  • Check out this papaya tree breaking all the rules and thriving in Santa Clara, CA without any cold winter damage even though the video was taken at the very end of winter in the second week of March. Buy your own papaya tree at Golden Gate Palms Nursery in Richmond, CA 925-325-PALM.

I'm in Hayward, CA zone 10a and just planted (2) Mango trees in my front yard. 6ft tall Valencia Pride Mango in my front yard which survived winter with zero protection. Last season I did have 2 VP mangos that almost grew to maturity but dropped before ripening. I also planted my 3-4ft tall Pickering Mango. Pickering did produce 1 super sweet mango for me last season. I also have 4ft tall Glenn Mango that is starting to flower. Lastly, I have a 4-5ft tall Bailey's Marvel that I purchased this yr that hasn't flowered yet and hoping for something.

Good going for the owner of the papaya tree because they're a tropical plant & the equivalent to Santa Claras latitude is Melbourne in Victoria which is in Australia which is about 37°S of the equator, people have tried growing them there & the Winter ❄️ just about kills them there.
My latitude is about 32.66° S of the equator & they do die back a bit in the winter time where I am so my latitude is similar to San Diegos which is in Southern California.
I have 3 × 1 metre high papaya plants which have bounced back after the winter time !

do you know if papaya would handle 110 in summer, or 30 in winter? I live about 2 hours east of you in foothills.

It's funny as a delivery driver I have seen plenty of papaya trees in the bay and knew it was odd but being that I didn't eat many I never thought about it much I just knew it was odd. Until I tried papaya juice for the first time ever and now it has captured my imagination! Papaya is probably the best juice in the world! Tastes like an all natural Orange Bang!

I was just looking back at the posts on this video and saw yours. I may be opening up a nursery out your and if so I’d need to find a local manager so if you know anyone good please let me know. I was going to fly out there on the 16th and drive around in the Austin and San Antonio areas to see what kind of plants are growing. The climate there looks like it would be good for just about everything we grow with the caveat that every 20 years or so you might get hit with a huge freeze in which case you may have to start over with some things.

Is it possible to guess the age? Seems the tag is fairly new, perhaps one season at best. It must of grown substantially in one year! What is the Low there for Winter? Will it survive another Season without freezing to the ground?
