Having used this combination with a GH5 for more than a month, other notes I'd like to share is that at widest focal length, there will be some weird softening and distortion to the edges of the frame. And the Sigma 18-35mm also has quite a hefty weight, so if you're always shooting things hand held, or need to travel around carrying this camera, you will get tired quickly carrying this thing and your hand might shake while shooting because of it. So I'd opt for native lenses when going on shoots where I need to walk around a lot. Another is, unlike Leica or Olympus lenses, the lens flare can be quite pronounced if you're shooting into the sun or strong sunlight, with green streaks running across your frame. Can be great if you like the stylized flare look, but otherwise, be careful. The aperture can't also be closed more than f/11 so be ready to use ND filters or bumping your shutter speed up if you're shooting under the sun. Otherwise, the lens is quite sharp compared to lots of native m4/3 lenses, and quite versatile for what it offers (zoom range with really low aperture). These are from my experience from my short time using it, so probably need to use it more to know what it is actually capable of.
Thank you for sharing your experiences, there is a lot of optical imperfections at 18mm, especially at F1.8. Those usually need to be fixed in post. Overall I also prefer using native lens for all-round use and this my special purpose setup.
I’ve been using mine for a couple weeks now on the G9. For stills it’s pretty decent, for video not so much. A few things I’ve noticed: 1. The 24-105 L works in good light. In low light it will focus but the camera won’t take a picture. You can hear the shutter go off but it doesn’t record to memory card. 2. The 35mm 1.4 L II shot wide open at f1 is very soft and hazy. Doesn’t seem to reach critical focus under any light. 3. The 40mm pancake, the 135 L and the 70-200 L II all work great at any Aperture and any light.
Wondering how well this works with a 75-300 EF iii, if I could get some auto focus and the long end to be f/4 that’s be great but the lens already has some CA
Thanks for the video! I've used the Metabones Speed Booster 0.64 XL with Sigma 18-35 on Panasonic G7 for a year. I have just bought the 0.71x Metabones Ultra for the GH5s. Speed Booster + Sigma 18-35 is a killer combo even on cheap cameras like the G7 (that I have retired a few months ago). I didn't try the Viltrox but I would rather pay more to have an excellent all-around performance from Metabones speed booster even though it is ridiculously expensive.
You're welcome! I was watching some comparisons of the Metabones and Viltrox and Viltrox seemed to be good enough for me, although I intend try Metabones as well, since I have to buy GH5 / GH5S for some production purposes. Thank you for watching!
Make sure to buy 0.71x Metabones Ultra for the GH5s as it vignettes a lot with the 0.64x. On the other hand, if you buy the GH5, the 0.64x speed booster works fine with the Sigma 18-35. On the other hand, Metabones recommends the 0.71x adapter for APS-C lens like Sigma 18-35 and the 0.64x for the full frame lens. Learned all this by heart after watching hundreds of videos :D
After watching several videos on the improved AF in the G9, I ordered one that will arrive on Friday. It seems to have better autofocus than the GH5 from the 2.0 firmware. So, I'm looking forward to shooting with it. I also own the ZCam E2C, the BMPCC4K, the Metabones x.71 speedbooster, as well as the Sigma 18-35. Along with Canon glass and more native MFT lenses. But, with G9's AF and stabilization, I'm looking forward to using it as a run and gun camera.
I've got the G9 and the Viltrox EF-M2. I find the looseness (play) of both mounts to be a real turn-off. I put it down to the fact that the unit is so cheap. There's sloppy movement between it and the lens as well as it and the body. So this adds up to not such a great experience when focusing manually. The autofocus in two of my canon lenses is no where near as good as you had with the sigma. I have more lenses to test with and I will upgrade the firmware before commenting further about that. Overall it was the adaptor I could afford. The I'm not going to pay US$700 for a lens adaptor. I am also impressed that Viltrox has a nice piece of glass in there that maintains clarity. My Canon EF 135 f/2 les is a good test for that. The G9 is amazing, as usual. I love using it. The Viltrox allows me to use my beloved Canon glass, so it makes me happy. I hope that Viltrox will tighten up it's tolerances with a new release. I would buy it if they did.
Love your videos. But was wondering if you still have the Panasonic GH5 and does the Vitrox work ok with it. And can the Canon 15-85 lens work with it.
im thinking on getting the G9 because overall it is a complete package in terms of photography features and video features and quality, my only downside is the size of the sensor in terms of low light performance and such, does this improve the G9 ? i was looking at canon cameras but none of them have the same features of the G9, so right now the G9 is top 1 option for me.
hey i have a question, when you mount the lens on the adapter does it do the click sound? i bought my speedboster and received today, but whent i tried to mount my 18-35 it does not lock completly, doensn't do the click like my other spedbooster fo M mounts. i have the same adapter and lens you have.
I too have recently bought the Viltrox but have only tried it with my Canon L lenses (I still have my 5Dii, but don't use it all that much any more). I have to say I've been very pleasantly surprised by the performance - it doesn't appear to impair sharpness to any appreciable degree. I wasn't expecting much from AF performance, so the fact it works at all, albeitly slowly - is a bit of a bonus. I can't for the life in me imagine what would make the Metabones alternative worth around five times the cost of the Viltrox, but I haven't been able to make a comparison. I was considering whether or not to jump the MfT ship due to the increasing costs of some very ordinary lenses [or very costly ones] from the OEMs. I mean what the hell is the point of a constant f4 zoom [especially when it's hugely expensive] on an MfT body? The idea of an 18-35 f1.8 x 2 x 0.71 is appealing however, in spite of the weight - considering the price. That works out roughly in equivalence terms to 25.5-50mm and f2.4 - still a very useful optic to have especially if you like to isolate portraits/groups [and I do]. I'm now seriously considering buying a G9 or an EM1 mkii I find it quite refreshing you don't fall into the bullshit territory of many MfT shooters who are more than happy to accept equivalence in focal length, but insist it doesn't apply to the effect of equivalence on aperture either in DoF, or overall light gathering [and therefore noise]. Nice also to see Prague and Bratislava prominently featured in your videos - two of my favourite cities to visit. This is only the second of your videos I've seen, but I'm going to go ahead and subscribe. Thanks.
Thank you, I appreciate your subscription! I agree that optical performance of this adapter is very good. Equivalent myths are mostly spread by Olympus ambassadors, I have no reason to embrace that. Option to use speedbooster is very interesting, although Leica 12-60mm F2.8-4 is usually enough for me on G9, unless I'm doing something special.
I've got the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 and although it's a sharp lens it's also quite heavy and I do find the inability to get decent subject isolation except toward the telephoto end a bit limiting for a 'premium' optic. The other thing about it is that it currently needs repair - I dropped it from about 3ft [didn't properly close my camera-rucksack. tchhh...] and although it's built like a tank, the mount is laughably [I didn't laugh] flimsy and sheered while the GX8 it was attached to didn't have a mark on it. The lens I walk around with most is the Panny 14-140mm. Not fast, not particularly sharp, but for the sort of lens it is, pretty good for general purpose work and incredibly versatile and convenient. I tend to use fast primes for anything more demanding, but the idea of an f1.2 zoom is enticing in spite of the heft.
There will be 10-25mm F1.7 zoom lens available next year, but it will also be very expensive. Panasonic will rather meet demands for bright aperture lenses by introducing full frame Lumix S line.
Yes I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see that lens at £1500+ and it will be large. At which point comparisons with the 24-105 on the S1 will be quite salient - even if (as I suspect) that’s going to be an f4 or even f3.5-5.6. I’m looking forward to seeing what the S1R in particular offers - its resolution does suggest 8k bursts may be possible in any aspect ratio. Could be a killer feature to distinguish it from the pack.
I also expect it to be the second most expensive lens for M43 after Leica 200mm F2.8. I can't tell the aperture of 24-105mm because of the NDA, but if shallow depth of field is priority, S1 / S1R will still be better option IMO. I am pretty sure that 8K will not be in any mirrorless camera until 2020.
If you want to use vintage lenses tape the ef-m2 to body connectors. This is fantastic tool with Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon, Tessar etc. When you add the GH5 IBIS those old lenses becomes a treasures.
A very good review. I find the combination of the Viltrox and a 50mm f1.8 Canon STM lens, as show briefly in your video, to be a very good portrait lens, making a 71mm f1.3 equivalent for the bokeh look, at much less than an f1.2 Nocticron! The Canon 70-210mm f2.8 becomes approximately a 50-180mm f2 lens too. A very useful accessory.
Thanks for doing this review. I always trust your videos. I am waiting for the 10-25mm Panasonic lens but now thinking the Signa 18-25 with Speedbooster could be a better, more versatile, choice? Do you think this combination would be good as a travel lens? My thinking is to use this combination as a daily lens that I would leave on the camera and will also work in low light. I would never use it for vlogging type video but do want to use this for travel photos and video with a G95. My only other lens is a 50-200mm. This combination is heavier than the Panasonic. Do you think it is too heavy for travel? I appreciate your thoughts!! Thanks again!
Thank you, I have talked about that in my 10-25 review. If you have the budget for 10-25 it is much better choice than 18-35 with speedbooster overall. 10-25mm F1.7 is one of the most impressive lenses that I have ever tested.
Thank you. 2 questions. It seems it does the same job so why oh why is the Meta Bones so incredible expensive in comparison. ALSO. What video do you have the explains the best way to use the auto focus. I have GH5 and GH6. I would really like to see it. Is there any chance you'll do one for the GH6. I'd pay for that video. I would. Thank again.
I can't answer the first question. To be honest, buying camera form a different brand, such as Sony, is much easier than struggling with Panasonic AF, so I gave up on DFD a long time ago.
Hi i bought this adapter too, but recognized, that every lens, longer than 25mm can not focus to infinity on my BMPCC. I tried all these lenses (highspeed primes from Zeiss, Leica, Nikon with adapters to Canon EF) with a plain adapter (without optical elements) everything is fine. I doublechecked with two different Canon DSLRs, focus to infinity is no problem. Only with this adapter, it’s not possible. Do you know, if there is there a way to adjust the adapter for this reason? I know that metabones speedbooster can be adjusted.
Hi! I know this is an old video from you, but I want to know what is your advice about Sigma 18-35 f1.8 and Olympus 12-40 mm f2.8 pro? I want to buy one considering as the Panasonic kit lens 12-60mm f3.5 is limited capabilities.
Any problems with it making your camera freeze? I was happy with this speed booster until it kept making my camera freeze and I'd have to take out the battery to even turn it off. Tried updating firmware and nothing changed.
My viltrox is too soft when wide opened. I have to stop down at least one stop to make it usuable. Adapter is adjusted for focusing to infinity. Metabones is sharp even at f1.2.
as someone who still manages to get great images with my g7, i look forward to adapting my full frame canon glass. thank you for the effort and the sharing. i am a very appreciative subscriber. thumbs up.
Hello. You are using a Panasonic Lumix GH camera and a Sigma AF 18-35mm lens with a Viltrox EF-M1 adapter. If you focus on the subject, and change the focal length of the lens (18 - 35 or 35 - 18). Does the subject remain sharp? The sharpness disappears on my camera, and I need to focus a second time. When using a Panasonic 12 -38, 2.8 lens, there is no such effect. I change the focal length and the subject is constantly in focus. What do you think is the cause of the effect with Sigma AF 18-35mm.
Trochu si prohrávám s myšlenkou objektiv prodat a koupit Viltrox Speedbooster a Sigmu 18-35 1.8. Natáčím občas i v horších světelných podmínkách, tak clona 1.2 by se hodila. Nadruhou stranu Leica je lehčí a bude mít lepší autofocus. Co by jsi mi doporučil ty? Tu Sigmu se speedboosterem nebo si ponechat by Leicu. Díky moc.
I'm using the g7 with EF-m2/sigma 17-50mm f2.8 (adapter makes it 24-70mm f2.0) Excellent combo! Also soon will be using another ef-m2 with tokina 11-16 f2.8. Using these for video only in my wedding gigs. I paid less than $135 each for both adapters on ebay through different sellers.
Am i the only one that can't use Sigma 17-50 f2.8 with the viltrox ef-m2? The connection isn't good enough, so if i turn the lens all the way it disconnects. Previously i didn't have this problem with Aputure Dec Lens Regain. Because of this i end up buying Tokina 11-16 f2.8 ProDx II and Sigma 18-35 f1.8. Tokina is rather soft wide open so i manly use Sigma 18-35 in low light.
@@jorgem50 No, it was a good lens. As i said it worked with Gh4 and Aputure Dec LensRegain speedbooster and also i did a test with Canon 7d mark II. And the viltrox ef-m2 works with Sigma 18-35 and Tokina 11-16.
Ahoj ! Poprosim o radu ak budes vediet pomoct. Dakujem !😊
I am not sure but I do believe that the gain in aperture you get from a speedbooster does not give you any extra dof. You will get more light, but its not like an actually extra stop. I could be mistaken though. Does anybody know for sure?
Hello, first, it's a nice review ! Now my question, for stills, what is the best pick, the Oly 40-150mm f2.8 (1200€) or the Viltrox EF-M2 with Canon 70-200mm F4.0 (for 750€), this should be something like 100-280mm f2.8 on my Panasonic G85. Size and weight is not a problem, i want to shoot some rugby, mainly by daylight.
Thank you, I only recommend buying speedbooster if you already have Canon lenses, I definitely don't recommend buying Canon lenses to use them on M43 camera. Panasonic 50-200mm F2.8-4 would probably be the best option for you.
The Hybrid Shooter thanks you for your repsonse. May would Panasonic make a MFT speedbooster for the S1 FF-Lenses Line Up with proper Support 😂 Never stop Streaming 😅
I think Canon _sort of_ addressed it in their EOS R, where the shutter blades close to block the sensor while switching lenses. The problem there is that the shutter blades are likely more sensitive than the sensor itself. Oh well, maybe one day we'll see a perfect solution!
Great Review again man! I love your videos, really enjoy it everytime. Very practical tips and helpful information. I use a similar combination: Lumix G81/85 + Viltrox EF-M2 + Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 and I am very happy with it. BTW thanks for tip for removing the vignetting at wide angle!!! Keep going
Hey, sorry if you don't see this. I might be stupid but I just got my Viltrox EF M2 II speed booster to adapt my Sigma 18-35 to my Panasonic G85. I can't get the adapter to attach to the 18-35. Am I screwing it in wrong? I'm so confused. Thanks for your time.
I am about to try out an old Pentax 18-35mm with an adaptor on my Lumix G9. I am starting with a very basic adaptor, just to see how I like the idea. When you turn the camera on, it asks what focal length...but with a zoom what number do you put into the G9? The longest focal length, the shortest, in the middle, or something else? I am curious if anyone knows the answer?
I have searched this video... need some advise. I have this exact speedbooster and sigma combo on gh5 with the latest firmwares but I can not change aputure in camera or on Speedbooster manualy. Any help?
Unfortunately, I sold it years ago, so I can’t help you with that. My general is advise is to move away from speedboosters, there are much better options nowadays.
hey, would you expect similar autofocus performance on a G80 for shooting stills? the speed that you've shown in the video is completely fine for my needs, but I'm worried if my G80 would perform worse.
Hi! How would you compare image quality of this combination vs. Leica 10-25. I saw a comparison recently where there was much more softness on the edges of the image with Sigma on Viltrox. And tonnes of chromatic aberration. Could it be caused by faulty speedbooster? Did you regulate your speedbooster somehow before use?
What do you think is the best quality lens option for GH5 for commercial work. Speedbooster+Sigma and other / Olympus Pro Series f1.2 mft or maybe voightlander ? Ps. Yours review are always good ;)
Thank you, personally I would go with native Panasonic lens because of DFD autofocus and dual image stabilization. I use Panasonic 12-60mm F2.8-4 most of the time, 12-30mm F2.8 is also a good option and there are very good and affordable 15mm, 20mm and 25mm primes.
The Hybrid Shooter I do have a 12-35v2 15 1.7 20 1.7 and 25 1.4. Just was thinking about something more professional with even better bokeh effect. Did you check this Olympus 17mm 1.2? Or ther 25/45mm 1.2?
Personally, I don't get the Olympus Pro line. Those lenses are huge and very expensive, so I don't own any of those. I highly recommend Panasonic Leica 42.5mm F1.2 if you budget allows it, that is optically the best lens that I have tested on M43 with beautiful background blur.
The Hybrid Shooter yes I have heard about 42.5 1.2 that is also very good in that. So if you will have a chance to rent or get from somebody this pro line Olympus series will be great to see your review! Take care!
At 2:43 it affects me only when i use Sigma 50-100 f/1.8 with tripod plate on the Lens...many times i lost the horizon and i fix it in post..For studio photography its a little bad but i deal with it
Hey Hybrid Shooter, I have the A7iii and a GH5, and so I’m thinking of getting the Sigma 18-35 for the Sony, and then an adapter to use the Sigma on the GH5. Do you see any problems with that? What adapter might you recommend for this case? Thank you!
Are you having any issues with vignetting? I have the viltrox ef-m2ii with sigma 17-50 f2.8 on my g85 and getting heavy vignetting in 1080, more when the camera moves. Have you seen this?
Hello! I appeal to you about the problem of AF and aperture! GH5S+Viltrox EF-M2ii+Sigma 18-35. Not working at all! Firmware GH5S 1.2, Viltrox 3.3. Connected Sigma 35 the same thing happens! You can hear the sounds from the lens. Sometimes the camera says "Failed attaching the lens. Make sure there is no pollution at the point of attachment" please Help me!)
I have purposely bought a new canon mount sigma 18-35 f1.8 for my G7, along with a Viltrox EF-M2 adapter. This is the best and affordable setup for me at the moment. I didn't buy any of the prime lenses of MFT because at 1.8 they are not letting enough light into the sensor in dim environment. However there are 2 cons of this setup: 1st is the weight of the lens + my Ronin-m is killing my arms 2nd is the mount of G7 is too soft to handle the weight of the sigma thus my G7 lens mount is kind of loosen up. Although this hasn't affected the quality of the video but i doubt that my G7 will last long if I continue to use it for another 6 months. Otherwise, the performance of this combo is excellent!
I was looking for a video on the viltrox/sigma combination and you had exactly what I'm looking for. I think it's odd that this type of thing happens quite a bit with your channel. Also very informative! Is it possible that a longer lens would auto-focus better than this Sigma? It would seem that the hunting would be less noticeable because there would be a larger margin for error.
The answer is unfortunately no. I have the Sigma 150-600 and the hunting is quite painful at times if you don’t work around it. For one, the longer telephotos have more drive range because they focus from ~3m all the way to infinity and infinity is a lot when you have that reach. Especially when you want it ultra dialled in at the far end. To counter act this, it has a switch for “full range”, “< 10m”, and “10m - infinity”. The longer the lens, the more complicated it becomes to autofocus.
There is new viltrox m2 for canon m serier efm soeedbooster adapter Can you do a video of canon m50 with viltrox efm m2 with canon lens and compare autofocus, low light,4k ,built quality
Alright so, if let’s say I have a gh5s, and I want to use a 24-70mm lens with the speed booster, would it still look like a gh5s or would it look a little smaller
After using Viltrox NF-m43x with my old tamron 17-50/2.8, I see no reason buying Metabones Speed Booster for 8x times higher price. Images are very sharp with a good contrast.
Metabones is a very, very solid performer and the glass it uses really is better IMO. However, not so much better that it costs that much extra. Diminishing return for sure. In a fair and just world the metabones would be maybe 70-100$ extra. Depends on the use, budget and intended target audience - but most wont be able to tell a difference between the two adapters without designated lighting/placement tests because the seeable differences are circumstantial at best after the focal distance of 18 - my experience is limited to the sigma and tamron 24-70
Is the sigma a focus by wire lens yea? How is the easiest way to tell if a lens is full manual or focus by wire. There's no clear information of this online
@@TheHybridShooter oh sorry, i just call it 'prefocus'- when you set the camera to manual focus, you can drag the AF box to the selected target and the camera will auto focus for you (even though it's set to manual focus). I've never had any issues with olympus or panasonic lens, but not sure if it works with a speedbooster + the sigma lens...
Thank you for this info, very helpful. For my G85, I'm trying to decide between the Metabones Ultra and other boosters. Any advice would be much appreciated!
I purchased the Viltrox EF-M2 Speedbooster and returned it few days later because it was a disaster. It had back-focus issues with all lenses I tried... when the camera (GH5 & GX9) got a focus. Unfortunately, it is not easy to focus correctly with Viltrox. When focusing on the same subjects it may get a focus or may not, so you have to press the shutter or AF bottom several times. My copy didn't work with Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro and had some issues with EF 50mm f/1.4. It worked with EF 35mm f/1.4 L and EF 17-40 F/4 L (but still with back-focus effect). I updated the unit with the latest software, but it didn't help. It seems that it's possible to correct the back-focus issues by adjusting the position of the optical element, but to my opinion it should be done by the manufacture and not by the user. I contacted Viltrox support in order to find a solution to the problem, but got an answer " ...We understand you want to solve this problem as soon as possible. But we have so many compatible problem of many new lenses need to be solved one by one. It will take a much longer time. We also hope we can solve your problem soon. But it is really hard to solve these problems, our engineer need to test and change the program..." All the lenses I used are listed as compatible on Viltrox website. It was enough to return the unit and not longer look at this company. As for video use - just forget it. It's not possible to use the camera in autofocus mode, because the lens is constantly hunting. One more thing. I found GH5 + Viltrox + Canon EF lenses such as 24-70 f/2.8 or 70-200 f/2.8 combo is ridiculously heavy and uncomfortable with small MFT body. I was afraid that the weight of the lens could deform the bayonet of the GH5. Finally I decided to stay with MFT lenses. May be In the future I'll try Metabones to adapt Canon's TS lenses to Pana camera's. But is so expensive for such a limited use...
Is the AF performance with this lens and the speedbooster significantly better with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 series cameras because they have phase-detect autofocus?
No, I unfortunately, haven't tested that, but I expect it to perform similarly, just with slower focus and more hunting. There will be less vignetting in 4K though, since the G85 has a bit of additional crop in 4K.
Thank you, I actually have the opposite impressions based on the reviews that I have see. I also intend to test Metabones in the future, so I will probably make a comparison.

A few things I’ve noticed:
Thank you for sharing your experiences, 50mm 1.8 is the only EF lens that I own, so I wasn't able to test it with other Canon lenses.
Another update: Tested the EF 35mm f2 IS and works beautifully. The 50mm f1.2 L did not work at all.
Any idea if it will work with a 16-35 2.8?
The Happy Hour Hound Not sure, I did not get to try that one.
Wondering how well this works with a 75-300 EF iii, if I could get some auto focus and the long end to be f/4 that’s be great but the lens already has some CA
This was literally the video I was looking for. Excellent video!
Thank you, I'm always glad you provides what viewers are looking for!
Thank you, I remember that you have had issues with .64x on GH5S. I will probably get the GH5S as well, so I will go with 0.71x.
You are welcome! Sounds great!
I need to keep myself busy until the S1R arrives lol
The exact thing I searched for after the Lumix G9 information brought me right back to your channel. Subscribed!
Does the viltrox ef-M2II work with the sigma Canon 18-35 EF-S Mount or just with the EF mount?
Some sigma efs would work since they do not have the protruding rear lens part.
im thinking on getting the G9 because overall it is a complete package in terms of photography features and video features and quality, my only downside is the size of the sensor in terms of low light performance and such, does this improve the G9 ? i was looking at canon cameras but none of them have the same features of the G9, so right now the G9 is top 1 option for me.
Which do you recommend more for a first lens, the Leica 12-60 f2.8-4.0 or this combo?
I have an olympus 14-42 mm f3.5-5.6 will the adapter make my lens faster? Or it only works with canon
hey i have a question, when you mount the lens on the adapter does it do the click sound? i bought my speedboster and received today, but whent i tried to mount my 18-35 it does not lock completly, doensn't do the click like my other spedbooster fo M mounts.
i have the same adapter and lens you have.
I'm now seriously considering buying a G9 or an EM1 mkii
I find it quite refreshing you don't fall into the bullshit territory of many MfT shooters who are more than happy to accept equivalence in focal length, but insist it doesn't apply to the effect of equivalence on aperture either in DoF, or overall light gathering [and therefore noise].
I am pretty sure that 8K will not be in any mirrorless camera until 2020.
uses exact same thing but the hunting of the lens making too much noises and never ending have the motor sound, is that normal?
If you want to use vintage lenses tape the ef-m2 to body connectors. This is fantastic tool with Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon, Tessar etc. When you add the GH5 IBIS those old lenses becomes a treasures.
Yes, I agree, being able to use larger format lens with capable camera such as GH5 is a great option.
Thank you, I haven't tried that combination yet, but I will definitely do so.
Yes, that can be adjusted simply by turning the optical element in the adapter clock-wise. Just search for viltrox infinity focus adjustment.
Hi! I know this is an old video from you, but I want to know what is your advice about Sigma 18-35 f1.8 and Olympus 12-40 mm f2.8 pro? I want to buy one considering as the Panasonic kit lens 12-60mm f3.5 is limited capabilities.
Hello,
Great review.
I have this combo but with G7, however there is a lot of focus hunting w/ the sigma18-35mm. Any recommendations? please?
The AF on G7 is very outdated by 2022 standards, so there is nothing that can be done with that.
Any problems with it making your camera freeze? I was happy with this speed booster until it kept making my camera freeze and I'd have to take out the battery to even turn it off. Tried updating firmware and nothing changed.
I haven't had any problems with that so far.
How do you know if you need to re-adjust the Viltrox
My viltrox is too soft when wide opened. I have to stop down at least one stop to make it usuable. Adapter is adjusted for focusing to infinity. Metabones is sharp even at f1.2.
I own the g9 and use it with my gimbal. G9 with the Viltrox and tokina 11-16mm looks amazing!
G9 is great for gimbal work with that IBIS.
Does the sigma 18-200 dc os hsm compatible with viltrox ef-m2?
as someone who still manages to get great images with my g7, i look forward to adapting my full frame canon glass. thank you for the effort and the sharing. i am a very appreciative subscriber. thumbs up.
You're welcome, thank you for watching!
18-35 is no longer partfocal if you use speedbooster, so that is normal with that combination.
@@TheHybridShooter
Thank. The information is helpful.
Does the July 12th 2024 firmware update work on the G9ii?
Trochu si prohrávám s myšlenkou objektiv prodat a koupit Viltrox Speedbooster a Sigmu 18-35 1.8. Natáčím občas i v horších světelných podmínkách, tak clona 1.2 by se hodila. Nadruhou stranu Leica je lehčí a bude mít lepší autofocus. Co by jsi mi doporučil ty? Tu Sigmu se speedboosterem nebo si ponechat by Leicu. Díky moc.
Určite nechať 12-60, ku GX80 nemá 18-35 moc zmysel.
What’s the best settings with this combo for photography
I'm using the g7 with EF-m2/sigma 17-50mm f2.8 (adapter makes it 24-70mm f2.0) Excellent combo! Also soon will be using another ef-m2 with tokina 11-16 f2.8. Using these for video only in my wedding gigs. I paid less than $135 each for both adapters on ebay through different sellers.
Tokina 11-16 is optically excellent lens, that can be great combo.
@@adanco4967 you must have had a bad lens. Mine works perfectly.
@@jorgem50 No, it was a good lens. As i said it worked with Gh4 and Aputure Dec LensRegain speedbooster and also i did a test with Canon 7d mark II. And the viltrox ef-m2 works with Sigma 18-35 and Tokina 11-16.
@@adanco4967 Здравствуйте. Как решили проблему с бесконечностью viltrox ef-m2 и Tokina 11-16?
Ahoj ! Poprosim o radu ak budes vediet pomoct. Dakujem !😊
Bohužaľ netuším, G9 nemám užž asi 3 roky.
I am not sure but I do believe that the gain in aperture you get from a speedbooster does not give you any extra dof. You will get more light, but its not like an actually extra stop. I could be mistaken though. Does anybody know for sure?
Technically no, because the focal lengths changes as well, but it makes you able to achieve shallow depth of field at wider focal lengths.
I think one of the reasons I like speedboosters the most is because I don't need to worry about exposing the sensor when switching lenses. :)
That is a good point, manufacturers should somehow figure that out on mirrorless cameras.
I think Canon _sort of_ addressed it in their EOS R, where the shutter blades close to block the sensor while switching lenses. The problem there is that the shutter blades are likely more sensitive than the sensor itself. Oh well, maybe one day we'll see a perfect solution!
Exactly, that is IMO even worse than having exposed sensor.
Does the Viltrox ship with a cable for updating firmware? If not, what cable do I need to purchase? Thanks
No, it is regular micro usb.
Keep going
hello, does it work on af-c? Want to buy this lens for my lumix and fuji also.
Please tell me, is there such an adapter on Sigma with Nikon mount?
I am about to try out an old Pentax 18-35mm with an adaptor on my Lumix G9. I am starting with a very basic adaptor, just to see how I like the idea. When you turn the camera on, it asks what focal length...but with a zoom what number do you put into the G9? The longest focal length, the shortest, in the middle, or something else? I am curious if anyone knows the answer?
You need choose the focal length in the zoom range that you intend to shoot at, if unfortunately won't work perfectly at other focal lengths.
Thanks for the review. I recognise the beautiful Bratislava.
hey, would you expect similar autofocus performance on a G80 for shooting stills? the speed that you've shown in the video is completely fine for my needs, but I'm worried if my G80 would perform worse.
It will be slightly worse, but not by much.
@@TheHybridShooter what do you reckon, would it be noticible?
Kinda changes, thats the kind of explanation that clarifies everything for me. The Day I buy a Viltrox product is the day I chuck my GH5 in the pool.
Why are you watching the video then?
So does the adapter effectively make this about a 16-30mm (32-60 equivalent) lens?
Hey! Big fan of your reviews, but does the Sigma lens work with Image App?
Thank you, yes, image app doesn't care about lenses.
Hello, I just bought the lens and the viltrox, is it normal to hear it inside the lens when the aperture changes?
Yes, it is.
I have never compared those side by side, so I can't help you with that. Yes, I had to adjust the speedbooster.
I literally bought a gh5 with my 18-35 sig but my lens not fitting.... it feels loose
Well documented review. As always!
Thank you!
So, does this speedbooster fit the E-M1 II and/or the G85? I know there have been some compatibility issues with the Metabones speedbooster.
It should, but I haven't tested it with either.
Take care!
Of course, I have ever get a chance, I will make a review.
What do you think about using this combo on Panasonic G80? I was considering buying Sigma 16 mm 1,4 but it is not wide enough for micro 4/3.
It will mostly perform the same, apart from 4K crop on G80.
At 2:43 it affects me only when i use Sigma 50-100 f/1.8 with tripod plate on the Lens...many times i lost the horizon and i fix it in post..For studio photography its a little bad but i deal with it
Thank you for sharing your experiences, I haven't tested it with telephoto lens, so I was not aware that it can happen.
Hi. How good does the IBIS work with this setup? Does the camera recognise the current focal lengh automatically?
Yes, it does, IBIS work like with native lens.
Yay! Thx
Because you're having a sensor "larger" than what your lens was made for. The same if one uses this lens in a full frame
Mine doesn’t fit the lens for some reason
So instead of buying panasonic 12-35 mm f/2,8 I can buy this combination and I will get even better results because of speed booster. If I'm correct.
Not completely, you won't get native functionality such as DFD AF, lens corrections and so on.
@@TheHybridShooter Oh, so mostly a manual focus would be good only. Just checked some tests about this. Thank you
I unfortunately can't help you with that. You should probably contact Viltrox support about that.
Great video for those looking for more versatility 💯👍
Thank you, it is indeed interesting option.
However there are 2 cons of this setup:
1st is the weight of the lens + my Ronin-m is killing my arms
2nd is the mount of G7 is too soft to handle the weight of the sigma thus my G7 lens mount is kind of loosen up. Although this hasn't affected the quality of the video but i doubt that my G7 will last long if I continue to use it for another 6 months.
Otherwise, the performance of this combo is excellent!
I agree, it is great setup at that price point. I'm surprised to hear about that mount, I haven't had any problems with G85 or G9.
G7 mount is rather cheaply made I guess
I have never used the G7, but that is unfortunate.
hello, i would like to know if you recommend this setup for portraits photography with two adapter the viltrox and a normal for the 70mm
Probably not, the AF is not good enough for portraits.
How does the Viltrox seriously compete with the Metabones Speedbooster XL0.71? In terms of cost and results?
I don't know, I have never used Metabones.
Fair enough.
There is new viltrox m2 for canon m serier efm soeedbooster adapter
Can you do a video of canon m50 with viltrox efm m2 with canon lens and compare autofocus, low light,4k ,built quality
I unfortunately don't have that speedbooster so I am not able to to that.
my viltrox ef m2 II is crashing my G9. any suggestions regarding that? it works well with my old GX1. but it makes the g9 crazy
Unfortunately, I can't help you with that, it worked fine with my G9.
@@TheHybridShooter thanks so much for replying
so if i would take a full frame f1.2 prime it would be an f 0.6 lens?
It would be F0.9.
I have a Panasonic G80 ?, Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC Art lens with Nikon mount.
Alright so, if let’s say I have a gh5s, and I want to use a 24-70mm lens with the speed booster, would it still look like a gh5s or would it look a little smaller
It would basically look like using 17-50mm micro four thirds lens on Panasonic GH5S.
The Hybrid Shooter thanks friend
You're welcome!
0:50 *It turns the 50mm to about 70mm instead of 100mm w/o the booster.
It is the same math.
Does Viltrox make the .64 speed booster?
After using Viltrox NF-m43x with my old tamron 17-50/2.8, I see no reason buying Metabones Speed Booster for 8x times higher price. Images are very sharp with a good contrast.
Neither do I at the moment, although I haven't tested the Metabones.
I intend to test the Metabones in the future as well, so I will try to make direct comparison.
Especially if your main use is video, that tiny difference in sharpness that may or may not exist is not going to matter anyway...
Great video. Can you do Viltrox Speedbooster on Canon m50 with sigma 18-35 test???
Thank you, I unfortunately don't have M50 anymore.
The AF just works with the Canon version, not with Nikon lenses!
Yes, that is true, Nikon version is manual focus only.
I recognise Bratislava! I was there a year ago or so. Lovely city.
It is indeed Bratislava, there are some very nice sights here. Thank you for watching!
Is the sigma a focus by wire lens yea? How is the easiest way to tell if a lens is full manual or focus by wire. There's no clear information of this online
No, it has manual clutch. There is not easy way to tell.
@@TheHybridShooter what's a manual clutch mean, any videos on this?
It means that it is mechanical focus, not focus by wire. I don't know if there are any videos about that.
@@TheHybridShooter oh i think I got it. if it has the measurements it's most likely a mechanical focus lens. Thanks
Excellent information about the Viltrox.
Thank you!
If the aperture and crop factor BOTH gets the speed, does that mean that the full frame equiv of f1.2 is about f1.7 and not f2.4?
You will get full frame equivalent of 2.556 (1.8 * 0.71 * 2)
@@TheHybridShooter Oh okay. I thought you'd have to do 1.2 * 0.71 * 2 * 0.71 since both the aperturr and sensor gets enlarged.
In that case it is just 1.2 (1.278 to be exact) * 2 because the "enlargement" is already accounted for in that F1.2 value.
@@TheHybridShooter Oh okay. That makes sense. Thanks!
Hey man thanks for this video! I was wondering how this setup works with the prefocus feature when in manual mode? Does it still work?
You'r welcome, I'm not sure what you mean by prefocus.
Yes, that works.
No ano ale ako je na tom Viltrox v protisvetle? To nikde nieje poriadne vidiet.... Ake mas ty s nim skusenosti?
Popravde, to som zatiaľ netestoval, preverím to a napíšem.
If I use my Canon 16-35 2.8 on this with a G9 would it work?
Yes it will become 23-50mm f/2
Thank you for this info, very helpful. For my G85, I'm trying to decide between the Metabones Ultra and other boosters. Any advice would be much appreciated!
You're welcome, I have only used this Viltrox adapter, so I can't help you there.
with the 0,71x speedbooster, what is the equivalent focal range of the sigma 18-35?
25,5-50mm
@@TheHybridShooter at 18 mm do you see any vignetting?
It is shown in the video.
How is it a 1.42 crop factor?
2*0.71
Is the AF performance with this lens and the speedbooster significantly better with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 series cameras because they have phase-detect autofocus?
What would be the best lens/speed booster for astrophotographers?
Probably the Laowa 7.5mm F2.
have you used this + the sigma lens on the g80 does it fit and whats it like?
No, I unfortunately, haven't tested that, but I expect it to perform similarly, just with slower focus and more hunting. There will be less vignetting in 4K though, since the G85 has a bit of additional crop in 4K.
This adapter does not fit my sigma 18-35mm lens
You probably have other version of the lens mount or adapter mount. This is only for Canon EF mount.
Do you have experience with Olympus lenses?
Unfortunately, I have very little experiences with Olympus lenses.
Great video - thanks a lot !!
what happen if you utilize 2 of that converter at the same time?
That is not possible to do.
😁
Appreciate you can share some raw file of the picture ?
nice!
however from reviews and forums I came to know that the Metabones is much higher quality than its rivals. a bit expensive though.
Thank you, I actually have the opposite impressions based on the reviews that I have see. I also intend to test Metabones in the future, so I will probably make a comparison.
The Hybrid Shooter You're welcome :)
I ll watch out this space when you do. Cheers
This is my setup. Great video.
Thank you!
Great video. Please!!!, review of viltrox speedboster adapter for sony 6500.
Thank you, I unfortunately don't have Canon full frame lenses to test those on A6500.
Can you do a video on Lumix G80 please on using the adepter
Unfortunately not, I have sold my G80 years ago.
@@TheHybridShooter please which Adepters can be fixed and capatible with the G80… once you have used it Before…
