This video was super helpful!!! I just rescued an 8th month old jack (he is now a 10 month old gelding) who is also very fearful, unsocalized, unhalterbroke, and reserved. I have slowing been making progress but I am definitely going to invest in clicker training!
what u usin for treats in training? Just got her cant hardly touch her and needs to be trimmed badly will they work in a round pen? im all horse, she a companion animal for a 1 cow hefer but needs immediate maintenance
Like the video it's hard to find good donkey training videos. How long did it take you? What did you use for treats? I definitely need to try this with my Mini she wont let me touch her and those back legs are out of the question
This method seems effective but won't it have downsides? Like if you were to stroke the donkey and not click = no treat then wouldn't they become confused or slightly aggressive. Please correct me of I'm wrong but in a polite manner. I'm new to the mini donkey & do key world and I'm trying to find donkey training videos but there aren't to many out there 😔 Anyways thank you so much!
Well it matters with the donkey itself. Some may, but most will just shrug it off. Usually with a method like this, the trainer would slowly increase the amount of petting that will be enough for a treat. (Ex.- first week: one pat= treat. Next week: 2 pats= treat and so on) So, you are pretty much weaning him off the treats. Now to answer you question about just dropping the clicker and treats all together, I would think that the donkey would be annoyed, but not aggressive. Hope this helped!
it's associative learning. The donkey will learn to feel better about handling because of the treats and then simply enjoy handling for it's own sake. if done correctly--the treats/clicks will come farther and farther apart so the donkey is weaned off of the treats--although you never know, there may be another treat just for being cute!
I know with dogs you purposely withhold rewards every once in a while and it cements the learning. There is a term for it in human psychology. You train most animals in a way where the reward is no longer needed ultimately. Otherwise, it would be unworkable to get animals to do things if you had to constantly reward every single move.
@MultiAnimalcrackers over here, if a person knows the difference, lol, it is just donkey or longears! But minimules are more readily available, so we really don't see that many 'donks' hahaha:)
My new donkey doesn't like apples, carrots or the treats we bought for her. I don't think she had them before at her last home. Can't get near her yet. Going to try to ignore her into the round pen.
You're not teaching him anything. I think you think you are, but you're not. There is no logic for the clicking and you're going hit or miss and not building any level of reliability, Also, donkeys have a predisposition for obesity, so this is not a good idea at all.
This method is obviously successful. The donkey is resting the leg and is very comfortable with the whole thing. That is a huge improvement on a fearful animal.
Touching him is the whole problem, definitely not the reward. In general, most animals don't like to be touched, especially patted. Stroking is more acceptable as it reminds them of licking by their mothers. Petting and hugging is not a reward; they just learn to tolerate it. This is the goal of this training here. Of course, the donkey will never "enjoy" it as the video tries to promote. Hugging is a human thing that we want to convey our feelings to others. We may feel loving towards the donkey, but love does not get conveyed to the animal because they don't work like us.
Different strokes different folks. If you like rewards by petting go ahead! If you like rewards by treats go ahead. Each animal is different, what works for one may not for another.
Thats not training,,,,you do not train donkys,,mules or horses with treats,,,,they are not dogs,,,,you come to my neck of the woods and you will see hpw to get a caballo or burro out of his elments and be trained with bare hands no ropes no treats,,,you are fooling people,,,,because no treats no obedience

what u usin for treats in training? Just got her cant hardly touch her and needs to be trimmed badly will they work in a round pen? im all horse, she a companion animal for a 1 cow hefer but needs immediate maintenance
Love the idea - will have to try clicker training. What are you using for the treat?
Awww, I want a donkey!!!
Angie Taylor lol they are pains!! Get one that is halter broke
Just talk to tbe animal already! Whos clicking idea was that?
it was a good show.
where do you get a clicker?

What's the point of the clicker couldn't you just say good boy or good girl ?
So when their ears are back is as the same as a horses or does it mean do this more? Is there a difference?
Noises instead of talk does not always work with a traumatized equine or donkey or a mule.
yeah its so unnatural
@abirdslife Thankyou...he is doing really awesome i am really proud of him:)))

Getting on a random reward schedule is the next step to them doing something because you said it. Not for the reward.
Also enjoyed the video!

love how 'folks across the pond' call them "donks":)

@myprophet1 lol! i love the term donk..haha what do you call them?
What does a clicker do? Its terribly annoying

BIG DEAL THAT CLICKER IS ANNOYING
I hate clickers...it is annoying. yuk.
This method is sort of silly

See reply to Bonnie D above. You're not understanding the methodology.
The first method this lady is doing with the clicker she should be rewarding this animal by rubbing its shoulder or forehead. Not with treats.

I don’t reward with treats. Not in my training. I prefer a relationship not built on treats.
