@@mikefitzgerald2615 Kind of a complicated question. At risk of self promoting, I have a video called “What is a Norinco”, in which I break down the confusion of that label. That said, it was very likely exported by Norinco, and it may have been retroactively marked “Made in China by Norinco”, even if that wasn’t strictly true. Finally, regardless of the protestations of SKS nerds like myself, “Norinco” will always be an accepted colloquial term for any Chinese weapon, regardless of technical accuracy.

When I seen the shooters Bubba'd up SKS.. I believed it to be a Chinese Type 56 SKS. Question? Why wasn't there a scope mount on the SKS? Other thing this guy or someone else took off the bayonet fair enough to say?WHY? How do we know that this SKS wasn't made from a PARTS KIT? This 1 was definitely Vietnam Era SKS. Is it possible for someone or anyone to take the shot using iron sights?
1) There are not generally scope mounts on SKS pattern carbines, which is why this guy (or whoever he illegally purchased the rifle from) used an improvised setup. 2) Realistically, removing the bayonet from an SKS is probably prudent for most uses. Obviously collectors like myself wouldn’t dream of it, but functionally, it’s pretty much dead weight. Why not make the gun a little lighter, it’s not like he was going to bayonet charge a former president. 3) SKS’s are *almost never* made from parts kits, because they are legal for importation without modification. Parts kits exist because select fire or otherwise non-eligible firearms legally need to be broken down, and reassembled in the U.S. according to 922(r). 4) It’s certainly possible for someone to take a ~500 yard shot using SKS iron sights, during daylight conditions.
That’s a great question, and the answer is a little confusing. It comes down to is the fact that weapon labels have evolved over time, and the term “carbine” meant something different in the late 1940’s than it does today. At the time the SKS was developed, it was considered a carbine in comparison to larger battle rifles like the M1 Garand or SVT-40. In fact, the “K” in “SKS” stands for “карабин”, the Russian word for Carbine. That label stuck, and countries like China still classified their version as the Type 56 “Carbine”, despite that fact that it has a longer barrel than their Type 56 “Rifle” (which is just an AK). Long story short, the SKS is a carbine because SKS literally means: “Simonov’s Carbine, Semi-Automatic”. There are quite a few examples of this same phenomenon, ranging from historic to quite modern.
It really, really does. I’ve heard some people calling it the “Gary Busey Rifle”, and although I don’t mean to be unkind to Gary Busey… I see the resemblance in man and weapon.
