How to Make a Perfect Green Screen for $6 (Super Cheap)

  • What color and kind of green do you actually need? I've done some experimenting and you basically need any kind of green, dark green, lime green, neon green and it can be card board, paper, fabric even green bed sheets. Just make sure it is smooth enough (not graded like the cardboard I had) to take light evenly without casting any shadows. You can of course use a blue screen or any other color as long as the subject is not wearing the same color.
In this video I show you how to make a $6 green screen (6 sheets at 99 cents each and they are 22in x 28in each). I got it at Michael's arts and crafts store but you can get these anywhere like Target (69 cents ea), Walmart, Dollar Store, etc.
    Florescent Green poster board: goo.gl/ykjyyR
Wondershare Filmora video editor download: bit.ly/2HdAMb7
It works just as good or better than the actual Muslin - Green Chromakey 6 x 10 feet Backdrop i had in this video: amzn.to/2abpSTC
If you are looking to use the green screen against one wall just get the poster boards. I actually purchased like 3 muslin green screens all different sizes and slightly different colors just to experiment. Now looking back i would have rather just used green poster boards and taped it in my entire room then get the muslin fabric. Because i want the green flush against my wall the fabric is a pain to tack in and try to get it smooth as possible. The poster boards are already super smooth just need to tape it up against the wall and your ready to go. Also I like the florescent neon green poster board cause it just brightens up my room too.
You can buy green poster boards and tape it to your wall, you can paint your wall green, you can buy green fabric and tack, nail or tape it against you wall. Of course you can buy a support stand but you can also use like a cloths rack, shoe rack, white board with wheels, or actual curtain rods to hang the fabric.
FYI.. I used the Wondershare Filmora video editor for this video.

@JOSHWONDUDE it's a feature in Zoom that will attempt to put a background behind you sans green screen. It's not bad if you have 1. a lot of good light, 2. highly contrasted colors, 3. don't move a lot. Otherwise, it's just a lot of noise.

Back to you with a big THANKS!. I have meetings with real estate clients and this helped me up my image. I went to Dollar Tree and found the green poster board you described. Next to them were some stiff foam core boards. I bought three of each. I used spray adhesive to attach the green poster board to the stiff foam core boards, then used duct tape (from Dollar Tree!) to tape the backs together. I cut one of the boards about 6" narrower so all three panels could fold up to put conveniently behind the door. Now I can prop the three panels behind my leather chair resting on the arms. Another way I can set up is to fold the panels open and hang them on a slim metal curtain rod that I hang on two plastic wall hooks on the wall (bought a long time ago at....Dollar Tree!). This works in the bathroom where there is a big window with lots of light coming in and a closet door I can sit in front of. Total cost for a multi-use, stow-able and easily set-up green screen was less than $5. You get credit for the inspiration! Thank you!

I used a cheap green plastic tablecloth from a party supply that cost only a buck or two back in the Aughts. It worked pretty well considering I was just using regular Flip cameras at the time and they were only VGA resolution.
The biggest mistakes I see people do with green screen is not lighting it properly (you really should have separate lights just illuminating the screen) and then having the subject too close to the screen which causes shadows to fall on the screen (making that "staticky" effect in the key area) and also has "green spill" because light bouncing off the screen falls on the subject and since reflected light picks up color the subject is now green and again more static. (Movie Bob gets both of these because he stands right against his painted wall.)

Love how you calmly talk about the green screen. No attitude. Just up front info. Great technique. Wish more youtubers would follow suit. I opted for the green screen muslin, and only paid $17 on Amazon. I had 2 speaker stands over 6 feet tall so I able to hang them with some spring clips with ease. It was 6 by 9 feet and it works and looks great., but I'm kinda thinking It would have been a little cheaper your way. Not much when you consider I had it delivered so I didn't have to drive to the store. May buy some green paper for side projects. Great idea! I have more space than you so I had no problem creating a stage about 5 feet in front for a puppet video scenario. Works great. Thanks for the info...

Green is used because it is the opposite of skin colors, so the computer can find it and remove it easily. Any color can be used, just use a color that is opposite of what you want to remain opaque or seen. If you are recording a light green object, you would NOT use a green screen. You would use a pink or orange screen, or something opposite of what you want to keep. Make sense? You would not use a green screen to shoot the hulk, unless you want an invisible hulk... Bright red might do the trick...
What I like about the poster board is no damned wrinkles that are hard to light properly. And it can be rolled up once it's taped together. I am headed to the dollar store right now... bye. And, thanks...

One thing to add that I have come across, is that a green screen with more blue in it than yellow is better. The reason is,as a light skinned human, I have a lot of yellow in my skin and if I set the chroma key to the right color I start to fade away. That is why the muslin screen is slightly darker, more blue in it. So keep that in mind when picking your collor. P.s. I used flat paint from the hardware store, you can even take paint chips home to experiment and find the best green.

Hot diggity dog! I was thinking about the same thing. But, I was concerned about seams. I guess that's not an issue. The key is overlapping, I guess?
And now I understand what 'noise' means in chroma key. You just made my day a little brighter! Thanks 🦋

Use glue dots (strong/permanent) for overlapping the boards, and bright LED lighting on the boards so things don't heat up.

They used to be. There are green screens created with very specific reflective properties with a pantone that is exactly 255 green from chromakeying applications, but most software at this point doesn't actually do a chroma key, it does a color key. That means that rather than eliminating a portion of the video signal, the software is just finding and removing pixels of a specific color value, or within a specific color range. The traditional blue screen was used initially because it was easier to remove chroma blue from a video signal, and then someone developed an affordable way to remove green, which is better because it's a less natural color than blue. However, with a color key you can remove any color you want.
The same is true for camera calibration charts. It used to cost $5000+ for a proper camera calibration chart because of the specific printing practices and material they used. Now I can get on online that works 99% as well for about $15. If I were making a $100m movie I'd use an expensive calibration chart and green screen, but for a TH-cam channel... fuck it. Go with the cheap.

If you want professional quality backdrop they are expensive. No pro studios would use cardboard. Usually they build their own and use chroma green paint on a solid smooth back drop with rounded corners. For home use this is fine and you could curve it around most corners with exception of floor and ceiling where the corner is more complex geometry. The green needs to saturate properly and that’s where the high end paints for $60/gl come in. Even so a gallon for $60 isn’t terrible if you take your work seriously and want professional results.

12 yrs ago it was a bit more costly. But it's just fabric or what this amazing guy is showing you. Save a few bucks same effect...

Thank you...you've created a very helpful video! The coronavirus has many of us staying home, and I'm teaching yoga classes to my students online. With a a green screen, I can create a virtual background of my studio, to give them all a feeling like we're still there. And your ideas are so helpful for someone on a budget, as I am. Thanks, again!

it is all tie lighting and even balanced lighting as it's colour that isn't in the foreground preferable with a mat finish so there of not hot spots ro0om size only matters if you can't get 1 metre infro0ntof the screen

+Ari Amore you can get the smooth green tape from there too. It just makes it easier so u don't have to line the papers up perfectly. The tape does not have to be same exact color as paper either.
