      I was a tot at the time, and don't remember Dennis James, but as I watch these gems, yeah, a real class act host and I am really diggin' his work. Dennis is so much more sincere than Bob Barker. Bob Barker always comes across as a stage act.

      @@wschmrdr I think the story is that in the beginning Dennis James was going to be the host for the entire Price Is Right franchise as Bob Barker was still busy with Truth Or Consequences and originally didn't want to do Price Is Right but then changed his mind.

      Well as a contestant that would be the case, but not exactly in the early days. I think 12 was generally the minimum age back then to attend with some exceptions but it all depended on the taping and the version (daytime/syndication).

    Weird seeing the old orange-brown contestant row readouts with the rainbow set. Thought they redone everything at once. Great find!

    • @Tubewings
      @Tubewings 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      UNCJerry77 Maybe the rainbow Contestants Row was malfunctioning on this day, and they brought out the old setpiece for this taping.

    • @WarioBarker
      @WarioBarker 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Tubewings Actually, this was taped before the first daytime episode with the rainbow set was, so the Contestant's Row displays (and the Giant Price Tag's brown border) hadn't been changed yet.

      +UNCJerry77 I think they kept using the orange displays on the night show while they used the "rainbow set" on the daytime show.

    19:28 - Dian did not have the trademark Price is Right handflip correct. Her hands are pointed down and not up as seen here. She would mention getting the "S-flip" wrong in her early days, even slapping her hand, while doing the models' interview on Vicki Lawrence's talk show shortly before she left in 1993.

    I was only 12 years old when this episode was recorded. I always noticed back then the night time price is right, the prizes cost more than the daytime. Seeing that Trip to Quebec City made me think about when I went there along time ago. This is still a great show.

    Diane in a brown wig means this must be early indeed for her, since the reason she had the wig was to fool people into believing she was Anitra (who was herself on a sabbatical at the time). Before November 1975, in any case, since by the first hour-long daytime shows Dian had ditched the wig (and the real Anitra was back on the air)

    When did they change from the original orange displays to the multi-color ones that they still use today? I seem to remember that the James version hung on to the orange displays while the Barker version moved to the multi-color ones when they moved to one hour?
    I was four years old when this aired, so my memory might be a little foggy.

    • @Tubewings
      @Tubewings 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know what the production number for this episode is, but by #125N (which is on TH-cam), the James version switched to the multi-colored Contestants Row.
      Also, the switch on the Barker version occurred when the show moved from its afternoon timeslot to the morning timeslot (in August of 1975, two and a half months before the show expanded to a full hour).

    • @JohnH511
      @JohnH511 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +James Bonnen Not exactly. The networks still can't offer network programming in that time slot. What they were allowed to do as of 1996, but not previously, is syndicate shows. That's what made it possible for CBS to buy King World and become the distributor of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!, but they're still not network programs.

    • @jamesbonnen
      @jamesbonnen 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The new rules have allowed the network to preempt programming, such as Fox atarting baseball pre game coverage at 6:30 CST.

    • @JohnH511
      @JohnH511 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fox isn't covered by the same regulations as CBS, NBC and ABC. The definition of a network is that it distributes more than 15 hours a week of regularly scheduled national programming. Fox does exactly 15 - if they programmed the 10 PM Eastern Time hour, they would be considered a network and they couldn't put anything on at 7:30 except on Sundays.

    Does anyone have the following featuring Dennis James as host:
    *) The infamous "There Goes Fritz" episode from 1976 in which Janice Pennington breaks down in tears backstage following the Cliff Hangers game (Fritz was the name of her then-boyfriend whom disappeared while mountain climbing).
    *)Any episodes of the daytime 1974-75 version of Name That Tune. I doubt there's a copy available but it would be priceless to see.

    • @ChrisBakerauthor
      @ChrisBakerauthor 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +meyerj75 Nowadays, a host would be fired in a heartbeat for saying something like that. I like Dennis, but that's a pretty tasteless joke.

    • @WarioBarker
      @WarioBarker 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Baker I know I'm way late to this, but it wasn't a joke. Dennis wasn't aware that Fritz had disappeared shortly before the first nighttime taping with Cliff Hangers, and his naming of the mountain climber was probably a coincidence.
      ...On the other hand, it's possible that never happened at all. When the official TPIR TH-cam channel uploaded clips of the game's debut a few years ago, Janice could be seen walking behind the game board right as Bob says "Cliff Hangers" for the first time.

      TimBoud2012, That plus Bob Barker's request that no shows with fur coats as prizes to be aired on GSN. That might change now that Bob is no longer on the show anymore and that there is debate on whether or not the Dennis James hosted episodes should be relieved from the ban since it was Barker, not James, that imposed the fur coat ban.

    Wow, the only thing more jarring than Dian's brunette wig is the set on this episode. Can you say juxtaposition?
    Speaking of wow, that's the most heartbreaking way you could ever get screwed over on Grocery Game! As soon as I saw that she was a penny short, I knew there was no way she could possibly win.

      IKR? Once I saw $6.74 pop up on that cash register, my heart sank & my jaw just about dropped to the floor
