A water softener is meant to remove the water hardness caused by a combination of Calcium and Magnesium by a process called Ion Exchange. This media called Resin in the water softener is charged with sodium ions or sodium chloride contained in the brine tank during the regeneration process. The Calcium and Magnesium that comes in contact with resin beads are exchanged with sodium in the resin thus converting hard water into soft water. ground water from bore well, tube well hand pup, and wells are by and large hard in nature. This causes scales to form inside pipes, water heaters, heating elements, or boilers. The scale shortens the life of the products and also affects our hair and skin badly and also raises your electricity bills.
Soft water will only reduce hardness in water but will not change the existing TDS levels in the water. That's why using a RO for drinking water is necessary. RO or Reverse Osmosis is a water treatment process that removes contaminants from water by using pressure to force water molecules through a semi-permeable membrane to remove all unwanted particles, contaminants, sediments, salts, and also minerals. RO works by using a pressure pump that pushes water through a series of filters such as a carbon filter, sediment filter, RO membrane, and activated carbon post filter. This RO process ensures that all impurities are filtered out, providing good-tasting drinking water. RO filters out 90% of dissolved pollutants through their semi-permeable membrane.
Reverse Osmosis is considered the best purification process through which you can effectively reduce and remove harmful organic and inorganic contaminants. It also removes lead, salts, and minerals from other contaminants such as arsenic, copper, and radioactive contaminants. It is also very effective in removing bacteria and viruses from water. In my case, water is purified by water purifier..normal one. But the water is hard. So what do you suggest to use? Should i use water softener with water purifier? Or simply replace it by r.o. system

Ion Exchange process is to remove hardness, and once water is softened, it gives great benefits to protecting appliances, Sanitaryware, preventing hairfall and skin damage, etc.
Water also contains many other physical , chemical, and biological contaminents. If all of them are in order, then no issues. Else, only softening might not help.
A detailed water report from certified water testing labs will help in understanding the level of contaminents and basis that we can know if only softening should be enough or not.

@satishbradar, this water through water softener is for utility purposes only and not for drinking. You have to use RO for drinking purpose.

@Rahul Attri, yes technically RO can do all that a Water Softener also does. That means it reduces water hardness and also purify water from all other contaminants whereas a water softener only acts on water hardness.

RO filtration is not good for our body because our body needs minerals which is removed through RO filtration. The municipality tap water is good for health only it should be filtered through primary filter and the pass the UV light system.
@@bedelopes4823 Quality of water at a place should be the main factor to decide the kind of treatment that we should do, before we consume the water.
Reverse Osmosis ( RO ) system does reduce some minerals but it is necessary to use RO where the TDS of water is high ( above 300 - 400 ppm) like in case of borewell / ground water.
Municipal water can be subjected to basic filteration along UV process and consumed as TDS is already within acceptable levels ( below 300 ppm).

If water is meant for use other than drinking and if can do regular maintenence of the water purification system and also invest on it then go for ion exchange technology based hard water Softeners otherwise water conditioners are good. if its drinking water then go for RO.
