Excel's Average and AverageIf function with wildcards by Chris Menard

  • Average is a popular function in Excel. AverageIf allows you to set criteria for the average. Averageif has three arguments, and two are required. Averageif takes care of issues that the Average function can't handle.
    For example, if you want to average outstanding invoices and some invoices have negative days and zeros since they are not due. Using the Average function will give you the wrong answer since it includes negative days and zeros. Averageif will take care of the negatives and zeros. Averageif will give you the right answer.
