I have this engine on a Great Planes Escapade 61 and it runs great. I bought it in 2012 and its been a favourite of mine eversince. Thanks for sharing this video David. It was very enjoyable.

Just bought one yesterday at a swap meet. Brandy new in box. Now, if I can just find a plane to put it in. ;)

I dig the Royal Tach. I haven't seen one since the 70's

Yeah....It does not seem to be accurate at the high end, or not calibrated. If I cannot believe the high end readings I doubt I will continue to use it. I have had several ACE Tachmaster II units but they require the button to be pressed in to read, so they are not good candidates for videos. I don't have them anymore either...

I prefer the digital tach for an quick and easier indication of rpm.
The analog is nice but you have to be directly over it to avoid parallax.
Digital is readable at a wider angle. Thanks for posting the comparison!

I have a major problem with my OS 95v. The drive washer came loose due to wear and tear and I nearly crashed my plane but was lucky to belly land it in long grass. Anyway I sent away for a new drive washer and received it today. When I installed on the engine it has the same amount of slop and movement as the old one had. When I started the engine it was fine at idle but when I opened the throttle the prop came loose . I had it well tightened , but the main cause of this is down to very poor design of this d cup drive washer by OS.

That is the difference between 2000’s OS quality and earlier years. The highest quality engines IMO were built between 1980-1997

Very nice engine. Something tells me there should have been more than just 2 different sizes in the V series.

David I have a question, when you talk about the high speed needle, you say 2 full turns from open, shouldn’t that be 2 full turns from closed? Do these engines have idle mixture? I have one of these, and am having a lot of troubles getting it to run

I've got the 95v in a sterling stearman and the 62v in a pica waco..

Did os really discontinue these? I have a 62v on backorder from tower hobbies.. I'm gonna be pissed if they cancel my order!

Let me rephrase that, they do not continue to development these and make additional displacements. The design is shelved.

Analog Tach is nice but not necessary if I have clearly visible numbers on the conventional Tacho.
What makes you say the Alphas are d***a** engines? I have seen many different of them running at my field and they perform really great. The power output is superior to the V-series and they run like swiss watches. The only problem is the d***a** price tag.

My opinion of the Alpha series is based solely on three things. Appearance, PRICE, and the bad things I have read about them. I do not judge or select engines by MAX power output either. There are MANY factors I judge an engine by, but max power is never one of them. Folks that want max power need to stick to 2 stroke engines. As always, these are MY opinions.

The only bad thing about the Alphas I know about is that they do not have a breather nipple and tend to have corroded internals because it is not possible to add after run oil. This can be fixed easily by installing a nipple e.g. on the camshaft cover. I recommend you test one of these Alpha engines. They outperform 2-stroke engines easily if you are limited by noise restrictions. Pylon engines are not welcome everywhere.

I got a 95v for free. guy crashed it cracked the crankcase and was gonna toss it, so he gave it to me.. no other damage to it.. now to reassemble and fly it

The tach is cool if it's not too much trouble to set them both up.

The issue I had was with smaller props. I need to come up with a different way to mount the digital. It needs to be really close to the prop hub to read well within the frame of the video. It was an experiment and a work in progress as you will see in the other videos I shot today. I am just not happy with the high RPM readings of this analog tach. It seemed about 1000 RPM low.

that is a really nice motor. don't like the alpha series motors.
