Great video Levi, I went from a thumb button release to a back tension release, and it saved archery for me. Thank you very much for the awesome tips.

I picked up a Trufire sear because you endorsed it… couldn’t have been more disappointed.. returned 2 in less than a week because of cheap materials. The set screws kept coming loose causing misfires after 30 arrows. Then after tightening it the second time, the set screw stripped, on both releases.

I shoot back tension with a finger release for hunting. The only one that I have found that works for this is the Carter "Like Mike". The break is glass smooth and you adjust the tension of the trigger so that you can preload it. I set it so that the first joint of my index finger sits on the forward side of the trigger. This means that the index finger is party wrapped around the trigger, the spring prevents it from firing prematurely like most finger releases these days, which seem to all have hair triggers.
Works perfect. You can also change the springs inside the Like Mike to change the tension range of the trigger. Warning- the early versions of the release use a magnet to return the hook to the locked position after a shot. The magnet would attract junk and eventually clog, then fail. Mine failed as I drew on a big 5 point bull elk at 30 yards. Very tough lesson.
The new version does not use a magnet, old versions can be converted.
While I like to use a Scott Longhorn for target work, I don't like this type of release for hunting because often the situation requires you to make the shot from strange positions that may not allow proper use of a BT release like the longhorn. Even though the "Like Mike" is intended for back tension, you can still punch it if necessary to make the shot.

Thanks for the helpful tip Levi, I'll be sure to put that to good use

That's the same reason I switched to thumb release. No punching the release.

Hi Levi! Not trying to be argumentative. Your recent Field and Stream article series stated you don't shoot back tension. This is kinda 180 degrees from what you are saying here. Can you help clarify, please? Thanks for doing these 2min game breaks. I love watching them.

He shoots a back tension "release" , he triggers it by pulling (twisting the release) with his ring finger

He does shoot a back tension release because I've watched him shoot one. In fact at every tournament I've gone he has three releases in his release pouch

The release is a "hinge". "Back tension" is more of a method, not a release. Hinge releases are commonly called back tension releases (Scott specifically calls them back tension releases). It's confusing because there is more than one way to shoot a hinge.

This is a hinge release, not backtension... Backtension is like the silverback.

I'm scared that when I gonna pull my bow back the release is gonna go off. I just thought of this while I was typing but think about it if the release went off on your draw it would be a super suprise shot.LOL

Jim Popsicle had my release fail. The stitching around the bar or tube that's sewn in gave way

The Tru-Ball Sweet Spot has a safety that allows you to safely draw a hinge release. Check it out.

Chantz Keller shoot several. I use the Tru Ball HT pro. I have a few shooters who use the HT and a few who use the longhorn. One with the HBC. My daughter uses the fulcrum. I hunt with a scott Exxus. I tried the backspin, atention, Stans, and several others before settling on "the one". I'd like to try the new hbx just to see. Releases are a really personal thing, especially hinges. It has to feel right in your hand and be adjustable to your taste. Levi actually has a backspin and exxus model that he put his name on. The backspin creates too much distance between my first two fingers and makes the shot timing feel off, but I have smaller hands.
