I am a great Joy Division fan, and I think this version is pretty well done. It keeps the mood of the song while doing it in a different way, that's pretty cool.
because most folks listen to music in two ways.. you're either lyrically centric or beat/rhythm/melody centric.. Im definitely the latter which is why i struggle MIGHTILY with lyrics lolol.. I thought 3 6 Mafia's 'Tear Da Club Up' was called, 'Lieutenant LordBuck' (melodically, it works though! lmao)
People need to see this in context. Moby is a very well respected techno and electronic musician who made some pioneering music in those genres. Yet he dabbled in punk and new wave as a young guy and even though it's not what he is known for he's playing this song in tribute to a band that he loved and influenced him, even though he's venturing out of his comfort zone a little. He could have easily done an electronic version of this song and people would have slagged it off. If he did a straight post punk version people would have said it doesn't compare and slagged him off. So he does an acoustic version that is is something a little different and nicely scored and guess what, people still slag him off. If people are that bothered by a guy paying respect to an artist he admires and don't want to accept that he's giving the song a different twist then they might as just go and stick to listening to their Joy Division originals and not bothering to listen to anything else.
Totally agree . I'm a massive Joy Divison & NO fan , but ALL musicians are influenced & inspired by what came before. To do a cover version as an established artist is just paying due respect & nothing to get it up the arse about !
Amen. As Killers die hard fan I also love their version of Shadowplay spiced up with their flair and style and they put it on album as a tribute which is a great way to show it. Still people will keep moaning that it's nowhere near the original, but it's not supposed to be by definition. Haters gonna hate anyway. But the great music and artists will stay true to themselves and their roots and survive it. We will as well. Keep on rocking.
I love this this version because its a heart-felt tribute, not an attempt to perform it "better than the original". That and I love the sound of a stand-up bass. It is slower and sweeter than the original, so its a perfect tribute. The respect and admiration really does come through.
'Stand up bass' ??? You mean cello surely. The bass is an ordinary electric bass. Not a bad cover but a cover no less. To really understand Ian Curtis's lyrics you have to come from one of the dead end shitholes that the UK is full of. And if you do you never want to go back if you can escape.
Moby, this is heartbreaking and beautiful. I broke down when your voice cracked a little at 4:00... his death was such a tragedy and this planet lost an incredible, endearing, beloved soul on that terrible day. Even now 29 years later I weep for his pain and pray he has found peace. Thank you for such a touching and respectful tribute.
Nobody could ever top Ian Curtis, but I will admit this tribute makes my eyes tear up. Twenty-three years old and he felt his life was hopeless. My God...
I think Ian was more in a situation where he was stuck between his grand mal seizures, his marriage problems and not facing the fact that he needed help but did not want to lay his burden on his band mates, hooky said that he always asked him if he was OK and most of the time Ian said yes, but member back then mental health was not talked as much as it is now, so I wouldn't say so much that he thought his life was hopeless, I think more that he just didn't want to say nothing coz he probably thought by doing that he thought maybe he might have been letting people down, I really wish that he did ask for help but chose to end things, bless him❤
my mom played cello and wrote epic poetry. anyway this song always meant the most to me out of all of them because my dad was a gifted by ear musician who shot himself dead in hotel congress here in tucson 1975 when i was 5. those wounds inside of us that never totally healed. we manage them well through literature music art poetry and personal faith too. no a loaded gun isn't the answer. i just dont think so after 45 years dadless. )O;
here from "Heat" (De Niro/Pacino/Kilmer/a bunch of other great people), this song came right when I needed it, and I've listened 20 times in the past 3 days. Feeling like Pacino, chasing after De Niro, in LA, at night... unbeatable
You know what I love, the fact I loved Moby, and I loved John Frusciante before I even knew they loved Joy Division and New Order, it's just such an amazing feeling to know the artists you love have this feeling towards another completely unrelated band you love.
I like how Moby said "we're going to try playing one of their songs," because even though some covers are still enjoyable with each band's added flair, like this one, that's all any band can do is TRY to cover Joy Division's songs. None can reach the depth that Curtis' voice and words left behind.
As a Joy Division fan since before most of yoos, this is a good tribute, as Moby said it was. Face it. No-one can cover a Joy Division song. Can't be done. Impossible to get what Ian Curtis had.
When I was about 18 years old and going to high school, I got a chance to DJ at a local college radio station and did my weekly research of new release vinyl before my 0300h--0600h bottom-tier shift. I'd listen to the intro of every track on every disk that week. Sex Pistols were newsworthy, but Wire and Warsaw grabbed my attention. The only instruments I'd played were strumming guitar and cello, all music I'd ever read to play was signed in bass clef. To hear this arrangement split the rise vs. fall into delicately understated electric bass and beseeching cello, reflectively strummed guitar and familiar voice doing cover at a reflective pace felt heartbreaking in a very good way. Thanks to all who made it happen and brought it to a place where it can be found and savored!
just so many tears. my mom played the cello. I am also reminded of Dylan's violinist a lovely lass. Cello and French Horn express the melancholy so well
As a Joy Division fan since before most of yoos, this is a good tribute, as Moby said it was. Face it. No-one can cover a Joy Division song. Can't be done. Impossible to get what Ian Curtis had.
LOVE moby. he can do no wrong by me. and 5 stars for this video which has amazing visual and audio clarity, unlike 95% of the junk floating around on youtube.
Been fan of joy division since factory records picked em up mid 70s. This is a great tribute to Ian Curtis undisputed lay most influential person in music today, stil mourned and worshiped after almost 40 years.
being one of the few people to have actually seen joy division live, i can honestly say that this pretty much captures the raw feeling the original has. i think you can read too much into the thing.
Of course it is completely different from the original, but it is not bad. Doesn't have the raw energy of Joy Division, but I suppose that is not Moby's style. Don't really listen to him so I don't know. Ian Curtis had been dead for 6 years before I was even born, yet I am glad I learned of their music a few years ago. A student of music history can clearly look at what came before and after and realize that they did have an impact that culminated in today's music. When people like Moby cover songs like this, it simply brings more attention to JD's music. I listen to New Order and wonder what things would have sounded like had Ian Curtis remained. He was definitely not the best singer in the world by any means, but what made that group special, imo of course, is taking this punk or post punk sound and completely taking it in another direction, especially lyrically. I suppose one has to appreciate various types of music, and know what they're listening for, to appreciate this band. I wouldn't imagine most younger kids today would even like that type of music. Mainstream music today is synonymous with commercialization. It is not about the music so much as it is the artist. Maybe things were always that way, but I don't believe so.
Wow. I thought this would be a mediocre effort to cover an inspiring song, but it is truly unique in its approach and style. This version is as effective as the original in many ways. Different genre, same meaning. Epic cover. Thank you Joy Division; thank you Moby.
I'm a massive Joy Division fan going back to Mid 80s . I have a Joy Division Tribute album and he does this song on that album . A fantastic version of what is there best song . This is a more Acoustic Version of that song . And he does an Excellent attempt of a true Classic ! 👏👏
Moby sings it with sadness and depression. kind of like an echo of the song. Ian Curtis took it further from part to part and was focusing on the difference of his undertone. Moby doesnt do that. Great is the Cello. it makes it feel like "remembrance" and "nostalgic". Great idea to put this song in such a light.
Well done by Moby, this song manages to gives me the same tinkling on my spine as when I heard the original for the first time in my life, some quarter of a century ago. *edit: that was until he started singing, hearing the accoustic guitar playing it is haunting, alas his voice doesn't express the pain with which this song needs to be sung by a far stretch.
I dont know if you any of you Half Wits Understand something. This is called a Tribute, an Homage to Joy Division. He wasnt going to attempt to outdo the original song in the first place. Nice Job Moby. At least someone these days recognizes good music. Give him credit for at least that.
I am a great Joy Division fan, and I think this version is pretty well done. It keeps the mood of the song while doing it in a different way, that's pretty cool.

Same bro. Im crying now
Do you live in macc ?
try john frusciante version

I don't know how you can play this without being blinded by tears all the way thru.
Worth gettin a turntable just for this on vinyl - can get a Project deck for two hundred pounds/bucks?
l Love Stones Love You Live on vinyl - cost you a tenner for double live record and sounds awesome on a nice deck?

If you’ve lived a life you know!
"It was me, waiting for me,
Hoping for something more,
Me, seeing me this time,
Hoping for something else" - Epic vision of self
Sadly Moby sings "WEEE, seeing me this way, hoping for something more" in his post modern hipster voice.

Agreed.
I would agree, and I even like some Moby stuff, too, but his singing should not be out of tune and trembling.
Amen.

I like his version, loved it in Heat!
The original version will always be THE version, but I like this one.

Such reverence and a beautiful version giving respect for what this song means to many.
incredible song, incredible version
Incredibly boring, made for the suburban white middle-class. A "lite" version of the actual song.

And how do you feel about your hero Moby's tepid coffee-shop karaoke destruction of one of your fav bands songs?
A great feeling, indeed.
I wasn't expecting much, but wow, Moby really hit this on the nail. He's not Ian Curtis, but he made this song his own. Fantastic cover.

Ian Curtis Forever!
You can kind of hear Moby's entire musical DNA in this song. Not a cover, or a tribute, but an inheritance. That's what music should be about.
Brilliant excellently played and sung. I love Joy Division and Moby did this song justice 🙌🙌
Moby is the man, Congratulations for the Joy Division cover!

Per questo brano... e per molti altri.

Brilliantly performed. Well done. I thoroughly enjoyed that.
Brilliant version. Ian Curtis not forgotten!
Nice one Moby. There hasn't been a band as good as Joy Div and there never will be. RIP Ian Curtis
Been listening to this as an 11 year old kid after my dad gave me a CD with that song, still listening at 19 years of age
It’s great to hear new presentations of songs. It allows the song, music and its composer to remain alive, present and active in public consciousness.
Much respect for Moby with those words. Ian was a legend, and still is. So is Moby :)

This is fine and imaginative version. It remains true to the original without pimping by adding some originality.
Love you! Thank you so much! Perfect! Out of reality - to hear how you sing this song!
Hoping for something else!

Good attempt as it was done with passion and feeling, as the original was. Shows what a great, great song this was and still is.
Best cover ever!
Great interpretation of one of Joy Division's masterpieces.
Great performance. Wish he would have screamed "when our love goes wrong" like he did in the studio version.
Love this cover. Love the original. Joy Division forever.....
It still breaks my heart all these years later what a waste of life RIP Ian Curtis god bless

such a respectfull cover. THX Moby
Respect Moby for doing this one.
this a good and respectful version- one that could be at my funeral :)
For a cover this is a good one.
Played with respect and it is sincere.

Moby is awesome
Dunno how you always can control your emotions in your music, at all.!!!! Always!
grande, bellissima versione!
wow. I did not expect this to be so good.
i think so too, don't listen to the others. it's sang very sensitive.
As I understand Moby was a big fan of JD.
He is full of surprices apparently
I love this version, I have the dvd, but I would love if this live version became avalibe on cd or itunes, as I want it on my Ipod
In the movie "Heat" the Moby version of "New Dawn Fades" starts playing when Hanna is pursuing McCauley. It was awesome
nice the cello on this song. one of my favorite ever
i love that he says "try playing" one of their songs... he obviously acknowledges he can't do it like them, but he isn't trying to either...
"We're gonna try playing one of their songs". Exactly.
