Mind blown. Never in my teenage life would I ever think I would be watching a video of these guys discussing music. This is super cool. This is also a "hellooooo, you're not 17 anymore," lol.
I had Duran Duran on the inside of my bedroom door!!!! John Taylor was my love and favorite! But Billy Idol, at the top of the Empire State Building for the 40th celebration of Rebel Yell was EPIC!!!! ❤
My dad who died of cancer when I was 4 yrs old, the baby of four kids, used to to play the accordion…he entertained the women, as first born in 1942, during WW II. They would dress him up in beautiful suits and he would tap dance and sing for them! Lovvve this! ❤
Billy Idol is long overdue his rightful place in the Rock And Roll of Fame. It's kind of like the US Judicial system: those who belong in there are kept out and those who don't deserve to be in there are just taking up space.
Two genuine icons from two VERY different London genres at the time - the 'new romantic' DD, Gen x 'punk'. John "play that fucking base John" Taylor and William "Billy Idol" Broad. Innovative giants who have gifted the entire world epic music that still today is just mind blowing. Sadly 'Spandau Ballet' although also massive/new romantic genre have been riven with not musical but personal systemic problems. It's hard to split both bands - Idol when he teamed up with Steve "fingers" Stevens has had a solid band in place now for around 11 years, same members/Andrew Taylor tragically no longer part of DD. His guitar work, although not on the level of Stevens [who is universally respected] - but Andy Taylors distinct guitar playing gave DD a unique sound. Thanks for this video upload.
I sold pianos at a music store in New Orleans called Werlein's for Music in the late 90s/early 2000s, and Billy Idol's comments on his Irish heritage (and life before recorded music in general) is a fascinating one for people to consider: I don't know how many people can imagine a time where, if you couldn't personally play something, you simply weren't going to hear it. If your family wasn't playing music in the house, there was no music in your house. Selling pianos by the late 90s was already decades past 'highly anachronistic', but reminding people that, 'before there was radio, tv, LPs, or tapes, humans were gathering around an acoustic piano in homes 100 years ago to celebrate' was not only an effective sales line, it was a fact of reality. I taught piano for 20+ years, and I heard so many people say "I'm not qualified; I'm not good enough to play" because they thought you had to have formal training to be a musician. It's simply not true. You may need talent or experience or training to be the 'best' musician you can be, but (in America at least) the fixation on 'training' undercuts the reality of music. You feel it, you express it, and you can learn techniques to express it even more effectively to others, but if you feel it hard enough you can usually communicate that. Think Charles Ives/Stone Mason Bell or whatever.
Yes, I agree, Billy Idol is shy. When I met him at the meet and greet at the Capitol Theater on Sept. 22, 2021....I was very "enthusiastic" when I said hello to him & told him where I was from..and he just smiled & nooded his head...and I thought, geez he is overcome by my enthusiasm..and he's a bit shy. When I said hello to Steve Stevens he gave me a big hello back, he's not shy at all and very cool.
Billy could do stand up comedy lol he's brilliant 😂 but thank heck he wrote all those amazing hits with Steve Stevens, superb singer frontman and Steve is an amazing guitarist, rock on Billy and thanks for the great music 🎸🔊🎶
One of the few positives borne out of #lockdown - the diverse content produced that would have otherwise never happened. This is one such gem. Hugely entertaining.
YESSSSSS!! The randomness of uploads from our fave artists has truly been one of the best points of the last two years. I love hearing the artists speak freely rather than for 3 mins to promote something on a late night interview... Not quite Dick Cavett but definitively magical... :)
@@ingridfong-daley5899 For some odd reason, this interview was never put up on TH-cam so I figured out a way to grab it from Instagram and put it up for them. Isn't it great?!
I'm so glad I stumbled on this absolute gem! These two, along with a dozen other bands, are the soundtrack to my twenties in the 80s! My two kids have had to listen to 80s music on every road trip growing up. This was a fabulous chat/interview, I'd love to see Billy ask more questions to John next time. If I could've asked a question, it would've been how did DD find Simon? I know there were a few band members cycling through in the early years. I'd love more background on how the band morphed in the early years. The 5-figure hair spray bill had me in stitches. It's amazing they could sing so fabulously with all that sticky residue in the air, lol. I loved all their big hair. John looks 35. He was my crush in the band in the 80/90s and he's still a very talented, grounded, passionate, handsome man. I want to thank DD for one of my all-time favorite songs, Ordinary World. It helped me through grieving my young husband's cancer death. Always wondering where the life I used to recognize went, and always learning to find and survive the Ordinary World. Life's journey. The music from both John and Billy still remains relevant in my life, thank you
Oh my goodness did i love this! I cannot think of a man that has ever had the level of Billys looks and appeal...sure there's been a ton of good looking men...but Billy seriously has that extra edge of appeal.. just beautiful. He actually does seem a bit shy now that he's older or maybe sober? Idk. His interviews in the 80s are some of the best vids on youtube....he is absolutely hilarious...he says whatever comes to his mind and it is obvious he was not holding back his answers regardless what anyone thought yet he was very intelligent at the same time...unique combo...and i literally felt like i was melting looking at him. His eyes and lips and expressions..Simply Gorgeous
Two of my favorites in the same place! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I took piano lessons for six years from 6 - 11 yrs old, hated to practice, finally realized I was better at playing the stereo! lol
Love this!! My 80's teenage self is so happy right now. It is amazing hearing these stories. John is so creative to think of doing this. I had seen his other bass/music tutorial videos of DD songs during pandemic - but didn't know about these- I watched the one with Nick last night. So awesome!!!
Great interview with 2 great artists and men. Mutual love and respect is all over the place. Passionating talks about this great late 70's- mid 80's era that no other decades has ever been able to compete with in terms of creativity, energy and FUN
Yes I honestly feel very very lucky to have been born in 71 so that era really made up my formative years and I thought that kind of variety and inventiveness and energy was entirely normal! 😎
😊 Love this interesting talk and Billy's lively way - with moving hands and all face muscles alive - of looking back on music history, how he got the idea for "WHITE WEDDING" ,about his favourites and what his personal nature is like..a shy man reading a lot . Which may surprise some people watching him just on stage - as a loud, self- conscious dancing singer with rebellious songs, often in hard rock rhythm 🥁
The punk and heavy rock era was one of the most exciting fun years of my life, made me extremely happy, wonderful memories, this video is excellent in the reminiscence of that😁👍 il still keep rockin on at 55
The two hotties I crushed on so badly in the 80's. Will always love Billy Idol. Funny when asked which Duran Duran song he liked best stumped Billy. Uh oh. LOL
I loved this interview ❤️ You can see the love in his eyes when he talks about his granddaughter Poppy!!!! What a great grandparent!! Love you Billy 😍 ❤❤
The 80s music was the Best. Billy Idol , and John is from Duran Duran. High School is over. The music lives on. Billy looks amazing. He still sounds amazing!❤
Thank you for sharing! Well Billy's kept his character going for a VERY long time. They do say that the best entertainers are actually really shy off stage and I believe that. John still has a pretty youthful looking face. His hair's a bit mental though. Billy of course looks bloody amazing for 65 actually think he's 66 now.
🙏 Thanks for this exciting unbelievable glimpse into Rock history - ups and downs and funny stories 😎 Good luck to You both and Your teams 🍀🍀🍀 Love the new songs on the EP 💙 "Bitter Taste"✊✊✊
This is awesome!! It's wonderful, after all these years, to see artists that you admired (and crushed on, lol) during your youth; the love is still there♥️♥️
When Billy hit the eighties pop/rock scene it was amazing , never seen anything like many solo artists payed the way of eighties music and Billy was a major player and he is still the absolute bollox ,cool as fuck today if u dont love his music , you have nothin*
Drums was my first followed by the piano. My house was loud. My dad played piano and organ. We would sing every night and the weekends were practice or being on the road with my dad. I wouldn't change that part of my life for anything. I saw so many great bands as a child. The misfits, idol, motley crew, Ramones, Sex Pistols, the clash, the dead Kennedys, Duran Duran, to Tina Turner. It was epic part of my life and seeing the Smith's!
Simplesmente fantástico 2 lendas , Billy Idol uma lenda do rock amorzinho, Billy deveria estar sempre toda vez no rock rio aqui no Brasil 🇧🇷 todos amam❤
Billy idol should be in the rock and roll of fame
I totally agree
Yes!
Yesss
Absolutely.
Not Duran Duran then?
I met Billy Idol in Sept. 2021, now I have to meet John Taylor. John is an amazing interviewer!
Mind blown. Never in my teenage life would I ever think I would be watching a video of these guys discussing music. This is super cool. This is also a "hellooooo, you're not 17 anymore," lol.
I'm totally with you! Lol. I had pics of both of them all over my wall in JH and HS
I was thinking the same thing! Love this!!!
We were purging a storage unit and the hubs found old mags. Smash hits! Some full size posters in mint cond. Was I waaay flashed back.
❤
YESSSS! ❤
Two of my idols.....the best of the 80s and now.
Me too...What a cuople ofsuperstars
Two Billy Idols? Oh!
I had Duran Duran on the inside of my bedroom door!!!! John Taylor was my love and favorite! But Billy Idol, at the top of the Empire State Building for the 40th celebration of Rebel Yell was EPIC!!!! ❤
The two men I wanted to marry when I was 13...love this interview with two great musicians!
im 13 and that’s exactly what i wanna do
Two freakin legends!
Dang, John Taylor pretty much conducted this as an interview. He's a natural. I want to see a John Taylor TH-cam channel!
Me too! 💖
Ciertamente, tiene el talento para conversar temas interesantes!!! 🙋🏽♀️Voto por eso!!!
John really is a great interviewer, I think he can talk to anyone.
He’s such a Gemini! Natural communicator ❤️
John seems like such a nice guy considering he was such a sex symbol in the 80's!
Icons, both. What a great personality Billy Idol is. LOVE
And he looks AMAZING!!!!!!
Thank GOD I was born in the 70's and grew up in the 80' and watching MTV and DD and Billy idols are my favorite artist too.❤️❤️❤️❤️
Same!
Same for me!!!
My dad who died of cancer when I was 4 yrs old, the baby of four kids, used to to play the accordion…he entertained the women, as first born in 1942, during WW II. They would dress him up in beautiful suits and he would tap dance and sing for them! Lovvve this! ❤
Both are great, John is a great interviewer, he asks then let's Billy speak and tell his story. Super
Two legends chatting via Instagram!!!!! How AMAZING is that? They both look GREAT!!!!!!!!
OMG my one and only Billy Idol and John Taylor of Duran Duran! This is too good ❤️❤️💯💯
OMG -- the 2 loves of my adolescence. So surreal to not only see them together in this chat, but as older men. Love it!
Handsome men!!!!
I also loved them. My favourite two!
Billy Idol is long overdue his rightful place in the Rock And Roll of Fame. It's kind of like the US Judicial system: those who belong in there are kept out and those who don't deserve to be in there are just taking up space.
Both Billy AND Duran Duran!

Hungry Like the Wolf, Save a Prayer and Ordinary World are the Best Duran Duran Songs by far
Ordinary World & The Chauffeur are DD's very best in my opinion.
Not necessarily. I find “Save a prayer “ to be boring as hell. Not a huge fan of “Rio” either. Fortunately, we all have different tastes.
Love Billy's infectious smile and laugh!❤ Hes just an iconic talent!❤❤❤❤❤
Never been into Billy Idol’s music, but I have so much respect for him as an entertainer. Legend. Seems like an ace dude as well.

Enlightening. History of 80' music.

That makes two of us! If it weren't for this chat, I wouldn't have known.

When musicians were real musicians. John Taylor is still so cute at his 60 years of age.
*Hold Back The Rain* is easily the most underrated Duran Duran song of all time.
