you had to take that one apart to put your yarn on it. Whereas, I can just plunk the yarn on the 3d printed one without tampering!

    • @sunnystitcher5400

    i’m a teen who’s been watching you for a long time and now i have a reason to comment! i really don’t know how i feel about teens being online. on one hand i think we have valuable things to share and deserve to share them but on the other hand me personally (and probably most teenagers) are absolute train wrecks and i can only see an online presence making life harder. i also want to add that i think that the audience of teen influencers are probably younger than them, like 11-14. i personally find adults more aspirational than other teens so i don’t really watch their content. i suspect that the people aspiring to be like teenagers are middle schoolers which is even more concerning. anyway i love your content and i think you did a great job tackling this topic!

    • @geniej2378
      @geniej2378 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I think you’re right about teens having an even younger audience. Being a teen online is ok, but being an influencer is a full time job and likely negatively impacting some other aspect of the teen influencers life.

Pre-orders for them are about to drop later this month/early September. Ngl I'm always tempted but I really really do not need them (and they're so expensive!). I've pre-ordered an advent calendar for the first time. It was a big item I gave consideration to for a few weeks. It's an embroidery one from a small business (owner and 2 part time employees), £100 and I do have a lot of embroidery supplies already but it is my main hobby and I trust the owners taste.
      The £100 beauty advent calenders where you have no guarantee of colours, shades, scents, brands or formulas I really don't get at all - it seems more about status of having a big fancy advent calender

    PSA for anyone thinking of going without sunscreen: a family member died a horrible death from complications of skin cancer they didn't get treated quite as soon as they should, just because it didn't seem like skin cancer at first. It was entirely caused by sun exposure with no sunscreen.

    The edited part is probably the most important to read....
    Im happy my parents didnt give in to my every teenage desire, something that changed with the wind. Imo, i feel the parents are vicariously living through their kids who are involved with social media like this.
    To add... The internet is not any safer now, its juat that people have grown more familiar with it due to the increase and push of social media. There are still plenty of shady places that are very easy to get to. Parents needs to continue to be parents and not act like they are their child's friend. I've been an adult for as long as many of these girls have been alive, at least, and my mom and i just crossed the threshold of "my mom is my friend" now. But she hasnt stopped being a parent and someone I now go to for advice or a shoulder to cry on (over the phone). She may tell me "you gotta go live the life you want" but she will still tell me if she feels something isn't safe for me. Not the "i dont like that" complaints like my tattoos and piercings, but "your new friend seems to be tearing you down" or "honey please rest on your days off work. Youre alwaya giving to others and not yourself enough".

    I really appreciate your measured, objective approach to this topic. Please don't doubt your content work is needed. I will not allow my sons to use social media and though it may sound paradoxical, I will use videos like the ones you make to explain to them my decision. My concerns are for their mental health, self esteem, and long term financial health, considering how subtle yet highly effective marketing via influencers really is. These conversations are important as it is the only way to prevent normalization of haul culture for the next generation.

I use another brand along with a Nigerian made net sponge. So the body scrub doesn't get used more than 2 times a week. But who needs a retail display's worth of it? NO ONE

    I would love Shawna’s perspective on college stuff. Because she could talk from her own experiences and then with her current perspective on things. It’s two fold because it’s the first time you’re on your own, but you still have supports. It’s also something that is heavily influenced on social media, despite trying to avoid it I’ve gotten a lot as a first time freshman, fresh out of high school. And having Shawna from the videos in a “is this a gimmick or real advice/how much waste would you create over four years”
