I love this. I lived in an apartment on the top floor of Isabella Beecher Hooker’s house for a number of years. It was a great place to live in the years I was there.

This is amazing. The amount of detail that you provide is so incredible to think about. I really appreciate you pinpoint in the location of Oakholm. I had spent a lot of time wondering about its precise location. I look forward to coming back to Hartford and finding the spot. Like so many cities Hartford allowed this beautiful home and the Goodwin Castle to be demolished. I have to be pleased that many beautiful Hartford homes such as the Colt home survive. Thank you for a great video!

Thanks for watching my video! And if you haven't watched my other videos yet, I have one about the Goodwin Castle and one about Colt's Armsmear as well!

Another great job, Dan! May I ask, will you ever examine the area around the arsenal, which stood at the corner of Main and Pavilion Street?

I have thought about it! It's definitely one possibility for the near future. Thanks for the suggestion! BTW, I did mention the arsenal in one of my earlier videos: th-cam.com/video/fLB4fUk9fLA/w-d-xo.html

@@historywithdansterner263 yes. I did see that presentation. That area is loaded with history, including the pavilions school where JP Morgan went to school, the building on Mahl Avenue and Main Street, which is now a Masonic Lodge has been there since 1838, and in 1960 John F Kennedy spoke at the intersection of Main and pavilion Street on his way to, the portico of the Times Building. There’s really a lot to be said regarding that area.

I want more!! Also- what happened to Woodbine street? Was that east of Laurel? Part of the parking lot now?

    • @historywithdansterner263

It's gone now, but the street to the parking lot (where Woodbine was) is called Park Place. There's also another, disconnected Park Place off Laurel that leads to the Park Place Towers, at least on Google Maps.

A wonderful resource that you may or may not know of is 'History of Hartford Streets' by Perry Close. I have three copies and have just found them after moving and I'm so happy that I have them. I don't know if any are available on eBay for Amazon but the amount of History in this book is just incredible.

Harriet’s house is still on Farmington Ave as well as Mark Twain’s.

Harriet Beecher Stowe sold Oakholm because it cost so much in firewood during the winter. She lived in it for only about 6 years, not a decade. You also need to account for her time spent in Mandarin before she bought the house on Forest Street. I do appreciate this video immensely however since I have wondered exactly where Oakholm was located. Despite my critique, you have done an excellent job.

I believe it was badly constructed from the start and had leaks and other issues almost from the beginning. I have an unfinished project (from around the time I made this video) about Mandarin Home that I should probably finish some day.
