    I wouldn’t consider the MU2 inherently unsafe. It’s just a considerably more difficult plane to fly than many others in its category. The reality is that this is a plane that in most respects is as difficult to fly as a light jet. It’s not well-suited to a weekend warrior GA pilot or a lawyer or doctor who wants to fly the kids and wife up to the cabin once in a while. It requires maintaining proficiency.

    • @aquacat4point1
      @aquacat4point1 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's actually more demanding than any light jet and more capable in all categories but speed. not inherently unsafe, just not for rookie pilots nor was it ever meant to be. It is extremely safe if you are a competent instrument and high performance, and situationally aware capable pilot. It is extremely rugged for its category, was designed for a 30,000hr life cycle, that's why there are almost 300 still flying today. With proper experience and training it is a simple airplane to fly.

    • @markriley141
      @markriley141 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@aquacat4point1 I've never flown an MU-2, but I did a little research on the reportedly unsafe platform, and an editorial about the plane basically said, "fly it like a jet, not like a normal twin". This sound about right?

    • @aquacat4point1
      @aquacat4point1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @markriley141 just fly it correctly and be a good instrument pilot if you intend to get full use out of it. It does have some jet speed tendencies but fly it like a high performance purpose built clean sheet turboprop. It's only bizarre and mysterious or "hard to fly to pilots" because it is unfamiliar and flies a bit differently in some regards, but i would and have done more in it with its short field capabilites than ib would in any other turboprop of its class. It certainly is not impossible to fly. It just takes some real seat of the pants time in type to get use to the wonderful aircraft that it is, and don't skimp on maintenance as many owners try to shop them up cheap and not put a penny into them maintenance wise. I've been safely operating a marquise for 3 years now with more than 400hrs in type in all sorts of weather all over the country. I do however have lots of other kinds of experience in many other types of aircraft.

    Is the plane safe?!?!? Absolutely it is. Talk to Pat Cannon. I remember a hit piece on the news in 1986 about MU-2 crashes. The story documented about 5 crashes. I watched it with my friend who owned 2 MU -2's at the time and he debunked every single crash as pilot error or pilots who were in over their heads, but never an airworthiness issue with the AC. Anyhow, this is an awesome, Robust aircraft built for the japanese military. Thanks for making the video.

    just a little feedback on the performance figures @0:45 :
    I would group the different units instead of writing them in one row but far apart. so essentially like: Cruise speed (knots&km/h) in the top left corner, climb performance (ft/min & m/s) in the top right corner and so on.
    Would make it easier to read imo.
    Other than that, awesome videos! Absolutely love them.

    This is a safe and easy airplane to fly, as twins go. That issue was procedure.
    For most multi engines airplane. you want to clean the airplane aerodynamically as quickly as you can when you lose an engine on takeoff .
    For the MU-2. You want to keep the flaps, clean the gear up and then lower the angle of attack or AOA. Because I think what happens the small wings will cause the induced drag to go beyond the power curve. Especially after losing one engine on takeoff. You lose a lot of airflow over the wing.
    Until I saw the video I never realized just how small the wings really were. That would explain a lot, to me anyway. And why they stress the use of the flaps so very much.
    This is a constantly accelerating aircraft at altitude when in cruise. Which is very representative of the high-performance small jets like the Lear jet.
    Because of the wings. It was designed to be flown professionally. It is a very high-performance airplane. But at the same time easy to fly. Because of the flaps. And If you know the right procedures.
    So the next biggest issue I read, is this is supposed to be a trim flown airplane. Supposed to be very trim sensitive when hand flown.
    Stay safe out there!
    Good video, but I don't think you're a pilot?

      It's actually extremely docile in stalls clean wrong and with flaps, don't go so this but you can steer them In a stalls mush condition with the spoilers all the way through full steal regime due to no ailerons. Yes if you got an extremely high angle of attack going and stayed uncoordinated you could get yourself into trouble at low altitude

      Great question! In the early 1960s when the MU-2 was designed, Boeing was doing exactly the same thing with the 727 -- relatively small wing with TRIPLE-slotted flaps, plus leading edge slats. Cruise fast, land short, but those flaps required some maintenance to keep in proper rig. Also... the MU-2 was really the first airplane built by Mitsubishi after WWII... they were building landing gear for the F-104, for Lockheed, and chose the exact same configuration for the MU-2's gear. So the design was heavily influenced by the trends of the day; and its core market was the Japanese Coast Guard -- it was to patrol outlying islands and land on their short, unimproved strips, hence the need for short/soft field use, and also the choice of a high wing -- to keep the props away from gravel or other debris.
