You are absolutely correct, there should be a college security for students who clear RMO, or atleast score above a designated cut off; it will be having the most impactful effect on the cult of JEE spreading more contagiously than a virusover the country because of the tyranny of coachings. KVPY was cancelled because most of JEE aspirants appear for KVPY, take the lavish scholarship & does not join IISc's. Same happens with Mathematical Olys too, till RMO, JEE goes nicely but beyond that it starts to deteriorate the JEE prep. Faculty of SRG batches discourage the preparation of INMO and I don't blame them. Blame is to be on the concerned authorities. PS: Just qualifying RMO creates partiality because different regions have different cut offs, someone who scored a 2 marks might qualify and someone who scored 28 (like me) didn't qualify. So, there should be a minimum benchmark score which a student should get to get a college security

The main is the financial problem. Indian gov doesn't encourage research. If a scientist cannot get the minimum financial security why would bright students choose research pathway and not go to big companies of foreign?
That's exactly why i was quite sceptical about going in pure math cause I thought I will not be able to make enough money to support myself and my family and father going to retire in a few years and I will have to manage the house if and only if government had some security for us I would have pursued it happily
You might not know this, but Iran's research output is better than that of India. It isn't about financing or money anymore. It has become a mere rhetoric to ignore the elephant in the room. Indians today are not interested in research. Everything is about money for Indians. Mathematical research is very cheap. All it needs is access to papers, conferences, literature and supercomputers. We have all these facilities but somehow we're lagging. The decline in Indians who pursue phDs and postdocs in US is very steep. It isn't about financing anymore, it is the intent.

You have raised an extremely fundamental question, which encompasses not only Mathematics but every field of endeavor which requires creativity and original thinking. Supplementing the problems that you have already mentioned, I would like to elucidate on the following. 1. Our current school education system is tuned towards stifling creativity and fostering a culture of mediocrity. Not surprising since even after 75 years it resembles in essence the system that was put in place by the British to churn out clerks, not thinkers. As a result, the present school system serves successfully the purpose of jacking up the 'literacy rate', little else. 2. Unlike the times of Ramanujan when we had thinkers who knew the real essence of education; that 'Education is the manifestation of perfection already in man', today our education system has become a corporate proxy, where all that matters is the final bottom-line. The unfortunate reality for today's student is that 'school is something to be endured, while the real learning happens elsewhere'. 3. Now, about Mathematics specifically. This is what Paul Zeitz, a member of the first American team to participate in the IMO and later a trainer of the first team from any country to score a perfect 252 in the IMO, had to say on the subject at hand - "We fledgling mathematicians understood that the single most important thing was not raw intelligence or knowledge. What mattered was passion. The way to become successful in mathematics, like almost every endeavor, is to care about it, to love it, to obsess over it. And in this, Eastern Europeans had a clear superiority, a cultural advantage. They had been trained, from an early age, to love mathematics more intensely." Well, our schools today (aided by the boards that be) have ensured successfully to smother all vestiges of creativity and passion from an early age. So much so, that for those students that still persevere with their passion, schools have become more of a hindrance. 4. Peeling away the jingoism when it comes to us vis-a-vis China, let's take a brief look at the facts. China has invested heavily for decades on their human resource development; at all levels of education, starting from primary level to post graduation. The schools in collaboration with the universities there have ensured no dearth of mathematical training, especially for pre-university students. Little surprise then that since 1998 the worst performance of China in the IMO has been 3rd position! Also, is it mere coincidence that over the past few years the majority of the contestants in the IMO teams of USA and Canada are of Chinese origin. 5. Lastly, let's look a bit closer. It is unfortunate that for an overwhelming majority of parents their kids are more akin to racehorses in the racecourse of their unfulfilled aspirations. Burdened under the weight of second hand dreams, it is no wonder that these kids lose their innate passion, creativity and originality. Spreading awareness about mathematics beyond the straightjacket of school curriculum is commendable. The only concern is that as soon as there is a critical mass of awareness the coaching institutes will swoop in to make hay while the sun shines, and turn it into another JEE-like tamasha.

Problem 2
Start with a positive integer, then choose a negative integer. We’ll use these two numbers to
generate a sequence using the following rule: create the next term in the sequence by adding
the previous two.
(a) Can you find a sequence of this type that starts with 5 elements that alternate sign?
With 10 elements that alternate sign? Can you find a sequence with any number of
elements that alternate sign?
(b) Given a particular starting integer, what negative number should you choose to make
the alternating part of the sequence as long as possible? For example, if your sequence
started with 8, what negative number would give the longest alternating part? What if
you started with 10? With n?
I think I didn't understood the question well but I find a sequence if your start no. n and the next -ve no. Is (n-1) then your next no. Will always be in the form the coefficient of n will be no. Subtracted from the next digit.
