    Oh Erik, you have done it again. I have a friend who had a dead Aussie cedar tree which he cut down for furniture wood,. he ruined a saw blade on it because because it had grown a round a bomb. Yes a real small bomb.

      Wow that is insane. I cut through a hidden 45 cal. bullet once on the tablesaw. You never know what you might find. Once in some Beautiful Walnut I hit several nails from where a clothesline or some such thing had been nailed. Much love to Australia and your family. Hope everyone is doing well.

    Erik,great job. I to turn a lot of glue ups so I use carbide cutters. My I ask why I never see you use theme.

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have used them but returned them because I did not like the finish they left. I can get a better finishing cut with traditional tools. I might use a carbide tool in the future for roughing or for inside of a canisters as a scraper. Carbide tools are all scrapers and I like cutters.

    You really should use a metal lathe for turning steel like that Erik. LOL! What an unfortunate surprise, I thought it was a knot or a crack when I first heard the ticking sound. That must have done quite a number on your tools.
    It turned out very nice in the end. I have a stick of Mahogany that is only 3/4 X 3 1/2 so no way to make something like this. I think I'll cut it up and include it in a segmented project. I love the "Fire" that Mahogany gives when finished. Nice job as usual Erik. May we have more please?

      Thank you Gil. The tool I was using is very hard and did not get a very bad nick I was lucky I stopped right away. The fire in Mahogany is amazing, hope your piece provides some fire to a nice segmented piece.

    Very nice end product. Nails can be a bitch on tools.

    Safety first boys and girls. You should turn between centers when roughing out like this and not at 1200rpms but slower, once it’s round and balance you can turn up the speed.

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good idea Bill especially if you are a new turner. In my defense I did have it securely mounted to my face plate with six high quality screws while balancing and roughing. I wanted to be ready to make the mortice on the end for my scrolling jaw chuck so I did not feel the need to bring in my tailstock because this is a tiny bowl which as I said before was very well held to the faceplate with long screws. The exciting part was that in the center of the glueup that I got from a window and door shop was the 1/4 crown staple. Thank you for the comment and I should have pointed out why I did not bring in the tailstock like I would normally do on a larger piece.

    Eric, great video as always. I have a trend and was having the same issue. 2 things to check - I got a replacement battery but still had issues. I opened up the top and found debris in the fan. I cleaned it out and been working great every since. Thanks for sharing your work.

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      All kinds of things, Sell, gift, use, abuse, set aside for future sales or gifting. Right now I have lots of bowls and platters that I need to market or take to a sidewalk sale or commission store. Thanks for asking

    E, I have meant to ask you, sir: have you ever worked with that very hard African wood called
    babenga (spelling?)...? It's a greyish to olive dark wood as I remember and quite dense... Arthur

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bubinga and yes I have i had a very small piece of it that I turned into a pen and it was brittle and hard as heck but polished up beautifully!

    Erik, nice bowl. Question for you: I was always told not to use a roughing spindle gouge on a bowl as it might contact end grain and snap the tang. Was that not an issue here because it was a glued up block?

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the outside it is just a large spindle but on the inside of a bowl it is a real no no!
