- How to use Nestdrop to add generative visuals to your VJ sets. Special Guest Jason Fletcher aka Isosceles VJ, who helped with the creation of Nestdrop, shows us how Nestdrop works and how we can use it with Resolume to add generative visuals and real-time effects to our visuals and camera feeds.

Nestdrop allows you to perform with high-resolution high-fps visuals which react in realtime to the music and then broadcasts the video via Spout. Since the Milkdrop engine is at the core you can easily bring in your own Milkdrop presets. Use any audio source to drive the visuals, even live audio. We know that your attention bandwidth is already in high demand and so we've streamlined NestDrop to be simple and fast to use.

Much respect to the original MilkDrop, which was originally developed and open-sourced by Ryan Geiss.
Yes indeed! Respect to the shoulders we are standing on. Thanks for shouting that out, and thanks again for making this video with me!
Isosceles is my all time fave Visuals creator outstanding visuals creation and execution
He's great. check out his TH-cam channel too, he has some great stuff over there!
Excellent video, sharing these techniques is a real gift to the VJ community
Thanks for doing this video. For $50 and that going to someone who is obviously passionate about this stuff, this was an easy buy for me. Hoping to use this to run some visuals for our Halloween party! I subbed to Jason’s Patreon as well, and your content is so dope that I’d join yours too if you ever decide to run one 😊
Appreciate that Sean! And I know the Nest team appreciates it too. I have one but its basically a tip jar lol, I havent figured out anything cool to do with it yet so I dont advertise it. maybe someday! If you've got any suggestions for what you'd like to get out of a patreon I'm open to suggestions :)
Wild that it's been 2 years to date that I have been a NestDrop Midnight supporter. Probably my absolute favorite tool I have besides Resolume and (used to use) Synesthesia.
Dang you are an OG user! Definitely super fun to use. Synesthesia is great too. Lots of fun tools to play with
This is exactly what I was looking for !
I was using a lot of Milkdrop "Standalone" and Project M (open source continuation of Milkdrop) and totally overlooked Nestdrop.
I was working on my own VJ tool and even with recursive textures ... I could not quite get the Mildrop visuals I wanted.
But Nestdrop (through the superior OBS solution imho) allows for spout/syphon GPU sharing just the way i was looking for. Much love.
I will incorparate this into my tool as soon as possible ❤
I guess using it in Resolume is cool too :D
Glad it was helpful! I love me some resolume, but that's why we showed the OBS Process as well - lots of ways to nestdrop! And once you understand the basic flow, you can pipe that shit anywhere you want!
I have used milkdrop for over a decade, making my own shaders in it. I use milkdrop still in ways I do not see others, using the overlays I can throw at any time on beat, and program their motion across, in what speeds and directions, how they float and blend with the background. I can send through spout into Resolume and I used the number keys on my keyboard to trigger the logos etc in the ways I coded them. I just let the audio pickup like in Resolume into winamp to run the visualizer and keep the visuals audio reactive live. Synestasia allowed a few tweaks that you couldn't do in milkdrop, but I preferred MD over it still. I have had nestdrop midnight & classic for a while and it never really worked how fast and tight MD did for me in my work flow. Thanks for showing how you use it and ways nest can be used to supplement our VJ arsenals!
Would you happen to have any resources to help learn how to program your own shaders? I know of the ancient .milk documentation but curious if there are any e2e tutorials out there.
have you tried MilkDrop 3? ^ ^
@@legocreator768 3?? When was this released?
This is awesome! I've always loved Milkdrop but just learned about Nestdrop here. Thanks!
Oh very cool! hope it helps make things a little easier to implement. Thanks for checking it out
Jason Fletcher hanging with Sean Bowes! This is awesome. Was looking for you at MOS last month. Darryl is still the longest running visualist in the Hayden. You doing any spherical video any more? Still in the Northeast? Cheers to you both! Thanks for sharing this tutorial!
Small world eh?! Hope you're doing well Shawn!
I left the Charles Hayden Planetarium about a year ago, but I love that team and miss it! I've moved to Austin Texas to be closer to family. Not doing too much 360 video these days but still have all that weird knowledge tumbling around in my head and it's occasionally useful for 3D animation purposes. Cheers!
WoW nice guys
Thanks!
great video 🙂
Thank you! 😃
I think I seen this at a Dim Mak private show in DTLA.
bro this is awesome thank you
Glad you like it Sean. Great name btw
So many VJs just run Nestdrop and click a new source every song, lil strobe here and there, blackout after song. Boring. Gonna have to show them this one. Really amazing way to re-texture your content, thank you. Have you tried using Nvidia broadcast as the webcam source and then luma key?
True! Definitely gotta take it that extra step to make it unique. I havent tried that but its worth a shot. If you do, let us know how it works out!
Is anyone else not getting a 'Spout Filter' option within OBS>>filter>>effect filters?
My software is up to date. Do I need to download a plugin for OBS? I searched the subreddit but may have missed it.
Awesome video and thanks for the help!
Yes you need the SPOUT 2 OBS plugin. I just added it to the description! sorry I thought it was already linked there. Refresh and you should see it as the second link
@@SeanBowes Awesome -- appreciate the update!
Can make your resolume and nestdrop mix and send image to and output from resolume?
Yes that is what this video is about, make sure to watch to the end!
hi great staff! do u have some videos about using ai in creating content of mapped surfaces ?
Would love to buy this but no MAC or M1 compatibility :(
Check out synesthesia. Similar type of thing, piping visuals into shaders, and it’s cross-platform
I wish we could port NestDrop to Mac but it's a huge amount of work due the innards of the Milkdrop core engine, Syphon support, and GUI. So currently NestDrop is Windows only.
ndi in and out????
NDI output will be added to the next version of NestDrop, which we'll be releasing soon!
How can I get the trial version of Nestdrop software, and can I use it on windows system
You can get Nestdrop from their website, link is in the description of this video. Nestdrop Classic is Free (or like $0.01) and Nestdrop Midnight Edition is $50. Only works on Windows.
@@SeanBowes which one can I use between Nestdrop midnight edition and Nestdrop classic
You can use either one. Midnight has a few more features like midi control and direct output, they are listed on the website and there are videos about what each version can do on the website too
Just curious, are you running this on Windows 11? Can't get Nestdrop running on my new rig which is on 11. Works perfectly on my old Windows 10 rig tho. Wondering if that has something to do with it @SeanBowes @isoscelesVJ
Yeah I’ve got it running on 11. Check the subreddit and make sure you have spout and all that installed properly. That’s a common issue.
NestDrop Midnight have a known issue with the fullscreen output on Win11, but except that, it should work.
