  • Freediving for Crayfish at night! I go on a Solo adventure up some remote coastline here in New Zealand and find an awesome beach to camp on for the night. I go Spearfishing and spear a fish for dinner, making some nice fish wraps for dinner then go for a Solo Freedive at night where I encounter huge amounts of Crayfish (Spiny Red Rock Lobster) and find Snapper asleep and all sorts of amazing sea life in the Dark Ocean!

    hey mate for future can cut the leather jacket vertically between the head and the fin spike and essentially pull the head and guts out. then pull the skin off like a banana. Sounds weird but you get so much more meat off it. Apologies if you were just filleting it like that for preference. thanks for the vid!

      only way to do it then fillet them if you like

      I was just about to add that tip in the comments . When I first got in to spear fishing as a young boy we wood harvest quite a few jackets. My favourite ones to eat are the round ones we call them dinner plate leather jacket .

Then u can knock the sides off like normal without ruining your knife. They look like the Tigger fish we have here they are my favorite fish to eat

    I’ve speared leatherjackets when no snappers were around and needed dinner. I found if you cut from the horn down towards the spine, you can then rip the head off and guts all together. This exposes the skin off the flesh so grab the skin nice and firm and peel it off. It makes a sound like you’re ripping paper but all good easier than using a nice 🤙

      Many years ago I bought a 10"/3.2m sailing dinghy in Paeroa and sailed it down the river to Thames fitted it out and spent the next month sailing up to the top of the Coromandel.
      Catching two snapper each day for food, pulling the boat up onto the beach, pitching my tent and lighting a fire.
      Then I sailed over to Great Barrier and spent another month sailing the coast over there.
      Every now and then when it was just right and pitch black I would swim about 10 minutes out to sea and just float completely still looking up at the stars.
      Truly amazing!

    I've did about 15 night dives all around whangarei/matapouri area scuba diving. Its the best kind of diving ive EVER experienced. Ive did about 12 wreck dives on the Waikato in tutukaka and also the Tui in matapouri. Have been to Poor knights a few times but ive seen so many tank sized crayfish at night time sitting far back in holes under massive boulders. One night I almost wasted air just looking at what was around I was so amazed. Not to mention the first time experiencing Bioluminesence in the water from the torch lighting up the water was amazing. Next time try shining your torch around in front of you in the water for a minute then turn it off and stir the water up in front of you with your hand. I miss night dives💯

    Gday bro. Leather jacket, hold them upright like they'd swim. Put your knife just behind the barb and cut down til you hit gut cavity. Pull apart and it's an all in one type thing. You can then just pull the skin off and you have the nice flesh on the frame

  • @russianbotstein1422
    @russianbotstein1422 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Always remove the head and guts from leather jacket as soon as you catch it. Out the knife behind the spike on the head, cut down until you get through the backbone and rip the head off. The guts will come out with it.
    I suggest flour, eggwash, panco crumb then shallow fry

  • @youzhou2946

    Treat the leather like a Gurnard bro. Small cut just before the dorsal then snap the head forward and skin and gut it all in one move.
