Sachin Tendulkar's Opportunistic Saga
Our host told us this interesting story: about 10 years ago, Tendulkars and Narangs had come to Landour for a holiday. They were captivated by the surroundings. A business deal was struck: to build an exclusive by-invitation hotel. They found this nice 50 thousand sq ft property.
But there was a hitch: as per cantonment rules, no commercial structure could be created within 50 metres of a defence establishment. Tendulkar was confident that he would be able to bend the rules: after all, the Congress government had made him a nominated MP and conferred upon him the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of the country.
But A K Antony, the defence minister, was a hard nut to crack. He just would not agree.
Tendulkar came up with a fab story: that he would set up a Lawn Tennis Academy that would train players free of charge.
What a noble idea! But Antony could not be persuaded. Tendulkar had no close access to Gandhis or Manmohan Singh. The project remained standstill during the Congress regime.
Lo and behold! In May 2014, the government changed and Tendulkar's good friend from the cricketing world Arun Jaitley became the defence minister. Jaitley could not officially granted sanction as army rules are sacrosanct.
Jaitley apparently informally instructed the army commanders to let Tendulkar build a tennis academy that would train local aspirants pro bono!
By the end of 2014, the construction started full swing: day and night for months together. The people in the area say that they had not seen the kind of vehicles that carried the materials to build the mammoth structure.
When the scaffoldings were taken off in early 2016, the extent of the vast construction was revealed: it was not a Tennis Academy: yes, three Tennis Courts were there. But there were 56 well-appointed rooms, two swimming pools, gyms, helipads et al. No other 5 star hotel could match the opulence.
This was a By-invitation hotel. No riff-raff could enter the premises; only the guests of Tendulkar and Narang, and the top army officers, could have access. The military-like security guarded the premises. It was all happening in the name of a Tennis Academy.
A new army commander apparently took exception to it and took up the matter with the headquarters. Arun Jaitly was no more the defence minister. The army decided to move the court. The court gave the stay on the operations.
Narang moved the apex court against the lower court order. Tendulkar met Manohar Parrikar, the defence minister, to salvage the situation. Jaitly was the big boss; Parrikar could not pointedly ignore Tendulkar's request.
Jaitley's pressure must also have been there. But Parrikar could not go against the wishes of the army too. He wanted to save his own skin. An interesting thing happened: someone from the defence minister's office leaked to the media that Sachin Tendulkar had met the defence minister to salvage the structure at Landour. That made the headlines in the national media.
Tendulkar was red-faced. He called for a press conference saying the premises at Landour was owned by his friend Sanjay Narang and he went there only as a guest. After Tendulkar openly ditched his friend, the army went full throttle in the Supreme Court.
The apex court concurred with the army and ordered the pulling down of the structure. An estimated Rd 500 crore of the Tendulkar-Narang duo went down the drain!
I made it a point to go and see the ruins. We must thank the Army and the apex court for saving the quiet hill station from this brazen commercialization against all established norms.
