I'd rank them as follows: 6. FIFA 18 - 2018 World Cup DLC: Incredibly lazy half-assed after-thought with no qualifying, Captain your Country or even the ability to pick the squad! Doesn't even have the managers like in 2010 and 2014. Shit. 5. 2002 FIFA World Cup - Very limited game which barely improved upon 1998 and was blown away by 2006. EA had not figured out the whole football game thing at this point. 4. 1998 FIFA World Cup - Deserves great credit for a "World Cup Classics" mode where you can play historic finals with the players of the time - even brought back the 1966 commentator for it! Deserves very little credit for anything else - especially a rating system where Lee Bowyer is 84 and one of England's best players! 3. 2006 FIFA World Cup - Class game only let down by a scenario mode worse than 8 years prior where you used the current players to relive old matches for some reason? Good focus on the world rankings and the first actually good WC game with qualifying and an extended range of teams. 2. 2010 FIFA World Cup - The template for what a WC game should be with great modes and capturing the atmosphere of South Africa really well. The "form" system during the tournament doesn't seem to affect anything or work and Clyde Tyldesley saying "Cape Town has been colonised by England" was not the best choice of phrase! Still any game where Waving Flag plays is a good game. 1. 2014 FIFA World Cup - Takes everything that works from 2010 and levels up with a training/form system that sees your players grow into the campaign realistically. Fast, fluid, fun gameplay coupled with a joyful and nostalgic soundtrack and atmosphere make this game a brilliant gateway to some of my happiest memories. I'd give anything to go back to 2014 and when I play this game it feels like, just for a moment, I have. Perfection.
I think you're harsh on 1998 and 2002. Ultimately, they were earlier games and the scope was meant to be smaller. But you're totalyl right about how garbage the new DLCs are. I guess we can debate 2010 vs 2014. 2010 had: - more regional stadiums - better atmosphere during games - easier to learn gameplay - "dynamic" qualifying simulation - qualifying results in other regions would not strictly follow real results (unlike in 2014, where all qualifying matches follow real-life results until you play your first game, which is kinda lame and you can't change this unless you do custom qualifying mode) - the ability to choose only qualification + world cup or have friendlies included. In 2010 it made more sense because you would play friendlies before the World Cup too. In 2014 you get a bunch of friendlies but none before the World Cup, which is kinda dumb because you can't build form 2014 had: - more licensed kits - SLIDERS!!! - all regional qualifying modes - training camps - overall better, realistic gameplay Both games are tied in my book. They both shit on the DLCs today. Remember kids, "free" doesn't always mean better, and this is a great example.
the standalone world cup games where so much better content wise even the euro games where good with some interesting features like actual player traits negative and positve traits like in football manager/real life and it also had a mode where you can make your dream 11 and bench and play against the ai or your friend
