  • In this episode I am talking about what is required to setup bench grinder in workshop for best results. I go over a process of dressing and balancing grinding wheels. I am using my 6 inch Baldor 612R bench grinder as an example.

Hi Alexi and others that may happen upon this. good video. To balance the wheel with the method shown take out the screws and weights immediately. Put it on the balancer and let the heavy part of the wheel settle to the bottom.Draw a felt pen line straight down. When the wheel settles down you will get a feel for how out of balance it was. Now put the weights and screws back in with one screw EXACTLY OPPOSITE of the heavy part that you marked with felt pen. THAT ONE SCREW NEVER CHANGES--TIGHTEN IT AND DONT TOUCH IT AGAIN. Now take the remaining 2 weights and place them at equidistant thirds of the wheel. Now you can begin to balance. Take the other 2 weights and move them equally toward the one screw you set. Check balance if still heavy then move those same 2 screws closer to the main screw you set.. If the wheel is very out of balance the 2 weights will end up very close to the main screw you set. If the wheel was almost balanced--then the amount you move the 2 sliders and screws towards the main screw--will be slight. Using this method you can balance grinding wheels in less than 3 minutes.

Thank you, that was a comprehensive video on how to get a purchased machine, working properly. Most people purchase a bench grinder, set it up and accept that what they have is OK and normal. Grinders are a very dangerous tool and should be treated with respect. I find it hard to believe that these machines are allowed to be sold as is. Your method of balancing is by far the best I have seen also the balancing plates screwed to the wheel give a better fixture to the spindle. Once again, thank you.

Thank-You so much for making this video! Grinder manufacturers don't want to explain these things as it puts liability on them if someone goes home with a wheel imbedded in their skull.

Alexei you are a sick man you turned a simple task into a $ 1.5 k investment . Sir, I salute you for a job well done . I respect people like you that leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of perfection . Most people would stop at new but new wasn't good enough for you . The reason why Baldor has cheap rests and shields is most people replace them. So the money is in the quality of the tool even the stones are good but not the best . Some people want the best so they buy the most expensive , you want the best so you buy the most expensive and make it even better .
I purchased a calibration tool but had to make the calibration tool better . 99.9% of the world say you have OCD but not me I call you a perfectionist .

I would call the red plastic ring a bore reducer. Thanks for the video, gave some ideas.

Baldor is a great brand. Even the entry level model. Dress the wheel first then balance it.

basic question - is it common to simply grab the wheel with your hand to hold it in place while loosening the nuts? and does one do same for tightening nuts, simply hold the wheel with your hand?

Far too much too much time (aup to 7:55) spent talking about the tool rest plates. You didn't need to mill the slot underneath, since you bolted them down anyway. More importantly, you added a precise flat aluminium plate onto the horrible wobbly inaccurate weak stamped steel brackets. You extended the width of the tool rest, yet any pressure on the outside will simply bend/deflect the bracket and tilt the plate downwards on one side.
