Hello everyone, this is Matsusue from Bonsai Suishoen. Today's video is part of our beginner's bonsai series. We will have three parts on Japanese black pine ("kuromatsu"黒松): leaf thining ("hasukashi"葉透かし), bud triming ("metsumi"芽摘み), and bud pruning ("mekiri"芽切り). We will go through them in three videos, thank you very much for your support.
[0:33] Now we will begin the explanation. This is a typical branch from a black pine around this time of the year. The branch has been left alone for a while. It is a chunk of cutting that came off a larger tree. Let's look closer at it and understand the structures.
[1:00] Let's look at this single branch here. On the top here is this years new growth, which will usually be trimmed. In the middle section here is a second layer of needles. And on the bottom, there are needles that are turning slightly yellow. The middle section is last year's growth, and the bottom is from the year before the last. These needles from two years ago are the shortest. They don't look too great, and have not grown very long. We do not need to keep these, and can just take them off. This is the gist of needle thinning, to get rid of the old leaves from either last or the one before the last year. Like this.
[2:00] Now let's turn to last year's growth. It looks like there is plenty of growth from last year. [turn branch towards the camera]. Here, on the top, are this year's needles. Beneath, there are about 20 pairs of last year's old leaves attached right now, approximately equidistant from each other. By equidistance, we mean when viewed from the top, you can find the pairs go around like this: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (*). About 4~5 in a full cycle. We will place the leaves over here so people can see how much we have taken off. [plucking gracefully...]
[3:08] Now there are 4 leaves remaining from last years growth, and we have taken off about this much. Let's count... 1, 2, 3, ..., 12, 13. So we have left about a quarter on the branch. Most commonly we would reduce to about 1/3 ~ 1/4 of the original numbers. As we reduce the old leaves, energy can be redirected to the current growth of this year.
[3:52] In the situation where bud trimming is needed, you would actually just make the cut right here. [Point with scissors] Please trim right here for a bud trimming. The purpose of the procedure of plucking off old leaves is to preserve the strength for the new growth at the top.
[4:13] No let's look at the smaller needles over here. Let's look closer here, and we can again recognize these being the needles from two years ago. They are turning a bit yellow. Now we go ahead and take off these yellow leaves, [plucking artfully... ] with them being leaves from two years ago. For last year's growth, there are about five pairs of leaves. We can leave all five or just four of those. By reducing old leaves this way, we concentrate the energy to the new leaves at the growing tip. This is what leaf thinning is about.
[5:11] This time, hopefully in a way that is approachable for beginners, we talked about how to thin old leaves, the so-called leaf thinning("hasukashi") procedure. Leaf thinning is essential in bonsai care, so please keep these points in mind. That is all for today's video. Thank you very much for your attention.

    将来的には先端の芽の力を抑えて、取った古葉のところから葉を生やすのでしょうか?
