    I remember being 7 years old and watching the first episode of Mythbusters, they asked for viewer submitting and after begging my mom to help me submit a possible myth to the Mythbusters (at the time my favorite show and still holds a close place in my heart).... my question came from the first Harry Potter movie where Hagrid bends Harry's uncle's shotgun barrel 90° upward.... I was so curious to see what would happen.... so glad they eventually tested it.

    During WWII some Stg-44s were equipped with 45 and 90 degree bends. 90 degree barrels where mounted in some German tanks to shoot soviets off the top of them or close range fire.

      The Germans made for Tank destroyer crews because on the Elephant they forgot to put a Bow machine gun on it. They made them in 45 and 90 degree variants. The 90 degree was more popular, but because of the extra rifling and time in the barrel it would cause the bullet to heat up really bad and the bullet would shatter, it resulted in a shotgun effect. Which didn't matter because they were shooting at Russians climbing there Tank trying to pour gasoline down the tank destroyers hatches and then light the thing on fire.

    Didn't the Germans in ww2 invent a curved gun like this?

      Ya the krummlauf.

    • @nathanapplegate5374
      @nathanapplegate5374 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1810

      Ja, but by accident. It was used primarily in the tank battles of the Eastern German front. Germany made the mistake of not putting a machine gun on top of their Tiger tanks. The Soviets exploited this and started climbing on top of the Tiger tanks to destroy them. The Germans remedied this by using their curved guns. These guns were so made that the bullet, upon the curve, would shatter. This gave the gun a shotgun effect, making it perfect for keeping those pesky Soviet soldiers off the tanks.

      Nathan Applegate Minor Correction; it was actually the Ferdinand Tank Destroyer, which used the otherwise usless chassis of the Tiger prototype build by Porsche, repurposed for Tank Destroyers and Self-Propelled Guns when Henschel won the Contract for the Tiger which we know today.
      Though eventually the Ferdinand was upgraded to the Elefant Tank Destroyer, which did little else but add the missing Coaxial MG.

    This would work much better with a smooth bore musket and round ball ammunition. No wonder the bullet tumbles, it's being formed to the contour of the barrel, which is curved. It's probably getting a lot of material stripped off the bullet by the rifling while having to make a hard turn, as well.

      @gundamnduke0 9 ปีที่แล้ว +87

      +Tombs Clawtooth and many instances, it shatters the bullet, making it fire like a shotgun. It was a good thing for close quarter though, so the Germans didn't complain.

      Yeah that would definitely be pretty damn hard with a muzzleloader, though in theory you could also do this with a breechloader that just has a smooth barrel and a cartridge with a ball-shaped bullet. Might take a bit more effort, but it would be more likely to be successful I think.

    1:20 It doesn't care. There's no threshold; the bullet doesn't "remember" its original trajectory and go "oh wait, now I'm going backwards". Energy is lost as the bullet is forced to turn. That's it. If you go down a corkscrew water slide, there's not sense of suddenly reversing course; all you recognize is turning. I thought these guys were _at least_ this smart.

    These things were used it ww2 to discourage anyone trying to climb on a armored vehicle. Not much point in a tank if you have to stick your head out to shoot someone, so they had these bent assault rifle attachments that you could stick out from a viewing port and possibly hit someone crawling around on top of the tank or at least get them to jump off.

    • @Gameprojordan
      @Gameprojordan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, this was meant for point blank range so keyholing bullets and such weren't that big of a deal. It was still an unpractical design though and the barrels life plummeted to a couple hundred rounds at most before catastrophic failure

    • @Lonewolf6565
      @Lonewolf6565 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is any curve in the barrel will deform the bullet and make it impossible to fly straight. Curved rifle barrels were actually experimented with during ww2 and found to be virtually useless after only a few rounds.

  • @Earthenfist
    @Earthenfist 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It seems to me that this could be made more effective with specialized ammo- if you had a round bullet instead of a tapered one, the tumble wouldn't affect the penetration as much. Though you might end up getting curving bullets with the spin.

    The Krummlauf was a barrel accessory used for the German STG-44 assault rifle at the end of World War II. It was meant to be used as a means to shoot around corners, and shoot from the relative safety of the inside of a tank to fend off enemies who had clambered on. The Krummlauf had a few different variants for different angles of fire, including a 90 degree angle. It even had a periscope system to accurately aim.

    The issue with the wobbling is due to the rifling in the barrel being crushed together on one side. You have more pressure on the left side of the gun, putting spin on the bullet, than you do on the right.

    The U.S. Had a curved gismo to go on the M3 SMG. It used solid copper round ball .45 ammo. It was meant for a tank crewman to fire from inside the tank at enemy on the tank. And for tank destroyer troops to use on enemy tanks finish off the crews of knocked out enemy tanks. Hand grenade works just as well or better.

    Kind of wanna try this with a smooth-bored black powder musket... because the projectile is already round, and doesn’t have to spin like a football, therefore it’s not as likely to deform in the same way the .22 rounds did in this test...

    The Germans tried this in world war 2. It does work but the problem is the bullets speed ends up wearing the rifling of the barrel during it's turn to a point where it ends up breaking the gun after a bit of shooting. Should work for a few rounds though overall 3/10 would not recommend.

    Fun fact during world war 2 the allies and axis experimented with 90 degree and 45 degree bent barrels to shoot around corners but they didn’t make a lot of them because the barrel need to be replaced a lot and was very unneeded because a regular gun would be much easier to use and less costly

The USSR was by no means a fun place, but the Nazis tortured and murdered children and the disabled, and everyone in Germany let it happen because of nationalism. Nazi leaders turned eugenics into patriotism, and that should never be excused, nor should the people who reported their neighbors to be sent to their deaths.

      .22LR is actually just as deadly as any other. if you think it will "barely" kill on someone's temple, then you know nothing about guns. plus their are LOTS of different kinds of .22. some doing 4000 feet per second. keep in mind that the 223 used in 90% of AR platforms is just .001 larger than a .22

    • @takomerp
      @takomerp 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I said .22LR, not .223. And yes, a massacre in finland was commited with a .22LR. I'm just saying it's severely underpowered, and that you wouldn't call a sharp stick or a pencil "lethal", even if its wounding potential is probably more or same like most .22LR,

    The US army m3 submachine-gun, also called the grease gun, could be fitted with a 90-degree curved barrel. the idea was for tankers to be able to shoot enemy soldiers off their tank without exposing themselves.
    The curved barrel on an m3, of course, is much shorter than whatever Jamie and Adam were using.

    Regarding the bullet tumbling, this can be attributed to conservation of angular momentum rather than simply from contacting the barrel wall (sort of).

    • @maxk4324
      @maxk4324 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let's assume, for simplicity, the curve is roughly a circular arc. When going around the bend, the barrel wall not only accelerates the bullet towards the arc's point of rotation, but also rotates the bullet's orientation about that point. This gives the bullet angular momentum equal to its mass times the square of the barrel's radius of curvature times the rate of rotation (in radians per second) about this point (assuming we treat it like a point mass, which is fair when comparing it's size to the much larger radius of curvature). Since the curve continues basically to the end of the barrel, it leaves the muzzle with this angular momentum, however without the barrel enforcing a point of rotation some distance away from the bullet, the point of rotation shifts to the bullet's center of mass. Treating the bullet now like a small solid rod of uniform density (since the bullet now comprises the entire system and is thus not treatable as a point mass) this means it's new angular momentum is equal to 1/12 times its mass times its the square of its length times its rate of rotation. We know the original momentum must equal the new one, we know the bullet's mass is the same, and we know that 1/12 times the square of its length is much smaller than the square of barrel's radius of curvature. So the only way angular momentum can be conserved is if the rate of rotation dramatically increases.

    • @maxk4324
      @maxk4324 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is why I said "sort of." The barrel wall does play a roll in that it imparts angular momentum, but the bullet tumble is not random as it would be if it had simply been fired out of a shitty barrel. The bullet will always leave the barrel spinning in the same direction as the barrel's curve. If conservation of momentum were ignored, the bullet should really have been spinning the other way as the barrel wall on the outside of the curve would slow that side of the bullet more than the other side as it exits due to friction.

  • @ahmadalkhateeb1180

    Wouldn't this be even better using 'rocket' propelled bullets like Gyrojet? It has low muzzle velocity, but the speed of the bullet increases over time. Apparently they also don't require a heavy barrel, so using a curved barrel that is arguably structurally weaker than a normal barrel should be less of a problem with these bullets. Also the bullets automatically gyroscopically stabilize, so they shouldn't wobble as seen in this video.

  • @Corristo89
    @Corristo89 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Germans actually had some of these during WW2 and they were quite popular with tank crews, since they could just "hose down" their tank by sticking the barrel out of the hatch without having to get out and expose themselves. The problem is that the massive friction coming from the bullet grinding itself along the side will destroy that barrel in no time. But the bend had the added benefit of breaking the bullets apart, essentially turning the assault rifle or machine pistol into a sort of automatic shotgun.
