Traunstein is the highest mountain on the east bank of Traunsee in the district of Gmunden, Austria. As measured by the height above sea level of its summit it is 1,691 metres (5,548 ft) high. Because of its almost vertical walls ending directly in the lake and secluded, advanced position Traunstein looks like a boulder in the landscape. Its distinctive silhouette is visible from a great distance therefore it is often called a guardian of the Salzkammergut.
the three tracks are (i went up #2 and down #3
1. Hans-Hernler-Steig (north western route). Opened in 1905, marked. Moderately difficult cable route.
2. Naturfreundesteig (southwestern route). Opened in 1929, marked. Medium hard cable route, one of the most beautiful in Salzkammergut.
3. Mairalmsteig (southern route). Marked, easier than the other two, but still some passages steep and protected (grade A by the Austrian ferratas scale). Used mainly for descent.

Positively wicked climb, practically straight up. Much respect for those who carried the pieces of the cross all the way to the top and your grandparents.

What an absolutely beautiful pilgrimage! Totally respectful and full of honour. Epic on your behalf! At any point you could have said, “Too hard!” And turned around and gone back, but you didn’t.
I was amazed at the hand wires and carved flat steps to help you and others get up there! Imagine doing the trip in that route without them. How fantastic for them putting in these climbing aides. And to follow in your grandmothers footsteps -literally, is beyond wonderful! Well done K8i.
Thank you for the kind words. I had to do a screenshot they were so lovely. Yes so great the assurance they provide. I think they “opened” the routes in like the 40s and 50s but i guess they upgrade them periodically. Must have been so epic when Nan did it

Wow, that looks proper steep. What an incredible view. You seemed to handle the heights no problem, I was feeling a bit anxious just watching. The weather looked immaculate as well. It didn't look like there was any wind. So cool!
Yes I was extremely lucky with the weather. I was only in town for a handful of days. It was so wild looking up at the mountain from town. And there were so many people up there too on a Wednesday. Pretty wild.
@@KateGrarock It reminded me of the time I hiked Roy’s Peak in NZ. We were the only ones there because of covid and there was not a breath of wind. Views of the lake below just stunning. Your video was exactly the same just steeper. 😁

There were several times there, I was like "What the..." That's a crazy hike. Kudos to all those amazing people that got the cross up there... I can't believe there's a restaurant up there... omg!

@@KateGrarock gear videos always seem to do well... I've seen a couple of hiking channels where their hikes have like 50 views but then there's a couple of gear videos they've done that are at 50,000 views. I'm planning on doing a gear video but from the opposite angle of 'how to INCREASE your pack weight' as I've definitely swung a bit back towards carrying more recently!

i love the fish out of water moments (taxis, language etc) intertwined with drop-dead gorgeous scenery.
it sums up the 4 years i lived in austria and i know that terrain quite well as my wife's family have a lake house at attersee, the next lake across.
if you're up for a short fun hike up a hill try schoberstein which is an hour up a small peak with the start of the trail at weißenbach am attersee, or if having a lazy day take the small cable car up to zwölferhorn from st.gilgen.

I really connected with this video ❤ My grandmother is from Japan and spent a lot of time in Japan learning about my heritage and about her life and background. I totally understand the journey of exploring and connecting with your family and their experiences.
A lot of mountains in japan are a lot like this mountain though, steep with lots of rock and it’s a totally different vibe conquering these types of mountains! Rad video!

Greetings from Gmunden! I'm glad you had a great time on the Traunstein. Looks like you had the right weather too. I enjoyed hearing about your grandparents' history with the mountain and watching your experience. Now I feel like going up myself soon...
I don't know if anyone told you how dangerous the mountain can be; people die up there almost every year. A few years ago a local even wrote a book about the Traunstein's history and its victims.
The sign at 2:02 is just information about the nature reserve and the rules inside it.
17:17 They do indeed resupply by helicopter once a month.

I was only in town for 4 days. Sad to hear about people dying up there. But I’m sure if the weather changes suddenly it would be very scary. Wild to think they resupply by helicopter. Yes it was pretty fun. No harness or helmet required but it certainly had my full attention
