I've got a colleague who was a WO2 in the Royal Logistics Corps and was 22 years an Army chef. He says British troops eat much healthier as its meat, carbs and two veg options. It's all cooked from scratch as it's cheaper than buying processed food. I asked him whether US soldiers eat better and he said they eat a lot of branded food and it's not as healthy. He showed me some videos of his cooks in Operation Helmand and the selection on offer to our troops was impressive.

As a former US Marine, this brings back many memories of eating these. They're not gourmet dining, but when you're tired and hungry enough, they will definitely do the trick. We usually never used the heating element. Can't eat too many though, they'll back you up if you don't watch out.

Excellent point that in Infantry etc, you are never going to eat one of these hot as the smell carries too fair. We usually got one per day and you ate it in the prone with somebody pulling security. I was in when we went from C Rats to MREs and the first MREs were so bad our company mascot (a dog) would not eat them. Everybody started stealing bottles of hot sauce from the chow hall to kill the taste and thats why Tabasco is now included in them them now (I retired in 2008 so I am way out of touch). Saw great improvements, but too many sweets before I retired. People dont realize that things like Peanut Butter help with dysentary alot. And LOL we called them Meals Rejected by Ethiopia at frist and when got more politically correct, Massive Rectal Explosion. Take care Marine. Former Army Infantry Paratrooper and overall bonehead

It's very cool to see someone, that isn't really into rations, give their opinion of one! This one was pretty tasty, im glad Joe sent a good menu!
Also, supposedly, a US Army Ranger has a confirmed kill using an mre spoon. I don't know if that's actually true, but the Aussie spoon is the best.

We do have a great MRE for keep the energy going while in the field, I'm glad that they improved them from when they first came out way back in the day. The dehydrated beef patty or the Omelet wasn't great for a quick meal. speaking of that I can't remember ever getting 15 minutes of time to warm them up for a hot meal. The MRE that miss is the Chicken Ala King pack, would trade for that one all the time, because the case would be opened by the Sgt and tossed at you without knowing what it was coming your way.
    Have a great day Ash

Yep, it was almost guaranteed that as soon as one got started with scoff, somebody would come along with something that was far more important to be doing than eating and enjoying the meal.

The spoon is indeed useful, and far superior than what was included with the Canadian ration packs. While most Canadians on my deployment agreed that the food of the American ration pack was superior, all agreed that at the very least one should acquire the MRE pack just for the spoon. It's a great long spoon, made of durable plastic, whereas the spoon included with the Canadian ration was nothing more than what you'd find in a fast food restaurant, short and easily broken during use. There are countless photographs of Canadian soldiers sporting a brown plastic spoon handily tucked into a breast pocket or into a flak vest. We had no issues getting our hands on the MRE pack as we usually had a small detachment of American soldiers working with the Afghan National Army and they were more than happy to trade us their MRE packs for our IMP rations. I'll never understand exactly what it was those Americans liked so much about the Canadian ration.

I'm always slightly amused by the fascination Brits have with American peanut butter! I'd point out for you non-American viewers that the peanut butter and jelly on bread combo is sort of an American staple comfort food. As always great review, I've downed my share of MREs as well.

Maybe consider trying a Swiss or German ration pack as those two nations are known for quality products.

    Everyone seems to be asking:
1,250 calories One MRE provides one third of the Military Recommended Daily Allowance of vitamins and minerals determined essential by the Surgeon General of the United States. The contents of one MRE meal bag provide an average of 1,250 calories (13 % protein, 36 % fat, and 51 % carbohydrates).

American MREs are probably the best. And the incredible variaty of meals give you always a surprise. Indian, Italian, French etc style meals.
I noticed sugar takes the most important part of the ingredients in any military ration pack most likely due to the need of calories.
BTW the Italian Army should now be the next one.

Hey! You should try to get your hand on our swedish ration packs. They are quite similar to the american ones but there are additions with our traditional swedish meatballs.
Remember when i was younger and my dad came home from military courses, he always brought some Rations with him. Loved stealing food from them.

Hi Ash i have tried the US MRE ration packs and found them a lot better than the British Army ones i have tried. You get a lot more menu varieties. I still have a couple left to try, after watching your video today i'll definitely be trying the others over the next few days.

I’m part of the national guard and the first time I had a MRE was when I was in RSP( basically preparing someone for actual basic training)and it wasn’t that bad, mine had a tootsie roll. Had a bunch more in basic. You got one of the more good ones for sure. The spoon you mentioned actually have a confirmed kill, a army ranger used the spoon to take down someone. MREs are designed to fill you up for most of the day while your in the field and the heater you don’t need it sometimes since the food is already cooked it just make it more warmer. I just simply eat the main course without the heater when we are on a tight schedule.

Hello Ash, someone else has also mentioned it but could you add up the all calories in the total packs assuming you ate and drank everything, it would be interesting to know what each military thinks their soldiers need for a meal in the field, cheers.

    Hi Ash
    Infotaining as always.
I first sampled MRE 32 years ago whilst on Op Granby. They made a nice change to our Tinned Composite (Compo) rations. Bearing in mind an MRE is one meal, UK Rat packs are a full 24 hours supply of meals, drinks and snacks.
UK rations have certainly come on since those days and are now (as you sampled), also boil in the bag meals, with a wide range of menus.
Just last weekend I had Beef Burrito style rice and beans and Hunter's chicken in a pack, filling and tasty.😁
UK also now supply a "Patrol" ration. This is essentially an MRE, sufficient for a 12hr period.

I might be biased as an American but man I love US MREs. The only other country I’ve had is France, which comes with more bells and whistles and has a good reputation, but the US MRE is still near and dear to me

That bread whilst tasting stodgy also looked like a huge delicious biscuit!!!! Only to be made more delicious looking by the addition of PB&J. Also….very very American to add the PB&J🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💥💥💥💥💥 i’m reminded of that scene from Amadeus, when Salieri is talking about patriotism, while referring to some sort of Italian delicacy😂😂😂

I don't know if I could acquire and Australian version ration packs, but if someone or your self could acquire one (or two), that would great to see in on a video one day?

I have been to Arizona many times and faced the snow in Flagstaff and heat in Tucson within a few days of each other. My jacket is actually a cheap multi purpose jacket I picked up in Costco for under £20 a few years ago - it has been a great jacket and was worth every penny.
