In 1971, at the age of 39, Angeli was found dead of an accidental overdose at her home in Beverly Hills, but In a letter to a friend just before her death, Pier said “…My love died at the wheel of a Porsche. It’s now been 17 years that I’ve been lonely, desperately lonely. I want to find peace and be free and finally be with my father and Jimmy again.”
Dorothy Kilgallen also died of an overdose nine years after this episode.
Sunny von Bulow also died of an overdose. Her husband recently had conducted an extramarital affair with a former cast member of the canceled soap opera Dark Shadows. Before its cancellation, two of its other cast members, not the homewrecker, appeared as mystery guests on What’s My Line?.

Paul Winchell was such a good WML questioner that Daly gave him the honor of starting a regular round.
Winchell was the inventor of the artificial heart .
God, he won't even let her speak. He tries to answer all of the questions aimed at her.
They thought it was going to give it away because of her accent, and she spoke very limited English. She actually spoke not a single word of English when she was cast in her first film in the US, she had to have a translator for all her lines and meetings with the Studios.
She also answered his questions later in the show
Notice that when Vic talks about Pier's upcoming film, "Somebody Up There Likes Me" (1956), Pier appears to lapse into melancholy sadness. James Dean was supposed to star in that film (in fact, she had helped him rehearse for it) after his death, he was replaced by Paul Newman.

Correction: James Dean cannot be replaced. Paul was awarded the role in his absence and perhaps many other roles Jimmy would have landed. If only.

I worked with Paul Winchell's son, Stacy back in the early 70s on the ambulance in LA. He was attending UCLA med school and worked a couple of days a week. We worked in the Hollywood and West Hollywood area. He looked so much like Paul in this episode. Paul was a student in medicine too as I recall Stacy telling me. Don't know whatever became of Stacy but he was good to work with.

Wow! Pier is so gorgeous! :-) Interesting to imagine if she might have married Kirk Douglas (they were engaged) or if James Dean lived and they got back together. So many "what if's" since her life with Vic Damone was so sad.

Well, I think she dodged a bullet regarding Kirk Douglas. Not only was he a notorious womanizer but he has a history of violence toward women.
If he ever treated a woman violently, any obituary writer who mentions it is at risk for unemployment. This is because the actor has outlived virtually any woman he might have mistreated, so no hard evidence exists.
If a “warts-and-all book,” so to speak, about him is ever published, its author and its readers will be a day late and a dollar short.

@Muirmaiden - Major media outlets already have prepared obituaries for Kirk Douglas. When they circulate, you might find that they mention The Ragman’s Son, but they won’t go into detail about his violent treatment of women in the 1950s. That is a part of Tinseltown history that interests the same few people who gossip about the types of dresses that Pier Angeli wore.
A mass audience pays attention only to 1950s Cinemascope movies and to kinescopes of intelligent game shows. Other stuff is water under the bridge. May the allegedly anti-Semitic lady rest in peace.
When I was in junior high school, they offered Arthur Murray dance lessons in the gymnasium during the noon hours. That's how we learned to dance back in the 40's. Fox-trot, waltz, two-step, etc. Unfortunately, that's where my dancing abilities became petrified. There were feet drawn and numbered in paper on the floor showing where to step, and one stepped on them in proper order. My dance partner, Gordon Best and I even entered the season's end contest. I don't think we won it. I know of only a very few of us still alive who can dance "properly" with each other anymore. Unfortunately Gordon moved to Sacramento during high school, so at dance parties, I mostly watch everyone and drink gin.
Sweet lord Jesus, did Vic hit it out of the park there. She was stunning.
Robert Q Lewis strikes me as a very fun gy. I would have loved to have a sit down with all the WML panelist and really get to know them.
Pier was absolutely beautiful, a luminous, fragile beauty. Haunted eyes. Diahann Carroll, who married Vic in the 1980's, didn't have many nice things to say about him in the aftermath of their divorce, but by all accounts, he seems to have mellowed in his old age.
Wow, Pier and Ms. Carroll were soulful beauties. Vic's an attractive guy, but he certainly was successful out of his league with women (at least while it lasted).
I read Vic's autobiography where he comes off squeaky clean.

Angeli was born in Italy and romantically linked to Kirk Douglas and James Dean before marrying Damone. Their marriage ended two years after appearing on this show in 1958.
Pier Angeli is a celebrity in her own right and was before they got married but, yet, Vic Damone writes “Mr.&Mrs.” on the board. I also didn’t think he was going to let her answer any questions. Controlling much, Mr. Damone?

Been watching WML in sequence, and, whaddya know, I tuned into this episode exactly 68 years later after it was initially broadcast, to the day: June 17, 2024. I was negative 8 years old on June 17, 1956 and my mother would turn 30 in a few weeks, on July 3, 1956.
Just now found out that Dorothy was a redhead, that explains why she's so doggone pretty, redheads are my favorite anyway. First time ever seeing Pier Angeli, what a gorgeous lady
John Daly never asks the second challenger where she is from. It is apparently an oversight because there would be nothing about that information that would have given a clue to her occupation. Bennett Cerf usually called John on it when the challenger's location was omitted, but he wasn't there for this episode and no one else stepped to the plate.
There is a Jennie Reiter listed in the 1940 census as having been born in Russia in about 1903 and living on the Lower East Side of Manhattan with her husband and three sons, aged 20, 19 and 13.
I don't know if most people realize that Arthur Murray had a show on tv for over 10 years - and it was on all four networks during its run - btw, it was funny that they brought up Marlon Brando, because Pier Angeli was supposed to star in a version of Romeo and Juliet (until a British-Italian production was announced the same year staring Laurence Harvey)

Everyone on this panel is dead. They come alive while watching. These shows are the best because it was entertainment at its best which now is forever lost. Nowadays shows are filled with stupidity and vulgarity.
Maria, so true. I was eating supper on a tray and watching tv while doing so. A promo for Naked and Afraid(I think it was)came on and before I could reach for remote to skip thru it a female appeared and was talking about sticking her finger up a man's rectum.

well i don't think so because i read in a website "vintage paparazzi" whish he talked about the real reason why they divorced and is was his mother-in-law who controlled her daughter and keep telling how a bad husband he was and that's why she didn't wanna be with him anymore even after the birth of their son Perry. Ithink he was so much in love with her and she was too because in the same website she confesses how much she loved Vic so much .I think it's the truth because she could marry James Dean but her mother refused cause he wasn't Catholic and i think in gerenal after all i said that her mother who killed her inside and vic was a victim of Pier's unforgettable love to Dean even Vic and Pier met before she knows Dean and asked her out so many times and it was good between them but unfornately after joining the army Pier mets James? I wished that Vic was the true love of Pier and not James and that is just an opinion.

I was in contact with their son Perry Damone and I asked him if he was James Dean's kid. Of couse he said no and in fact looked like Vic Damone.
I was married to Perry for 24 years...we had many inquiries over the years about him being Jame's Deans son. But no.... he was Vic's son. Such a sad story about Pier's life. Perry loved both of his parents very much. Perry sadly passed away after a valiant fight with a rare cancer in 2014. May they all rest in peace always. Love to all of them.
@@nancydamone8995 When I was in touch with Perry He was working at the radio station. I was living in Los Angeles then and I did go to the church were Pier and Vic had married. I was trying to figure out across the street the location James Dean was on his motorcycle. In case you didn't know the rumor was at Piers wedding James Dean was across the street outside on his motorcycle and gunned the engine when they came out.

gcjerryusc I've retired to a villa in France. ;) There are ad revenues, yes, but honestly, it's a pittance when you consider (a) Everything on TH-cam is geared towards the really huge channels. Not even a solidly, consistently highly viewed channel like this means anything to YT. I'm beyond small potatoes. You need to have hundreds of thousands of views a day to really earn substantial money on TH-cam. (b) If you divided what the ad revenues have brought in by the number of hours I've put into to this, I earn less than Chinese children assembling iPhones. (c) It's the funds from ad revenues that enable me to do things like lay out $500 of my own personal money to acquire the "lost" episode of WML from 10/1/50 earlier this year, not to mention having the equipment and software I need.
This was a labor of love, not an attempt to earn money. I honestly only ever enabled the ads because I felt that TH-cam would recommend the videos a lot more if they were directly earning money on them (they get 45% of any ad revenue). And this did, in fact, turn out to be the case. Within a month of enabling ads, three years ago, the channel viewership literally doubled.
I always encourage people to use AdBlock if the ads annoy them, and all ads can be skipped in 5 seconds even without AdBlock (some channel owners set it up so that ads can't be skipped, which earns them more money at the expense of forcing viewers to sit through ads that can be several minutes long). Otherwise I wouldn't have them on here at all. Just a clarification, not that I want to give the impression that I have any problem with the question.

What’s My Line guest panelist Gore Vidal said many years after the CBS show’s cancellation that the television commercial is the only art form that was invented and perfected in the United States. TH-cam ads are more like TV commercials than any other art form. You can call TH-cam a slice of Americana.

Vic allegedly beat Pier. This show must've been before all that happened because they look so comfortable with each other.
Ginger Astaire To me, they don't look very comfortable. If you watch their body-language, you'll see that he's totally dominating her, he even gives her instructions about what to answer The Panel.
True, he's dominating but they're both smiling and giggling. The only sign of tension I saw was when he interrupted her at the end. Still, she should've stay with James Dean.
Ginger Astaire It wouldn't have helped her very much, since J. Dean would die from her anyway. I agree about that those two would have been a much happier couple, though. Too pitty her mother was so ambitious/dominating, and as I see it, without good judgement concerning men. Watch Damone and Angeli again, and see the frightened girl, grateful for every sign of good mood and smile from her husband. Makes me sick, because I've seen couples like that before.

All I ever heard about Arthur Murray as a child was how aggressive the Arthur Murray Dance Studios were. Signing up lonely old ladies for lifetime memberships, and that sort of thing.
I was in contact with their son Perry Damone and I asked him blankly are you James Dean's son? Of course he said no and he looked almost the splitting image of Vic. Some James Dean books say Pier secretly saw Dean after her marriage to Vic.

My mom was born in raised in Youngstown, Ohio in Mahoning County. Although Hubbard is barely into the neighboring county of Trumbull, just north of Mahoning County, they are in the same Metropolitan Statistical Area. My god parents (Mom's brother and his wife) lived in Hubbard for a number of years, including when I was born. When I was about 7 months old (a few years before this episode) my first visit to the State of Ohio was to Hubbard.
I grew up about 10 miles from Youngstown and had an aunt who lived in Hubbard. My aunt's husband was a musician who played at the big nightclub in Youngstown, the Mural Room. Although he was blind, he played the piano and organ simultaneously. He also had a sideline as a piano tuner.
In those years, that was a wonderful area to grow up in. Fueled by the steel industry, prosperity reigned for almost everyone. Crime was practically nonexistent. As kids, we were able to roam freely, play ball in any empty field, explore the nearby woods, and a thousand other things that kids can't readily do now. As Archie and Edith used to sing, "those were the days".
I wrote the other comment before watching the show. Imagine my surprise when the contestant signed in and he had the same last name as my uncle! There is a very good chance that they were related -- there can't be all that many Baumgardner families in Hubbard. Based on their respective ages, the contestant could have been my uncle's father or uncle.
At the time of this taping James Dean was the most popular actor in the US. He was also dead.

Very sad and tragic what happened to Pier. She killed herself in 1971 at only 39. Reportedly because she never got over the death of James Dean. In 1956, only a year had passed since he was killed in a car accident.

Vic Damone lived to be 89. Pier Angeli died very young, at 39 years old apparently. Her twin sister was Marisa Pavan.

Dorothy was, by all measurements, the most brilliant of all the panelists. The show was never as good after her death.

I re-watched the MG segment after reading all the negative comments about Vic. I didn't see any of the drama between them. Aside from the sign in, he seemed fine to me.
I enjoyed Paul Winchell as a panelist. Its strange though, he appears often, then all of the sudden he quits appearing, never to appear again.
Arthur Murray was a lovely man, very obliging. And they respected him enough to let him meet the panel and not shuffle him off stage quickly.

That was common back then. As a genealogist, one of the most annoying things is the way people used to only list husband's names (Mr. and Mrs. husband's name & surname) in things like obituaries until around the late 1960's or early 70's.

all the people here blame Vic and supported Pier but in a website i read their whole story detailed: how they met and how they get married and why they get divorced ? and the victim in the end was them both. Vic loved her more than anything and give her everything she wanted but her evil mother destroyed everything.

He looked bewildered and befuddled. He took forever to answer some of the simplest questions and it didn't seem to be a matter of him not hearing the question.

Lois Simmons - It’s a real mystery as to why he was so slow in answering! And you could see that the panel were getting quite annoyed by it. Surprisingly John Daley was not assisting him in answering, as he usually does when a question might be somewhat ambiguous. To be honest, Murray’s slowness was bugging me as well!

Yes, Damone was a "controller." And from other reports, also abusive. Such a shame, those qualities in an elegant- looking man with a gorgeous singing voice.

That level of controlling IS abuse, althgouh I gather from a comment here he was violent in other ways. I felt so sorry for her, she was biting her lip and trying to speak but he cut her off. Dreadful person.
@@stephaniestanley8041 Watch how he controls the physical contact and when she can speak- the whole interaction. Look at his actual behaviors and her face. Thinking controlling is protective will lead you down some dark paths- be careful.
I loved the film "Somebody Up There Likes Me" that starred Paul Newman as Rocky Graziano and Pier Angeli as his wife. From that point on, I've always considered Newman to be one of the handsomest men that I had ever seen.
Twenty years later, there was another boxing movie, the first sports movie to win an academy award. That movie also featured a woman who would eventually marry the boxer who was the title role in the movie, although the marriage didn't occur until a sequel. I see a fairly close resemblance between Miss Angeli and Talia Shire, who played Adrian Pennino Balboa in the Rocky franchise of movies.
Rocky Graziano's birth name was Thomas Rocco Barbella. "Rocky Barbella" is very similar to "Rocky Balboa". Rocky Balboa's character, however, was based on heavyweight fighter Chuck Wepner.
Stallone borrowed a lot from SUTLM in his Rocky movies.

Interesting you should raise this because when he was a regular panelist, Fred Allen insisted on one or the other and would correct Arlene when she did not use his preferred phraseology. My understanding is that any of these propositions would be acceptable and have the same meaning.

Pier Angeli was a good and gorgeus italian actress, I think Vic wanted to help her, answering first because of the language. I am italian and I can say it's quite difficult to understand every words and the panelists speak very quickly... Instead for the signature (Mr & Mrs Vic Damone) he wasn't too nice to her...

I don't think Pier looked very happy, and it wasn't that long after she split with my Jimmy Dean - what a fool, I'd have never left you Jimmy. Of course, Jimmy was meant to be in Somebody Up There Likes Me too.
She was a dainty little doll..with the voice of an angel......mr damone.was VERY clever the way he eliminated her identity.....that "kiss"was to show possessiveness....she UNDERSTOOD perfectly...she didnt need his PROMPTING( tom cruise used to do that to Kidman...whispering a nd coaching in her ear)......Dean .&Pier.were sadly..star crossed lovers-Romeo&Juliet...not to be......damone had a very bad rep re:women..........GOODNIGHT SWEET PIER

My long-deceased sister went to high school with Vito Farinola (Vic Damone) and I went to the same school (Lafayette in Brooklyn.) 5 years later with Sandy Koufax. (I never met Sandy and I don't think my sister ever met Vito.)

Many major league ballplayers and other famous people came out of Lafayette HS, although sadly, at least for a time, they didn't even have enough people come out for baseball and had to drop the team. But is HS, Sandy Koufax's best sport was basketball by far. He scrimmaged once against the NY Knicks (a good team at that time) and their best player, Harry Gallatin predicted that Sandy would play in the NBA someday.
Around the time you attended Lafayette, the Aspromonte brothers (Ken and Bob) were attending there, as well as Larry King and Fred Wilpon. Did you know any of them?

Pier was a nice harmless person who made a living reciting dialogue that had been written by other people.
Had more career counseling for women existed in Los Angeles during the 1950s, she could have found a second niche in the studio system, maybe one that involved graphic design or voiceover work. Then her entire life would not have revolved around James Dean.
So sad that both ladies died from drug overdose, as did Marilyn M. But I believe, as do many others, that Kilgallen and Monroe were definitely assisted in that overdose. What exactly is it about "showbiz" that so often leaves misery behind?
@@barrykendrick3146 No. The Manhattan DA very recently reopened the case in late of later published reports and declined to prosecute. Case closed.

There were a number of reasons to find her death suspicious. Consider, for example, the presence of Tuinal in her blood: a drug for which she did not have a prescription & known for its fatal nature in combinations with other barbiturates & alcohol.
