His decline really was swift - 1994-95 was a poor season, 1995-96 was awful and by 1996-97 he was all but gone. He did enter the Q-School in the summer of 1997, but lost his first match 5-1 to Neil Mosley - making a highest break of 23 - and was either attacked that evening after being escorted out of the qualifying venue, or more likely, got so drunk he fell down the stairs of a local nightclub and broke a few ribs. (He was escorted out of the snooker venue for being an arsehole, but what happened after isn't clear; he claimed attack, everyone else thought self-inflicted). The enigma of Alex though is clear in a copy of Snooker Scene I was reading the other day, from 2003 - he'd entered an unofficial Irish Championship, lost 5-1 to a fifteen-year-old Darren Dornan, again with a high break of 23...but then played an exhibition with Joe Swail in the same arena, immediately after the match, where he made a 90-odd and should've potted an easy black for the ton! I can only think he suffered in the same way the Whirlwind does now: decent in practice, can't bring it to the match table under pressure. Dornan, as it happens, is the current Northern Ireland Amateur Champion!
Your sure that was Darren Morgan and not Steve Davis that was a fantastic performance I thought Darren Morgan was supposed to only be an average player 😮

No matter...like alcohol hand sanitiser!👍🏻 he was a genuine genius didn't help himself but wasn't treated well by the establishment. Steve Davis said he put the only genius he ever played in the hands of Alex Higgins.
