i think you were actually right though. This kinda seems like something they put in the game and they abandoned later. There was quite a bit of random mysterious stuff put in the game for spooky wierd factor, that never went anywhere.

also when Max asked the homeless women "How long have you been in Arcadia Bay" (or something like that) the woman replied "1000 years..." and when Max saw the shot she took of the butterfly right from the start of the game and saw it at the end of the game, she says "it feels like I took that shot 1000 years ago" (something along the lines of that).
@kun mosta I disagree. There is a video out there where the theorize that Chloe has time travel powers. In BTS you see Chloe having dream sequences and visions.... yes just like Max who has visions in class and later in episode 5. Chloe never ever thought she had powers, she never knew it herself so it can be assumed that Max had her powers long ago as well and she didn't know until her best friend dies in the bathroom
And when max talks to Joyce she says "five years ago feels like a thousand now" the same amount of time the homeless woman said she lived in Arcadia bay. Maybe the homeless lady is max from the offshoot timeline she created when she saved Chloe's dad
If she was max, then why she didn't notice Chloe as a friend to her? She addresses Chloe as "Joyce's daughter who's always in trouble" never in an intimate way that maybe she was friends with her like max.. Also she had a story, she told max that she had a home but the Prescott took that from her.. I don't remember the details, but she had a story that I don't think relates to max.. Since she lived in Seattle and not Arcadia.. Idk.. She is important but I don't think she is max.. Plus that cereal, she mentioned that Joyce gives her food often, so maybe Joyce did give her that,
Has you sayed, the old woman lived in Seatle. When Max goes back in time and reverses Chloe's father's death the present changes and when she arrives at Chloe's house, he told her that he never thought he would see her again after she went to Seatle. Maybe Max is going to solve everything and leave Arcadia Bay, moving to Seatle... But then, when she misses her home town she is going back to Arcadia Bay.
I agree that something is up with her, but I'm not entirely sure what. The Max connection seems like the most likely one. Maybe the homeless lady disappears when the timeline gets sorted out? Also: I think its a note to mention that she also is the only other person besides Chloe she tells about the hurricane, and she totally doesn't look surprised.

I mean... even if Max's body doesn't become younger when she rewinds - and I don't think it's the case - the age difference would be... irrevelant, I'd say. And the whole "more she goes through time, older she gets" thing doesn't sound right in my mind. If she was getting older than she should have, her mobile phone would get crazy too, showing different time. Game doesn't mention that. Also, it seems that items cannot be moved back in time further than to the point they've been created. Do you remember the scene between Kate and David, where you could choose to help Kate and scare David off or to take a photo? Have you ever tried to take a photo, then rewind and help Kate? 'cause, you see, if you do so - you don't have the photo. If I recall correctly, the same thing goes for blue butterfly photo - Max has to take it once again, as she rewound time to the point when said photo did not exist yet. Agreed, it seems that this rule doesn't apply to every non plot-oriented photo as these still appear in the journal, but then I guess that it's more of a gameplay thing-y. She travels several years back in time using the photo - her body is several years younger. Personally I believe that the thing that goes back in time is her mind/soul, not her body - she focuses on a time and space, she rewinds and then the universe suddenly tries to figure out what has been done to it, creating alternative reality "what if Max was standing not there, but here, with that item in her pocket". The same spot in time, different reality, where Max is not older than she should be at said time, just... standing in a different place. Max's body doesn't travel with her; reality tries to make sense out of mess Max did and thus adjusts her body's position in space. I suppose that her head hurts when she rewinds because her brain has to create and uphold a "bridge" between two points in time, while her mind exists simultaneously in multiple times... I hope that it makes any sense for any of you : | Then why does she say "funny, I think I look older", you ask? Think about it... she has seen Chloe's death(s), she has seen "Alternative Chloe" and Kate's suicide attempt, she has her "vision", Prescott threatens her, world seems to be ending and it looks like Arcadia Bay's fate is dependant on her - that's A LOT of pressure and to worry about. Would you sleep well in her place? I believe that she says she looks older because she's simply exhausted, both mentally and physically. But eh, that's just my opinion and I might be wrong. Was sure a lot of stuff you said right there XD I also don't believe Max ages throught time-traveling, but if the homeless lady REALLY is an older Max that claims to be a thousand years old, that's the only reasonable explanation I can think of, and when she rewinds by using pictures, it's a different method of time-traveling, so I don't really consider it. In general, I don't believe this that I said is true, but if there is really and older Max there, I think this is one of the possible explanations.
So have you ever considered to try and merge all your most prominent theories into one and see how they play off each other? How they prove or disprove each other? that would be an interesting video. Like a bigger guess at whats going on.
You missed to have missed the comment near the end of the game where Max says that the past week has felt like 1000 years (or something like that?). I doubt that was a coincidence looking back on it now. Ironically, I missed the homeless woman in this game, and I doubt they pointed out the cereal by coincidence nor left the cereal near the homeless woman by coincidence. This is a great find. Makes me want to play through the game again to find the things I missed, and analyze little details like this more closely.

Geek Remix I found something very interesting, in episode 1, there is a marking on Chloe's wall that says"Hole to Another Universe" and in episode 3, in the beginning next to Taylor in the bathroom, its the same message, and the message wasnt there in episode 2 so I think theres something up with those messages. Maybe the Hole to another universe message is foreshadowing max's ability to travel through photos and acidentally create another universe.
Did anyone read the Molly Moon series of books? (I loved them when I was young hah). Basically they're about a girl who learns (among other stuff) how to travel in time. But in the books time travelling has a bad effect - the more you time travel, it has a physical effect on you - you get physically older before you actually are, by wrinkles etc. Travelling to the bubble of light makes one youthful looking again. If the game worked on the same principle, if Max got her powers taken away (or gave them up for the good of the universe or something LOL) she could easily be the old lady, just not actually old, but aged from all the time travelling! It's totally plausible that (and bear with me here bc this is p far fetched) but she could go too far back in time (by a photo or whatever) and either have to stay in the wrong time or go back to her 'own' time and be old (the old lady) and have to hide the truth from everyone because otherwise they would know the truth! 😐

Yeah, the first one was where she learns hypnotism, in the second one she stops time, and in the third she learns time travel. The fourth one is the best though, you'll have to read it to find out what she can do though ;)
In the comics they talked about diffrent strings of time or timeliness, it's possible she's talking to an older vershion of herself that got trapped there.

I'm not certain, but did Max ever introduce herself to the Homeless Woman? In Episode 3, she (Homeless) called her (Max) Max, right? I just don't recall ever Max telling the Homeless Woman her name. Since you mention it, when I saw that woman for the first time she said "you remind me (so much) of my youth", and yes I also think her smile and the way she show her teeth is somehow familiar.. Could she be...? And she also said that Joyce feed her more than anybody else. Remember how Joyce likes to cook for Max.
At 0:46 before i finish the rest! I think that the old lady is symbolically foreshadowing (proof: the cereal, the lip parting, looking similar). I think the old lady is symbolically foreshadowing that her powers (while she has them) go wrong and she sees everything that happened in a blur, aging her hence 1000 years which is age and wisdom. She is living behind the dumpster because (my opinion) she lost her powers, Chloe died or something happened suddenly that was inchangeable, people pushed her away and she couldnt support herself. I thought most likely that Chloe died because living behind the diner gave old Max (possibly) memories of Chloe.
During the dream sequence, Max meets one of the Max's that she "left behind" in the alternate timelines when she rewinds time. This woman could be a version of Max from another timeline who keeps trying to go back and fix things unsuccessfully.

Now that ep 4 is out we know that the woman is max because the woman has like mark on her neck and I think max will have one too because mr.Jefferson drugged max around the same part of the neck
Maybe Arcadia Bay is a loop in time for Max to live in over and over again. She keeps bringing up being stuck in time. Maybe Arcadia Bay is a place in time where different versions of Max live in, reliving a special moment in time. Max, Rachel, and Kate could all be Max but just different versions of her self, like each one is from a different dimension of sorts. So they all converge at this stop in time.

Since Max is Chloe's best friend since early childhood, Max must have spent a lot of time at their home, and Joyce could consider her as a second daughter, and have a motherly "link" of some sort with her (which is only a one-way thing, since Max doesn't seem to have such a strong connection with her) and would have had a natural pity for the homeless woman. But she probably gives her food just because she's used to see the homeless woman stay behind the Two Whales, and she doesn't want to waste that food. Still, an interesting point.
Geek Remix, after replaying Episodes 1 - 3 again, I thought about your video here. Now, here me out... This might sound even CRAZIER than your theory here. (You guys were going somewhere with this 1000 years theory so I made up my own theory about this) That Homeless woman.... is FUTURE Joyce. Like I said, crazier. What if.....just what if Joyce also has the same Time travel powers as Max does? Joyce obtains it after her Husbands death and one day, she gained the power to go back the day before Williams death and she tried changing... but (Like what happened at the end of Episode 3), the more she tried to "fix", the more damage she did. Over and over, she tried to fix but something big (horrible) happens to William / Chloe / Max and Rachel Amber. She has seen ALL possible realities (All terrible, not a single good one). This would explain the Old woman wrinkled face, Tired, exhausted. Hell, even the Story (about her Homelessness) falls in line with Joyce actual story (Marrying David, losing her house, etc). Don't believe me? Watch Joyce facial expressions / face / AND both of there Accents. Sounds familiar? Joyce also shows her teeth whenever she speaks or not. (Just like Max). You said Max is the only character to have her teeth sticking out. Well.. Joyce does as well. I Triple-checked the character model and they FIT. Welp, thats just my theory... the homeless woman (after going through ALL realities, finally settles in and gave up. = Future Joyce. Still don't believe me? The homeless woman is camping OUTSIDE the Two Whales Diner (Where she worked) David also set up Surveillance cameras inside the house as well. He probably noticed Joyce disappearing / reappearing using her Powers inside the house.....

Plus Joyce has blue eyes (as does the homeless woman behind the cataracts) and Joyce has dyed blonde hair (her dark eyebrows give her true hair color away, as the homeless woman has dark hair and dark eyebrows). wow....I totally dig this theory. such a shame episode 5 was so beyond dissatisfactory and left loose ends like hell. only REAL thing they cleared up was that it was Jefferson, granted that's the biggest one but also quit disappointing when you think of all the other ends left untied. it's such a shame, this game had crazy potential.
That's entirely plausible but I'd like to believe that she's a Prescott family cast out. That would give her a lot of knowledge of the family and a reason why she's on the street. Or mostly because I'd like to believe not all of them are complete assholes.
emilyearmuffz In addition, it always bugged me that Max never asked her name. That's a fairly common thing to do if you're speaking to someone. Although homeless people are dehumanized and ignored I would have figured Max would've asked. So there's probably something significant there.
emilyearmuffz The Prescotts would have removed her from Arcadia Bay. She would know stuff and could talk about it. She hasn´t much to loose, so not much that could be used against her. Therefore: Too much risk. Give her a few hundred bucks a month and send her far away - that would be the Prescott way. I mean: How was Nathens school report and the related problems "fixed"? Throwing money at the school. The point with the name is brilliant observation. Asking for a name is a common way to start a dialog. On the other side: Max didn´t remember the last name of a fellow student. Maybe she has a hard time remembering names and thus does not ask for names.
I'm sure they would have. I don't think it's a plausible theory but the RPG player in me likes to fix parts of stories I don't understand. I want everyone to have a cool backstory lol. That's not 100% true. I bought the game recently after watching Geek Remix's PTs, I remembered Juliet's last name (was it Juliet) and it was an original option when first speaking to her. Plus if you "look" at most students she'll tell the player their name and a little about them. That's why I think the homeless woman is significant. Asking of names is such a common thing to do but they cleverly brushed over it.

i know im a bit late to this but the homeless lady cant be max because if you’ve played life is strange before the storm the part when chloe takes rachel to the hospital you can see a lady sitting down at a desk and its the homeless lady so my guess is that the homeless lady lost her job and went homeless
I don't think the old lady is Max, at least not her body. She never duplicated herself when she traveled back in time, neither when she rewinds, nor when she traveled through the picture. When she traveled back through the picture, she transferred her consciousness to her younger body. If she learns to transfer her consciousness to another's person's body, she could be in the old lady's body. This means she could be Rachel Amber. Maybe, she decides to take over Rachel's body to watch over Chloe the five years Max is in Seattle. Let William go (grafittis) and try to be there for Chloe.
Schwabokalypse Kinda coincides with the Mari's body snatcher theory. Max can even transfer with Kate and save her from whatever happened to her. Max can fill in much of Kate's story (since Kate can't completely remember everything). In Victoria's room, there's a photograph of Kate during the last Vortex Club party that Max can use to start the mind-time transfer thingy.

In every ep, Max's power seems to get a upgrade or something. ep1, she discovers it and is able to change locations while rewinding time, ep 2. stops time. ep 3. Travels through a photo. I am not sure if guys have done a video of that yet anyways, I wonder what kind of upgrade she will get in ep 4 and 5.
I'm just curious... did you guys notice the class banner at the very beginning during the storm at the lighthouse? It's dated for 1910. I think I remember a character in the game mentioning a large storm that hit Arcadia almost 100 years before, but I don't remember who said it. Possibly the old lady? What do you think about the idea that the storm Max keeps seeing isn't from the future, but the past?
w07v3r3dux I went back and the school actually was founded in 1910 (it's date is over the main entrance). When you talk to the teacher with the petition for the first time, you can prompt her to say that the town is old and holds a mysterious power. :D
I don't know if this was said before, but the HM said she lived here for "1000 years". Now i quote Max at the Finale when "I feel like i took that 1000 years ago". And I can't remember everything she said in the (nightmare) dinner... "Max I lived long enough, longer than I should have..." I'm pretty sure DONTNOD implented the HM for this theory and all the little hints.
Yes! This is what I was talking about in the comments of one of your videos. I totally think that old woman can be future Max. But I don't know if she's trapped in time. I thought maybe she placed herself there to just be there for her younger self. It would also make sense on why Max was so comfortable with her talking about certain things.
Maybe she is Max and came to past to see if she will do the right things, or just wants to live it again. Just one thing is weird... Why is she old? When Max comes back in time, she goes to her own past self.

I can really dig this theory, one of the major problems with time travel is that the traveler is still aging independently from the cycle. So a Max that has rewound thousands of times (or perhaps rewound a few longer times) would be significantly older than a Max who never had powers at all. So if Max rewinds a day, she will have lived through two days, and if she rewinds five years she lives through ten years. Max getting stuck as an old woman in a time when she is supposed to be a teenage girl could have resulted in her attempting to go back and fix a major problem (such as Chloe's accident), getting stuck there and having to relive years and years, or it could be a consequence of thousands of rewinds.
I think the dream Max wakes up from at the very beginning isn't just a dream. At the very least, what she's waking up from isn't necessarily a dream, but the future. Something bad happens, like say... a massive tornado engulfing Arcadia Bay. Max sees she's made a mistake, so rewinds as much as she possibly can, which takes a lot out of her and damages her memory. The classroom she wakes up in is where she rewinded to.
You know a game is good when more than 3 years have passed and you find more things you haven't found before. I completed the game several tines and this is the first time I see this woman.
The homeless woman is not Max due to one fact about Max's time travel, she always takes the place of herself in the past. No duplicates of Max are ever made in her travels and unless something is revealed to allow this to happen I don't think they are the same person.
It should be also noted when Max said about Kate: "But I need to find out who else is involved in this." Homeless Woman (which name we don't know): "I'm probably a bigger snoop than you. People pretend to not see me, so I see everybody. And everything." - Max is always not seen by everybody because of her power rewinding + the thing with Alyssa might be a hint that the homeless woman mean. Alyssa always is wondering how Max do that with "rescue" her for the bad things that happen to her. It seems like that helping Alyssa might pay off at the end.
I buy your theory, Mari! Great supporting evidences! The woman echoes a lot of Max's sentiments and even easily profiles Max during their introduction. She seems to be revealing secrets about Acadia Bay that Max is looking for too. I found it incredibly odd when she said she had lived a thousand years in Acadia Bay. But it makes sense to me now, because Max has ever saved herself from her own death (at the start of Episode 1). Therefore it's possible she cheated death for 1000 years. And she's back in 2013 to change the fate of her loved ones. But I would be curious to know how she got there behind Two Whales Diner, and why she is fixated in one location. It seems like she cannot escape the boundaries, just like when Max enters the polaroid and can't go out of Chloe's house. Did the homeless woman/Max enter a photograph taken at the back alley of a diner too? Perhaps Max has another time traveling power to enter pictures without possessing her own body, but being physically there. Who knows! "I'll believe anything this week." - Max Caufield
If you think about it, then when max stopped william from dying, she was 18 in her 13 year old body, so that SHOULD mean that when she has an 18 year old body, she is actually 23 years old; my theory is that this happened again at some point so max felt 1000 years old but had a 50-60 year old body
That is weird. Really weird. Does that mean that Max grew old and then for some reason went back in time? Because that explains the contacts (she had them on before she went back in time and still has them) but if that's true, why would she do it? Maybe to give her young self advice or some important information? But how is there two Max-es in one timeline? If she grew old and then went back in time to her 18- year old self, the only way we discovered in which she could do that is using the photographs. Otherwise she was to weak. But when she travelled through the photographs she was in her own body. How is she out of her young body, in her older body now? I don't understand.
Actually, while watching the Let's Play, that was my first thought. Also because we know her as "Homeless Woman" but when Max leaves her the woman says goodbye to her by name. Additionally, as with a lot of time travel wackiness, Max is rewinding everyone else's timeline, but she has a single steady continuity (i.e., how she's able to hold onto objects in her person or remain in the same location in addition to remembering what's happened before). So, while it doesn't matter over a few days in appearance/health/whatever - she's now older than she would have been if she had just lived the last few days. If Max can't quit meddling, and constantly gets lost in the attempt to "Make things perfect/just right" that could potentially take her years.
I was replaying the episode and when Max is talking to Joyce after spending the night at Chloe's, she says "5 years ago feels like a thousand." Could be a turn of phrase, but in a game like this, that similarity (and the fact that the woman has the same cereal) seems significant.
I love how indepth you get into this game. It is a great game but I love how much you girls look into it. If anything I'm gonna be upset when it's over because it's a great story.
I think there's a strong possibility that the old homeless woman could be Max who went through so many different timelines that she actually aged as she did so. Or maybe she time traveled to the future and wounded up in an older body and then went back in time as an old woman. Or maybe the old woman isn't Max at all. Maybe she's another time traveler who fucked up what she had to do and wound up giving up. Also, why DOES the old woman have cataracts? Is there a symbolic meaning behind it, or will it play into the story later? Gah, can't episode 4 come any faster?!
I also had this thought..I think its definitely possible because of how the "stuck in time" through the game is emphasized and how Max feels that she can trust the lady for no particular reason. I can't remember exactly but I'm sure she made a comment about no one seeing her and she seeing everybody, acting like the observer, which you said Max also was. I also don't think we have seen a character who resembles Max as much as the homeless woman..

When I played episode 2, I initially thought she could have been Rachel who disappeared - at the time, one of my theories was that Rachel rewind time so many times that she began to notice herself to age as she isn't affected by or immune to time travel - since episode 1, there is the notion that Rachel likely has the same powers as Max. To support this, Max's items never disappears when she goes back in time. The only exception is the Kate photo, but I am sure the developers overlooked this contradiction on purpose so that the gamer can go with one or the other option. The Kate photo disappearing had made believe me that the inventory not vanishing was just a game mechanic that really didn't exist in the game's storyline - it was there to make the game more re convenient for the gamer. However, because it was confirmed that Max can "teleport" by rewinding time in the actual plot, I realized that the inventory not disappearing exist in the game's storyline as well (more on this later). Like the inventory not disappearing after time is rewind, I thought not being in the same spot didn't exist in the actual plot and that it was there to make things convenient. However, episode III made it crystal clear that Max can "teleport" with the breaking into the office cut-scene and the puzzle of evading David in the swimming pool area. Later in the episode, there is a cut-scene with Max taking Frank's keys and him being dumbfounded that it appears "magically" in her hands. This establishes the ability of keeping items inventory is story canon. Similar to the Kate photo issue, however, we see that Max was back at her seat when Chloe was shot in the bathroom - this made me believe that the teleporting ability didn't really exist in the game. Unlike the Kate photo dilemma, this "oversight" can be explained in-game as Max's rewind power being awaken for the first time, resulting in acting a bit uncontrollably. These two abilities show that rewinding time does not affect Max and anything she has in possession - this makes me wonder if Max holds Chloe and went to the past, would Chloe be not affected? However, that is for another comment. After watching your video and pointing out the similarities of the mysterious lady and Max being mouth breathers and the cereal, it makes more sense that Max is the old soman. She rewind time the regular time (by not jumping into photos) so many times to fix time, she had gotten old. Perhaps when she realized she was getting old, her powers allowed her to rewind time longer to the point of scrapping out on her, making her stuck at a time period before her birth. Being stuck at a time before she was born would allow two of her to exist in a timeline. I noticed that this post is long, so one more supporting evidence of Max being the old lady - if Max doesn't tell the old lady her rewind powers, the latter would reply that once she does, it would be a regret or something. That line instantly made me think that the old lady knows what Max wanted to talk to her about as if she knew that it occurred in the past.

It'd interesting if the homeless woman was in season 2 as a main or even as an easter egg. Like what if she was in every season like that? Like a small mini story that you have to put the pieces together to know. And it'd be cool if she was in before the storm. Like chloe walks past her and the last gives her a small smile.
I think highlighting the cereal is definitely intentional as one of Max's only catch phrase is "are you for cereal?". This also appears in the nightmare sequence in the Two Whales when mean hazel haired alternate Max says "are you for cereal?" to real Max

and when Max saw the shot she took of the butterfly right from the start of the game and saw it at the end of the game, she says "it feels like I took that shot 1000 years ago" (something along the lines of that).

In BTS you see Chloe having dream sequences and visions.... yes just like Max who has visions in class and later in episode 5. Chloe never ever thought she had powers, she never knew it herself so it can be assumed that Max had her powers long ago as well and she didn't know until her best friend dies in the bathroom

If she was max, then why she didn't notice Chloe as a friend to her? Also she had a story, she told max that she had a home but the Prescott took that from her.. I don't remember the details, but she had a story that I don't think relates to max.. Since she lived in Seattle and not Arcadia.. Idk.. She is important but I don't think she is max.. Plus that cereal, she mentioned that Joyce gives her food often, so maybe Joyce did give her that,

Has you sayed, the old woman lived in Seatle. When Max goes back in time and reverses Chloe's father's death the present changes and when she arrives at Chloe's house, he told her that he never thought he would see her again after she went to Seatle. Maybe Max is going to solve everything and leave Arcadia Bay, moving to Seatle... But then, when she misses her home town she is going back to Arcadia Bay.

I agree that something is up with her, but I'm not entirely sure what. The Max connection seems like the most likely one. Maybe the homeless lady disappears when the timeline gets sorted out? Also: I think its a note to mention that she also is the only other person besides Chloe she tells about the hurricane, and she totally doesn't look surprised.
The problem with that hypothesis is that if you don't warn her, then you find her dead during the storm.
And Max in episode 4 says "funny, I think I look older" when she looks at the mirror in Chloe's house in the alternate timeline.

I mean... even if Max's body doesn't become younger when she rewinds - and I don't think it's the case - the age difference would be... irrevelant, I'd say. And the whole "more she goes through time, older she gets" thing doesn't sound right in my mind. If she was getting older than she should have, her mobile phone would get crazy too, showing different time. Game doesn't mention that.
Also, it seems that items cannot be moved back in time further than to the point they've been created. Do you remember the scene between Kate and David, where you could choose to help Kate and scare David off or to take a photo? Have you ever tried to take a photo, then rewind and help Kate? 'cause, you see, if you do so - you don't have the photo. If I recall correctly, the same thing goes for blue butterfly photo - Max has to take it once again, as she rewound time to the point when said photo did not exist yet.
Agreed, it seems that this rule doesn't apply to every non plot-oriented photo as these still appear in the journal, but then I guess that it's more of a gameplay thing-y.
She travels several years back in time using the photo - her body is several years younger. Personally I believe that the thing that goes back in time is her mind/soul, not her body - she focuses on a time and space, she rewinds and then the universe suddenly tries to figure out what has been done to it, creating alternative reality "what if Max was standing not there, but here, with that item in her pocket". The same spot in time, different reality, where Max is not older than she should be at said time, just... standing in a different place. Max's body doesn't travel with her; reality tries to make sense out of mess Max did and thus adjusts her body's position in space. I suppose that her head hurts when she rewinds because her brain has to create and uphold a "bridge" between two points in time, while her mind exists simultaneously in multiple times...

Think about it... she has seen Chloe's death(s), she has seen "Alternative Chloe" and Kate's suicide attempt, she has her "vision", Prescott threatens her, world seems to be ending and it looks like Arcadia Bay's fate is dependant on her - that's A LOT of pressure and to worry about. Would you sleep well in her place? I believe that she says she looks older because she's simply exhausted, both mentally and physically.

I also don't believe Max ages throught time-traveling, but if the homeless lady REALLY is an older Max that claims to be a thousand years old, that's the only reasonable explanation I can think of, and when she rewinds by using pictures, it's a different method of time-traveling, so I don't really consider it. In general, I don't believe this that I said is true, but if there is really and older Max there, I think this is one of the possible explanations.

Ironically, I missed the homeless woman in this game, and I doubt they pointed out the cereal by coincidence nor left the cereal near the homeless woman by coincidence.
This is a great find. Makes me want to play through the game again to find the things I missed, and analyze little details like this more closely.

Geek Remix I found something very interesting, in episode 1, there is a marking on Chloe's wall that says"Hole to Another Universe" and in episode 3, in the beginning next to Taylor in the bathroom, its the same message, and the message wasnt there in episode 2 so I think theres something up with those messages. Maybe the Hole to another universe message is foreshadowing max's ability to travel through photos and acidentally create another universe.

Did anyone read the Molly Moon series of books? (I loved them when I was young hah). Basically they're about a girl who learns (among other stuff) how to travel in time. But in the books time travelling has a bad effect - the more you time travel, it has a physical effect on you - you get physically older before you actually are, by wrinkles etc. Travelling to the bubble of light makes one youthful looking again. If the game worked on the same principle, if Max got her powers taken away (or gave them up for the good of the universe or something LOL) she could easily be the old lady, just not actually old, but aged from all the time travelling! It's totally plausible that (and bear with me here bc this is p far fetched) but she could go too far back in time (by a photo or whatever) and either have to stay in the wrong time or go back to her 'own' time and be old (the old lady) and have to hide the truth from everyone because otherwise they would know the truth! 😐

Yeah, the first one was where she learns hypnotism, in the second one she stops time, and in the third she learns time travel. The fourth one is the best though, you'll have to read it to find out what she can do though ;)
In the comics they talked about diffrent strings of time or timeliness, it's possible she's talking to an older vershion of herself that got trapped there.

Since you mention it, when I saw that woman for the first time she said "you remind me (so much) of my youth", and yes I also think her smile and the way she show her teeth is somehow familiar.. Could she be...? And she also said that Joyce feed her more than anybody else. Remember how Joyce likes to cook for Max.

I think that the old lady is symbolically foreshadowing (proof: the cereal, the lip parting, looking similar). I think the old lady is symbolically foreshadowing that her powers (while she has them) go wrong and she sees everything that happened in a blur, aging her hence 1000 years which is age and wisdom. She is living behind the dumpster because (my opinion) she lost her powers, Chloe died or something happened suddenly that was inchangeable, people pushed her away and she couldnt support herself. I thought most likely that Chloe died because living behind the diner gave old Max (possibly) memories of Chloe.
During the dream sequence, Max meets one of the Max's that she "left behind" in the alternate timelines when she rewinds time. This woman could be a version of Max from another timeline who keeps trying to go back and fix things unsuccessfully.

Now that ep 4 is out we know that the woman is max because the woman has like mark on her neck and I think max will have one too because mr.Jefferson drugged max around the same part of the neck
Maybe Arcadia Bay is a loop in time for Max to live in over and over again. She keeps bringing up being stuck in time. Maybe Arcadia Bay is a place in time where different versions of Max live in, reliving a special moment in time. Max, Rachel, and Kate could all be Max but just different versions of her self, like each one is from a different dimension of sorts. So they all converge at this stop in time.
Probably could explain why Joyce is always giving her food maybe?

Geek Remix, after replaying Episodes 1 - 3 again, I thought about your video here. Now, here me out... This might sound even CRAZIER than your theory here. (You guys were going somewhere with this 1000 years theory so I made up my own theory about this)
That Homeless woman.... is FUTURE Joyce. Like I said, crazier. What if.....just what if Joyce also has the same Time travel powers as Max does? Joyce obtains it after her Husbands death and one day, she gained the power to go back the day before Williams death and she tried changing... but (Like what happened at the end of Episode 3), the more she tried to "fix", the more damage she did. Over and over, she tried to fix but something big (horrible) happens to William / Chloe / Max and Rachel Amber. She has seen ALL possible realities (All terrible, not a single good one).
This would explain the Old woman wrinkled face, Tired, exhausted. Hell, even the Story (about her Homelessness) falls in line with Joyce actual story (Marrying David, losing her house, etc). Don't believe me? Watch Joyce facial expressions / face / AND both of there Accents. Sounds familiar? Joyce also shows her teeth whenever she speaks or not. (Just like Max). You said Max is the only character to have her teeth sticking out. Well.. Joyce does as well. I Triple-checked the character model and they FIT. Welp, thats just my theory... the homeless woman (after going through ALL realities, finally settles in and gave up. = Future Joyce.

wow....I totally dig this theory. such a shame episode 5 was so beyond dissatisfactory and left loose ends like hell. only REAL thing they cleared up was that it was Jefferson, granted that's the biggest one but also quit disappointing when you think of all the other ends left untied. it's such a shame, this game had crazy potential.
That's entirely plausible but I'd like to believe that she's a Prescott family cast out. That would give her a lot of knowledge of the family and a reason why she's on the street. Or mostly because I'd like to believe not all of them are complete assholes.
emilyearmuffz In addition, it always bugged me that Max never asked her name. That's a fairly common thing to do if you're speaking to someone. Although homeless people are dehumanized and ignored I would have figured Max would've asked. So there's probably something significant there.
emilyearmuffz The Prescotts would have removed her from Arcadia Bay. She would know stuff and could talk about it. She hasn´t much to loose, so not much that could be used against her. Therefore: Too much risk. Give her a few hundred bucks a month and send her far away - that would be the Prescott way. I mean: How was Nathens school report and the related problems "fixed"? Throwing money at the school.
The point with the name is brilliant observation. Asking for a name is a common way to start a dialog. On the other side: Max didn´t remember the last name of a fellow student. Maybe she has a hard time remembering names and thus does not ask for names.

That's not 100% true. I bought the game recently after watching Geek Remix's PTs, I remembered Juliet's last name (was it Juliet) and it was an original option when first speaking to her. Plus if you "look" at most students she'll tell the player their name and a little about them. That's why I think the homeless woman is significant. Asking of names is such a common thing to do but they cleverly brushed over it.

I don't think the old lady is Max, at least not her body. She never duplicated herself when she traveled back in time, neither when she rewinds, nor when she traveled through the picture.
When she traveled back through the picture, she transferred her consciousness to her younger body. If she learns to transfer her consciousness to another's person's body, she could be in the old lady's body. This means she could be Rachel Amber. Maybe, she decides to take over Rachel's body to watch over Chloe the five years Max is in Seattle.
Let William go (grafittis) and try to be there for Chloe.
Schwabokalypse Kinda coincides with the Mari's body snatcher theory. Max can even transfer with Kate and save her from whatever happened to her. Max can fill in much of Kate's story (since Kate can't completely remember everything). In every ep, Max's power seems to get a upgrade or something. ep1, she discovers it and is able to change locations while rewinding time, ep 2. stops time. ep 3. Travels through a photo. I am not sure if guys have done a video of that yet anyways, I wonder what kind of upgrade she will get in ep 4 and 5.

I'm just curious... did you guys notice the class banner at the very beginning during the storm at the lighthouse? It's dated for 1910. I think I remember a character in the game mentioning a large storm that hit Arcadia almost 100 years before, but I don't remember who said it. Possibly the old lady? What do you think about the idea that the storm Max keeps seeing isn't from the future, but the past?
w07v3r3dux I went back and the school actually was founded in 1910 (it's date is over the main entrance). When you talk to the teacher with the petition for the first time, you can prompt her to say that the town is old and holds a mysterious power. :D

Yes! This is what I was talking about in the comments of one of your videos. I totally think that old woman can be future Max. But I don't know if she's trapped in time. I thought maybe she placed herself there to just be there for her younger self. It would also make sense on why Max was so comfortable with her talking about certain things.

Maybe she is Max and came to past to see if she will do the right things, or just wants to live it again. Just one thing is weird... Why is she old? When Max comes back in time, she goes to her own past self.

I can really dig this theory, one of the major problems with time travel is that the traveler is still aging independently from the cycle. So a Max that has rewound thousands of times (or perhaps rewound a few longer times) would be significantly older than a Max who never had powers at all. So if Max rewinds a day, she will have lived through two days, and if she rewinds five years she lives through ten years.
Max getting stuck as an old woman in a time when she is supposed to be a teenage girl could have resulted in her attempting to go back and fix a major problem (such as Chloe's accident), getting stuck there and having to relive years and years, or it could be a consequence of thousands of rewinds.
i mean it would make sence. SHE'S BEEN ALIVE FOR 1000 YEARS AND OBVIOUSLY HAVE TIME TRAVEL POWERS
I think the dream Max wakes up from at the very beginning isn't just a dream. At the very least, what she's waking up from isn't necessarily a dream, but the future. Something bad happens, like say... a massive tornado engulfing Arcadia Bay. Max sees she's made a mistake, so rewinds as much as she possibly can, which takes a lot out of her and damages her memory. The classroom she wakes up in is where she rewinded to.
You know a game is good when more than 3 years have passed and you find more things you haven't found before.
I completed the game several tines and this is the first time I see this woman.

The homeless woman is not Max due to one fact about Max's time travel, she always takes the place of herself in the past. No duplicates of Max are ever made in her travels and unless something is revealed to allow this to happen I don't think they are the same person.
At the end of the game she says "It feels like I took this 1000 years ago." referring to the blue butterfly pic fron the start of the game

It should be also noted when Max said about Kate: "But I need to find out who else is involved in this." Homeless Woman (which name we don't know): "I'm probably a bigger snoop than you. People pretend to not see me, so I see everybody. And everything." - Max is always not seen by everybody because of her power rewinding + the thing with Alyssa might be a hint that the homeless woman mean. Alyssa always is wondering how Max do that with "rescue" her for the bad things that happen to her. It seems like that helping Alyssa might pay off at the end.
I buy your theory, Mari! Great supporting evidences! The woman echoes a lot of Max's sentiments and even easily profiles Max during their introduction. She seems to be revealing secrets about Acadia Bay that Max is looking for too.
I found it incredibly odd when she said she had lived a thousand years in Acadia Bay. But it makes sense to me now, because Max has ever saved herself from her own death (at the start of Episode 1). Therefore it's possible she cheated death for 1000 years. And she's back in 2013 to change the fate of her loved ones.
But I would be curious to know how she got there behind Two Whales Diner, and why she is fixated in one location. It seems like she cannot escape the boundaries, just like when Max enters the polaroid and can't go out of Chloe's house. Did the homeless woman/Max enter a photograph taken at the back alley of a diner too? Perhaps Max has another time traveling power to enter pictures without possessing her own body, but being physically there. Who knows!

If you think about it, then when max stopped william from dying, she was 18 in her 13 year old body, so that SHOULD mean that when she has an 18 year old body, she is actually 23 years old; my theory is that this happened again at some point so max felt 1000 years old but had a 50-60 year old body
That is weird. Really weird. Does that mean that Max grew old and then for some reason went back in time? Because that explains the contacts (she had them on before she went back in time and still has them) but if that's true, why would she do it? Maybe to give her young self advice or some important information?
But how is there two Max-es in one timeline? If she grew old and then went back in time to her 18- year old self, the only way we discovered in which she could do that is using the photographs. Otherwise she was to weak. But when she travelled through the photographs she was in her own body. How is she out of her young body, in her older body now?

Actually, while watching the Let's Play, that was my first thought. Also because we know her as "Homeless Woman" but when Max leaves her the woman says goodbye to her by name. Additionally, as with a lot of time travel wackiness, Max is rewinding everyone else's timeline, but she has a single steady continuity (i.e., how she's able to hold onto objects in her person or remain in the same location in addition to remembering what's happened before). So, while it doesn't matter over a few days in appearance/health/whatever - she's now older than she would have been if she had just lived the last few days. If Max can't quit meddling, and constantly gets lost in the attempt to "Make things perfect/just right" that could potentially take her years.
I was replaying the episode and when Max is talking to Joyce after spending the night at Chloe's, she says "5 years ago feels like a thousand." Could be a turn of phrase, but in a game like this, that similarity (and the fact that the woman has the same cereal) seems significant.
If max can reverse time maby she can spred out her time line. That way she can live much longer. Like she got stuck in time
I love how indepth you get into this game. It is a great game but I love how much you girls look into it. If anything I'm gonna be upset when it's over because it's a great story.

I think there's a strong possibility that the old homeless woman could be Max who went through so many different timelines that she actually aged as she did so. Or maybe she time traveled to the future and wounded up in an older body and then went back in time as an old woman. Or maybe the old woman isn't Max at all. Maybe she's another time traveler who fucked up what she had to do and wound up giving up.
Also, why DOES the old woman have cataracts? Is there a symbolic meaning behind it, or will it play into the story later? Gah, can't episode 4 come any faster?!

I also had this thought..I think its definitely possible because of how the "stuck in time" through the game is emphasized and how Max feels that she can trust the lady for no particular reason. I can't remember exactly but I'm sure she made a comment about no one seeing her and she seeing everybody, acting like the observer, which you said Max also was. I also don't think we have seen a character who resembles Max as much as the homeless woman..

When I played episode 2, I initially thought she could have been Rachel who disappeared - at the time, one of my theories was that Rachel rewind time so many times that she began to notice herself to age as she isn't affected by or immune to time travel - since episode 1, there is the notion that Rachel likely has the same powers as Max.
To support this, Max's items never disappears when she goes back in time. The only exception is the Kate photo, but I am sure the developers overlooked this contradiction on purpose so that the gamer can go with one or the other option. The Kate photo disappearing had made believe me that the inventory not vanishing was just a game mechanic that really didn't exist in the game's storyline - it was there to make the game more re convenient for the gamer. However, because it was confirmed that Max can "teleport" by rewinding time in the actual plot, I realized that the inventory not disappearing exist in the game's storyline as well (more on this later).
Like the inventory not disappearing after time is rewind, I thought not being in the same spot didn't exist in the actual plot and that it was there to make things convenient. However, episode III made it crystal clear that Max can "teleport" with the breaking into the office cut-scene and the puzzle of evading David in the swimming pool area. Later in the episode, there is a cut-scene with Max taking Frank's keys and him being dumbfounded that it appears "magically" in her hands. This establishes the ability of keeping items inventory is story canon. Similar to the Kate photo issue, however, we see that Max was back at her seat when Chloe was shot in the bathroom - this made me believe that the teleporting ability didn't really exist in the game. Unlike the Kate photo dilemma, this "oversight" can be explained in-game as Max's rewind power being awaken for the first time, resulting in acting a bit uncontrollably.
These two abilities show that rewinding time does not affect Max and anything she has in possession - this makes me wonder if Max holds Chloe and went to the past, would Chloe be not affected? However, that is for another comment.
After watching your video and pointing out the similarities of the mysterious lady and Max being mouth breathers and the cereal, it makes more sense that Max is the old soman. She rewind time the regular time (by not jumping into photos) so many times to fix time, she had gotten old. Perhaps when she realized she was getting old, her powers allowed her to rewind time longer to the point of scrapping out on her, making her stuck at a time period before her birth. Being stuck at a time before she was born would allow two of her to exist in a timeline. I noticed that this post is long, so one more supporting evidence of Max being the old lady - if Max doesn't tell the old lady her rewind powers, the latter would reply that once she does, it would be a regret or something. That line instantly made me think that the old lady knows what Max wanted to talk to her about as if she knew that it occurred in the past.

It'd interesting if the homeless woman was in season 2 as a main or even as an easter egg. Like what if she was in every season like that? Like a small mini story that you have to put the pieces together to know. And it'd be cool if she was in before the storm. Like chloe walks past her and the last gives her a small smile.

I think highlighting the cereal is definitely intentional as one of Max's only catch phrase is "are you for cereal?". This also appears in the nightmare sequence in the Two Whales when mean hazel haired alternate Max says "are you for cereal?" to real Max
I think it's there just to mess with your brain. You know sometimes you got to have some dead ends to keep you on your toes.
