It's unironically been a great fucking year for JRPGs, we got a new Xenoblade Chronicles AND a new Star Ocean; I cannot stress how fucking insane this is. In my mind these are BIG players with a BIG legacy so for both to churn out new entries that are well-regarded is a major win for JRPGs in 2022.
And to think, heading into the year, we didn’t know when or what half of these games were! Xenoblade was literally announced in Q1 and released merely a few months later!
SO happy to hear about Suikoden 1 + 2, haven't owned/ played them since the PS1, sold my mint copies for nice money many years ago, can't wait to own and play again.
I was so confused when I heard David’s voice while listening to this while I was getting ready. I was pretty sure I wasn’t watching his channel but there he was. Love him! Lol
This year has been spoiling us RPG fans, it feels like xD Of course, Xenoblade 3, Star Ocean The Divine Force and Atelier Sophie 2 get a huge stamp of recommendation from me! I've been loving the new Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, but I don't think anyone needs me to tell them Pokemon exists xD A lot of these are definitely gonna find a place on my personal wishlist (or already had one)
My recommendations here are Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (GOTY), Trails From Zero, Triangle Strategy, and Persona 5 Royal. All amazing, wildly different games!
@@kongdoo1226 cold steel is pretty good in my opinion but the story spans over 4 games so you’re in for several hundred hours if you want the full experience so can’t really safely recommend it to everyone

I'm amazed I've been able to play at least 4 of the games on this list. Xenoblade 3 is definitely the highlight for me, and my game of the year. Absolute masterpiece! Another JRPG this year that deserves some attention is Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi. It's a dungeon-crawler with an insanely-customisable party, and a dark, gritty atmosphere. Made by the same team behind the Spirit Hunter games, so it's very much in that same style.
@@kr1me2000 Not even remotely accurate. It's on-par with the first as one of Nintendo's best games. Xenoblade 2, on the other hand, is easily the worst game in the franchise, and a lazy, cynical product with none of what makes Xenoblade fun or engaging in it. They literally made a tedious, poorly-written shounen/ecchi game with gatcha and waiting mechanics, and slapped the Xenoblade name on the front cover. It's the most insulting and unnecessary remake I've ever played, and Torna shows just what the game should've been. Xenoblade 3, on the other hand, addresses every problem with 2, while salvaging all its good ideas and improving upon them to give us a game with the quality standards of 1, a combat system that surpasses 2 and even Torna, and the best side-content since Xenoblade X.
@@kr1me2000 Dude, there are literally several longtime JRPG fans in these comments for whom Xenoblade 3 was their GOTY. It also got almost universal praise from critics, which is unusual for a JRPG. If it's not a style of game that is fun for you -- maybe you didn't like the story, or the characters, or the combat -- that's understandable. Not every game is made for every gamer.
What an amazing run down. The only bad part was I now have about 8 games sitting in my steam shopping cart. LOL ... It's scary that so many good games come out and are so easily overlooked these days. Thanks for the quality content as usual.
That is quite the list of interesting games, I can vouch for Soul Hackers 2, Live-A-Live, Triangle Strategy, Trails from Zero, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and Persona 5 Royal being excellent games and I would like to play all of the others. There really have been a lot of great JRPGs released this year and I am eager to play all of them. It's just a matter of having the funds to afford them and the time to play them. Even if it takes me a long time to play all of this year's great JRPGs, I still plan on doing it eventually.
Any other madmen do the Golden Path on Triangle strategy their first run? I had done enough mock battles to make everyone vote how I wanted so that was never an issue. However those final few battles you have in taking that path are absolutely nuts when it comes to the difficulty spike since you don't have all the extra characters from NG+.
We haven’t seen this many fantastic rpgs since the SNES era. Every game on this list is great, and that’s just this year. In the first 2 months of next year we’re already getting Fire Emblem, One Piece and Octopath 2. On a side note, I’d love to see the GBA Golden Sun games get an Octopath style hd upgrade.
not really a "Japanese" rpg but everyone should try Lost Eidolons. It is a tactical rpg which I would describe as a 3D realistic version of Fire Emblems. The gameplay is a bit dull (albeit maybe because of me being used to more complexed RPGs) but the story and characters are great. The story and characters was enough for me to finish the game despite the gameplay being simple. The voice acting was also awesome!
My top 5 game this year is just JRPGs: -Xenoblade Chronicles 3 -Elden Ring (Yes, I would say its a JRPG) -Star Ocean the Divine Force -Trails from Zero -Live A Live
great list as always myself have been mostly playing indie games which i was behind though if dlc counts i loved cuphead delicious last course another game i had a lot of fun with was gunvolt 3 and right now im quite enjoying cardfight vanguard dear days and playing pokemon violet
Just bought Persona 5 Royal on steam for 30% off! I've never played Persona 5, but persona 4 golden was my first jrpg ever so I'm really excited for this game to take up my next couple of months!
Small remark: Live-a-Live was actually released years *AFTER* Final Fantasy IV. More than three years later actually. FFIV was released less than a year after the Super Famicom launch date after all.
I actually posted a poll on the community tab about this! Would love to see your vote/thoughts on there! There should be chapter markers on the video already. Is that not showing up?
If possible id like your suggestion on which of the following to buy since im kinda short of money atm Ys origin+ ys oath of felgana+ disgaea 5 Digimon cyber sleuth Persona 4
Great list. I have lots of ideas for my next rpg now. I recently put 130 hours into persona on switch (haven't actually finished my first playthrough yet) and about 70 hours into xenoblade 3 (also not finished). Both are amazing games. I played the triangle strategy demo a while back and fire emblem three hopes demo as well and I look forward to eventually starting them soon as well. I wanted to ignore harvestella, but it honestly seems pretty fun so I might have to give it another look. Really it's a good year to be a square enix fan though so thanks for the recommendations guys.
If Elden Ring hadn't come out this year, Soul Hackers 2 would've been my GOTY and im not even really a fan of JRPG's. In fact it's why im looking into them now
@@BacklogBattle Jack Move and maybe Harvestella. Im not a huge fan of regular fantasy so most JRPG's haven't caught my eye. Something about Soul Hackers' cyberpunk world and the superbly written adult characters really hooked me, and I don't see much else like it yet
I just want something remotely similar to the combat systems and how awesome it was like scarlet nexus...that game was a huge surprise for me!! Or another tales of games but damn scarlet was soo good that I keep playing every now and then sooo good
I’m super behind in my backlog lol. I’m playing persona 5 for the first time on the switch. I have triangle strategy and live a live but haven’t played them. I tried to order diofield but it got back ordered and canceled. So I might pick it up possibly with a sale. I’m interested in the atelier series, xenoblade and harvestella.
This is an excellent list, love the love for The Diofield Chronicle especially!:D I'm currently considering adding Soul Hackers 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 or Harvestella to my Christmas wishlist, but it's so tough to decide...I might just have to toss a coin 😅
A lot of these games look good but every time I checked a title out on Switch or Steam, they're usually in the AAA-price range. I was hoping to see some cheaper options that retailed at $30-40 and then pick them up on sale at sub-$20.
JRPGs tend to be an expensive genre ($50-60, and sometimes with DLC tacked on) since the fanbase is so devoted -- but some of these games will go on sale pretty soon. In the price-range you mentioned, I highly reconmmend Chained Echoes ($25), a great homage to old-school 2D JRPGs, with a surprisingly affecting story.
Atelier Ryza 3 is on the way so I appreciate the love Sophie 2 got considering it didn't sold as well. Still will have to finish it AND Ryza 2. Also shout-out to Kiseki Nut and other collaborators in this video. Nicely done 👌
11 Harvestella 10 Trails from Zero (a lot better than coldsteel) 09 Tactics Ogre Reborn 08 Strange Paradise FF (meme game but fun) 07 The DioFIeld Chronicles 06 Souls Hacker 05 Atelier Sophie 2 (Ryza still better) 04 Triangle Strategy 03 Star Ocean 6 02 Voice of Cards 01 Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Great video! 2022 has been an interesting year for JRPGs. Now that I've seen what has come out there is kind of only one AAA JRPG that came out this year, Xenoblade 3. Luckily, I enjoy smaller and indie titles as well.
Persona 5 Royal: Best jRPG ever made. There are different games with different gameplay mechanics that you personally may like more, but there is no game that blends music, artstyle, a story with a deep meaning and fun combat as good as this one. And yes "I have no time and want to rush threw everything, FASTER FASTER FASTER" gamers may dislike the dialogue, but if you play games to finish them, RPG is not your Genre anyway. If you ask me, "rushing threw the game" goes against everything that PC / Console Videogames want to be. An experience, not and ending.
Disagree. I'm a pretty big fan of SMT and the way P5R aggressively disrespects your time is horrible. I don't want to rush through games (if they're good at least) but I also don't want there to be 10 lines of dialogue for every action that happens on screen endlessly and needlessly. It's the most flawlessly polished turd in the history of the genre. Beautiful audio and visuals with piss-poor writing that anyone that values their time will resent.
Essential info to not be severely disappointed by P5R; The ratio of reading/cutscenes/dialogue selection/visual novel to gameplay is about 10 to 1. The game is also 100 hours long with C tier writing. Imo you'll always be better off enjoying a half dozen other titles with that time. Hardcore overrated weeb stuff. If I sound salty, I am, I like the SMT games and have been hearing hype about P5 for years.
hm... ^^ i like the list for the most part, but i feel like mentioning persona 5 royal as cheating since the game has been available for quite a while now and not just this year. but you have to fill the list somehow ^^
I could’ve easily omitted it from the list, but I’d argue that Persona coming to other platforms outside of PlayStation is as big of an event as any release of the games mentioned. Also, if you really count the games, the list actually has more than 20 games 😉
BUY XENOBLADE 3 THE GOTY also why'd you make this, my buy list is already too big... 😥 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is currently $30 and even though it's more of a visual novel than a JRPG, but I think it's a must buy after playing it for a few hours! As for a cheap traditional JRPG buy NEO: The World Ends with You, was easily my GOTY last year and is $20 right now

If it's not a style of game that is fun for you -- maybe you didn't like the story, or the characters, or the combat -- that's understandable. Not every game is made for every gamer.
Very solid list, thank you.
Thanks for watching!
What an amazing run down. The only bad part was I now have about 8 games sitting in my steam shopping cart. LOL ... It's scary that so many good games come out and are so easily overlooked these days. Thanks for the quality content as usual.
You’re welcome! Let me know how some of your experiences with these games go!
Such amazing recommendations! Triangle Strategy is my game of the year, and in my top 5 games of all time.
I’m readying my review of Triangle Strategy right now! Might come out next week
Steam's wishlist is a godsend for this time of year
There's a lot of great JRPG's on the Switch!
Soul Hackers 2 is so underrated.
I commend you big time! I still have nightmares of that Wolffort fight where you have the option to burn down the houses!
I know this is an old video, but I can't help it. I see Eunie I click.
THE trails guy didn't recommend trails, I'm paralyzed.
I loved Triangle Strategy and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is my game of the year. There are so many great games on this list, my poor backlog
Absolutely amazing guests and video.
My top 5 game this year is just JRPGs:
-Xenoblade Chronicles 3
-Elden Ring (Yes, I would say its a JRPG)
-Star Ocean the Divine Force
-Trails from Zero
-Live A Live
Elden Ring is not a JRPG. Demon Souls and Dark Souls created a new genre, the soulslike.
It's NOT a JRPG
New to your channel great video !! Btw the Kiseki nut channel is amazing his videos are always on point
He’s one of my closest friends! He’s really awesome!
Man a bunch of great creators in one video. But Taylor man this isn't a review didn't need to go so hard here lol
Wait until the Awards! There's even more incredible creators there 😉
@@BacklogBattle Oh yeah I remember how good last years were
Loved this video! What a year! Triangle Strategy has definitely been a highlight for me and I can’t wait to check out Xenoblade Chronicles 3 soon!
Excellent video happy holidays food coma and JRPGs here I come! lol
great list as always myself have been mostly playing indie games which i was behind
though if dlc counts i loved cuphead delicious last course another game i had a lot of fun with was gunvolt 3 and right now im quite enjoying cardfight vanguard dear days and playing pokemon violet
Thank you for that! I must’ve confused the fact with something else! I’m making the necessary corrections
first(?). yay JRPGs! and I enjoy when you collaborate with other creators.
Thank you alex i will be using this list to get back into JRPG again
The Dio feels like pillars of eternity gameplay
Thanks for this list. May I suggest time stamps for future compilations?
I actually posted a poll on the community tab about this! Would love to see your vote/thoughts on there!
There should be chapter markers on the video already. Is that not showing up?
@@BacklogBattle Omg I just noticed tthem now. I guess because they're smaller the highlight was hard to find initially. My bad! Watched anyway!
Awesome games can't wait to play some of them
Just one of these games would've kept me occupied for the rest of the year
That game has been Xenoblade Chronicles 3
If possible id like your suggestion on which of the following to buy since im kinda short of money atm
Ys origin+ ys oath of felgana+ disgaea 5
Digimon cyber sleuth
Persona 4
Skip Digimon. I like those games but they are perpetually cheap and just fine but nothing to write home about
i can only say get ys origin thats such a great game with a amaizing ost
I love Persona 4, so I’d get that!
Thanks guys ill get ys origin and persona 4
Should have added mario and rabbids sparks of hope. that game was awesome
Glad voice of cards made it. I was especially a fan of the second one.
They’re well made! Love the soundtracks too!
If Elden Ring hadn't come out this year, Soul Hackers 2 would've been my GOTY and im not even really a fan of JRPG's. In fact it's why im looking into them now
Awesome! Is there any in this list that’s piquing your interest?
@@BacklogBattle Jack Move and maybe Harvestella. Im not a huge fan of regular fantasy so most JRPG's haven't caught my eye. Something about Soul Hackers' cyberpunk world and the superbly written adult characters really hooked me, and I don't see much else like it yet
You’re gonna backlog my backlog, hopefully there’s a mention on if these games are on Black Friday sale.
Unfortunately the sales are still being updated today (vid came out yesterday), but at least you’ll have a list of games to look for!
good video, thank you for the recommendations
I just want something remotely similar to the combat systems and how awesome it was like scarlet nexus...that game was a huge surprise for me!! Or another tales of games but damn scarlet was soo good that I keep playing every now and then sooo good
Here’s hoping for a Scarlet Nexus sequel then!
It just hit me that Persona 5 is literally the GTA V of the JRPG world
I’m super behind in my backlog lol. I’m playing persona 5 for the first time on the switch. I have triangle strategy and live a live but haven’t played them. I tried to order diofield but it got back ordered and canceled. So I might pick it up possibly with a sale. I’m interested in the atelier series, xenoblade and harvestella.
This is an excellent list, love the love for The Diofield Chronicle especially!:D
I'm currently considering adding Soul Hackers 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 or Harvestella to my Christmas wishlist, but it's so tough to decide...I might just have to toss a coin 😅
XC3 is the GOTY nominee so that one
i have to say this list is a great one
And to think that it’s only games released in 2022!
tactics ogre his party is so much bigger , party ideal 4 a 6
A lot of these games look good but every time I checked a title out on Switch or Steam, they're usually in the AAA-price range.
Thank you alot for this video.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 proves that Pokémon V/S could have totally made open world work much better but GameFreak was just too lazy
I think there’s more nuance than that, but I agree that the latest kerfuffle with Violet and Scarlet is next level
Atelier Ryza 3 is on the way so I appreciate the love Sophie 2 got considering it didn't sold as well. Still will have to finish it AND Ryza 2.
Also shout-out to Kiseki Nut and other collaborators in this video. Nicely done 👌
11 Harvestella
10 Trails from Zero (a lot better than coldsteel)
09 Tactics Ogre Reborn
08 Strange Paradise FF (meme game but fun)
07 The DioFIeld Chronicles
06 Souls Hacker
05 Atelier Sophie 2 (Ryza still better)
04 Triangle Strategy
03 Star Ocean 6
02 Voice of Cards
01 Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Great video! 2022 has been an interesting year for JRPGs. Now that I've seen what has come out there is kind of only one AAA JRPG that came out this year, Xenoblade 3. Luckily, I enjoy smaller and indie titles as well.
Holy collabs, Batman!
😉
I remember that Soul Hacker 2 will not be released on switch. Or is there any update that i missed?
It still isn’t coming to Switch
Persona 5 Royal: Best jRPG ever made. There are different games with different gameplay mechanics that you personally may like more,
but there is no game that blends music, artstyle, a story with a deep meaning and fun combat as good as this one.
Why is disgaea so underrated
pls pls pls upload list of recommendation for solo character jrpgs
im tired of party-based jrpgs
What game is the blond hair in the thumbnail? Thank you!
Xenoblade Chronicles 3!
@@BacklogBattle Thanks for answering brother!
Why no Valkyrie Elysium? Is it bad?
shout out to neo the world ends with you and digimon survive see if you can get those great games I recently beat.
17:45 from what game is this? 17:45
Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes!
Does anyone know who the girl with the black and green jacket on the thumbnail is
Eunie from Xenoblade 3
what game are the characters of the thumbnail from?
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Triangle Strategy!
Well, this isn't going to help my backlog...
ser brasileiro é complicado, todos 200 reais pra cima KKKK, tá louco brother
Essential info to not be severely disappointed by P5R; The ratio of reading/cutscenes/dialogue selection/visual novel to gameplay is about 10 to 1. The game is also 100 hours long with C tier writing. Imo you'll always be better off enjoying a half dozen other titles with that time. Hardcore overrated weeb stuff. If I sound salty, I am, I like the SMT games and have been hearing hype about P5 for years.
hm... ^^
i like the list for the most part, but i feel like mentioning persona 5 royal as cheating since the game has been available for quite a while now and not just this year. but you have to fill the list somehow ^^
I could’ve easily omitted it from the list, but I’d argue that Persona coming to other platforms outside of PlayStation is as big of an event as any release of the games mentioned.
Also, if you really count the games, the list actually has more than 20 games 😉
The fact fire emblem three houses only available on switch really makes me angry, why limit such a good game to only certain console ffs
I refuse to support Squeenix for their ridiculous pricing. However I'll check out the rest (already got Trails from Zero tho, great game)
Which ones are you thinking of checking out?
Is Elden Ring technically a JRPG?
It is not, by virtue of the fact that it is categorized as a Souls-like. JRPGs have very specific types of gameplay.
Many mediocre games in 2022 tho, I think there are just a couple which i would consider good
Would you like to name them?
never could really warm up with the atelier series it is just too much crafting and collecting, the waifus on the other hand are great though
BUY XENOBLADE 3 THE GOTY
also why'd you make this, my buy list is already too big... 😥
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is currently $30 and even though it's more of a visual novel than a JRPG, but I think it's a must buy after playing it for a few hours!
As for a cheap traditional JRPG buy NEO: The World Ends with You, was easily my GOTY last year and is $20 right now
LOL apologies for making your backlog worse 😅
@@BacklogBattle it’s quite alright! I’ll eventually get through it 🤞
